Following the wave of online controversy surrounding his interaction with a female fan during a concert in Nashville, Usher has publicly addressed the situation during his next performance. The singer made it clear that he does not want anyone to come on stage unless they genuinely feel comfortable doing so, while also delivering a direct message to future concertgoers who may be invited to join him during the show.

During his concert in Birmingham, Alabama—one of the stops on his co-headlining tour with Chris Brown—Usher unexpectedly paused the performance to speak to the audience. Before launching into the next part of the show, he said: “Before we get started, don’t bring your ass up here if you don’t wanna be here. God don’t like ugly. But most certainly doesn’t feel too good about pretty privilege either!” His remarks immediately drew attention, as many believed they were a direct response to the viral video that had circulated only days earlier.
The controversy began during Usher's Nashville concert, where he continued one of the signature moments that has become a staple of his live performances over the years. During the segment, the singer randomly selects a female audience member to join him on stage for a playful, flirtatious interaction involving dancing, conversation, and close audience engagement in front of thousands of fans.
This time, the fan chosen was Gabrielle Cheyenne. However, unlike the enthusiastic reactions typically seen during these moments, she appeared noticeably stiff and uncomfortable, showing very little response to Usher's gestures. In videos that quickly spread across TikTok and X, Gabrielle maintained her distance and appeared reserved, leading many social media users to conclude that she was not enjoying the interaction. Some even suggested that Usher had found himself in an unusually awkward moment when the fan he invited on stage seemed visibly uninterested.

The clip quickly amassed millions of views and sparked heated debate online. Some criticized Gabrielle for appearing cold and disrespectful toward the artist, while others defended her, arguing that not everyone feels comfortable suddenly becoming the center of attention in front of a packed arena—especially during such an intimate performance segment.
As criticism mounted, Gabrielle Cheyenne spoke with TMZ to explain what had actually happened. She revealed that members of the production team had approached her before the concert and unexpectedly upgraded her to the VIP section. However, she insisted that no one properly explained what the experience would involve.
Gabrielle said: “I was approached first and upgraded to VIP. They don’t give you any instructions on who, what, when, where, or how. They told me that it was a possibility of me going on stage, but they didn’t confirm that until it was closer to time for me to go on stage. Of course, you’re getting to go on stage—why would I decline that?”
She also admitted that she had attended the concert primarily to see Chris Brown rather than Usher. “Me, solely, I went to the concert for Chris Brown. It’s nothing against Usher. I’m more of a Chris Brown fan than I am of Usher. Of course, it would’ve been a different reaction with Chris Brown; it wouldn’t have been the stiffness or whatever the internet is portraying.”
Her explanation prompted many people to reconsider the viral video. Numerous fans argued that Gabrielle's reaction was not meant as disrespect, but was simply the result of being caught off guard and not being a devoted Usher fan. Others, however, maintained that once she agreed to go on stage, she should have embraced the moment to avoid creating unnecessary misunderstandings.

For Usher, his comments in Birmingham appeared to be an effort to put the controversy behind him. His message was not aimed solely at Gabrielle Cheyenne, but at anyone who might be invited on stage during future performances. According to the singer, if someone does not genuinely feel comfortable participating, it is better to decline the invitation, since the goal of the segment is for both the artist and the fan to enjoy the experience.
Inviting audience members on stage has become one of Usher's signature concert traditions over the years. Many of these moments have gone viral, featuring the singer dancing closely with fans, feeding them cherries, or engaging in flirtatious performances that regularly generate millions of views online. These interactions have become one of the defining features of his live shows and have helped maintain their popularity.
However, not every audience interaction has unfolded smoothly. In recent years, Usher has occasionally found himself at the center of online discussions when videos captured mixed reactions from fans invited on stage. Even so, the overwhelming majority of participants have described the experience as unforgettable and have enthusiastically shared their memories after the concerts.
At 47, Usher remains one of the most influential R&B artists in American music. Since launching his career in the early 1990s, he has sold tens of millions of records worldwide, producing iconic hits including Yeah!, Burn, Confessions Part II, U Got It Bad, My Boo, and Love in This Club. His 2004 album Confessions is still widely regarded as one of the most successful R&B albums of the 21st century.
Beyond his commercial achievements, Usher has won eight Grammy Awards along with numerous Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards, and BET Awards. He is widely recognized for helping shape modern R&B and influencing an entire generation of younger artists.
In addition to music, Usher has appeared in several films and television productions and spent multiple seasons serving as a coach on The Voice. He has also remained deeply involved in philanthropy through his New Look Foundation, an organization he founded to help disadvantaged young people develop leadership skills and pursue educational opportunities.
Usher's personal life has also frequently attracted media attention. He was previously married to Tameka Foster before the couple divorced following a lengthy custody dispute. He later had a brief marriage to Grace Miguel. In 2024, he married longtime partner Jennifer Goicoechea, with whom he now shares a stable family life and several children.

Despite his remarkable career, Usher has not been without controversy. In 2017, he faced several lawsuits alleging that he failed to disclose his herpes diagnosis to sexual partners. The singer denied many of the allegations, and the cases were ultimately resolved through various legal outcomes. Although the controversy affected his public image at the time, Usher continued performing and gradually rebuilt his standing in the entertainment industry.
Today, Usher and Chris Brown continue their joint stadium tour with a string of sold-out performances across the United States. Following his remarks in Birmingham, many believe the singer has now established a clear boundary for one of his most recognizable concert traditions: only fans who genuinely want to participate should accept the invitation to join him on stage. In doing so, he hopes to avoid future misunderstandings while preserving the sense of connection that has long defined his live performances.
