Scotland Appoint Sebastien Pocognoli as New Head Coach on Two-Year Deal

SCOTLAND — Scotland have appointed Sebastien Pocognoli as their new head coach on a two-year contract, with the former Monaco boss taking over from Steve Clarke following the nation's World Cup group-stage exit. The 39-year-old arrives with an impressive recent record, having guided Union Saint-Gilloise to the Belgian league title before taking charge of Monaco. Pocognoli now faces the challenge of building on Scotland's return to the World Cup and preparing the team for the next phase of international competition.

Pocognoli Takes Over After Clarke's Departure

Pocognoli replaces Clarke, who stepped down after leading Scotland to their first World Cup appearance since 1998. The Tartan Army's campaign in the USA ended at the group stage after one victory from three matches, prompting Clarke to leave his position.

The new head coach admitted he was immediately excited when he learned of Scotland's interest. He praised the passion of the supporters and said he wants to build on the progress achieved under his predecessor. With the UEFA Nations League approaching, Pocognoli will have little time to settle into his new role before his first squad gathering next month.

“I will do everything I can to give them a team to be proud of.”

A Young Coach With a Rapid Rise

Pocognoli brings a relatively short but highly successful managerial career to the Scotland job. After retiring as a player in 2021, he moved into coaching, working with youth teams at Union Saint-Gilloise and Genk while also taking charge of Belgium's Under-16 and Under-18 sides.

His breakthrough came at Union Saint-Gilloise, where he was appointed first-team head coach in 2024. He subsequently guided the Belgian club to its first league title in 90 years and was named Belgian Coach of the Year in 2025. His team also competed in the Champions League before Pocognoli moved to Monaco.

His time in Monaco was brief, but he managed to secure European qualification before leaving the club in June. The Scotland position is therefore only his third senior men's head coaching role and his first appointment at international level.

Former Player With British Football Experience

Pocognoli is also familiar with British football from his playing career. The former left-back spent two years with West Bromwich Albion, making 21 appearances for the Premier League club, before joining Brighton on loan in the Championship.

Earlier in his career, he played for Genk and Standard Liège in Belgium and AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, where he was part of the team that won the Eredivisie title under Louis van Gaal in 2009. He also earned 13 senior caps for Belgium.

His playing experience in England, combined with his recent success in Belgium and European competition, gives Pocognoli a varied background as he prepares for his biggest coaching challenge yet.

A New Era for Scotland

Pocognoli has already begun assessing the squad and identifying areas where Scotland can improve. He said the weeks leading up to the first international camp will be focused on preparing for the Nations League and translating his ideas onto the training pitch.

The appointment represents a significant change in direction for Scotland. Pocognoli is younger and considerably less experienced at international level than Clarke, but his rapid rise in club management has convinced the Scottish Football Association that he is the right man to lead the national team forward.

His first major task will be to establish his tactical identity and ensure Scotland can build on the momentum generated by their long-awaited return to the World Cup.
