Cardiff City began their return to the Sky Bet Championship with a dramatic 1-1 draw against Welsh rivals Wrexham, as Rubin Colwill scored a stunning free-kick deep into stoppage time to snatch a point at Cardiff City Stadium.

Moore strikes early as Wrexham take control

Wrexham looked on course for a winning start after former Cardiff striker Kieffer Moore opened the scoring just two minutes and 26 seconds into Monday night’s encounter.

Danny Imray’s ball over the top found Moore with too much space, allowing the striker to let the ball bounce before striking a powerful effort across Cardiff goalkeeper Nathan Trott and into the net.

The goal was Moore’s seventh against Cardiff, making the Bluebirds the side he has scored against most during his career.

Wrexham continued to threaten after taking the lead. Just minutes after the opener, Callum Doyle’s header inside the six-yard box forced Trott into a sharp save, while Moore later came close to doubling the advantage when his header from a corner skimmed the top of the crossbar.

Cardiff struggled to create clear-cut opportunities for long periods, although the hosts gradually grew into the contest.

Wrexham go close to a second

The visitors continued to look dangerous after the interval and came within inches of extending their lead.

In the 58th minute, Callum Doyle chose to shoot rather than pass to teammates in a promising position and saw his effort crash against the left-hand post.

Cardiff, meanwhile, increased the pressure as the second half progressed. Head coach Brian Barry-Murphy introduced attacking options in an attempt to find a way through Wrexham’s defence.

The hosts appeared to be running out of time, however. With Wrexham defending their narrow advantage, Cardiff struggled to find the decisive opening.

Then, in the closing stages, the game suddenly turned.

Colwill produces a moment of magic

With five minutes of stoppage time already played, Wrexham captain Dom Hyam rose to defend a looping cross but headed the ball onto his own crossbar.

Moments later, Cardiff were awarded a free-kick after George Dobson brought down Joel Colwill just inches outside the penalty area.

It proved to be the defining moment of the match.

Rubin Colwill stepped up and delivered a spectacular strike, sending the ball high into the top-left corner in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

Wrexham goalkeeper Anthony Patterson was beaten by the quality of the effort as the Cardiff City Stadium erupted.

The goal completed a remarkable turnaround in momentum and ensured Cardiff avoided defeat in their first Championship match back in the second tier.

Barry-Murphy delighted with late response

Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy admitted that his side had endured a difficult evening, particularly after conceding so early.

Wrexham’s strong start and Moore’s goal initially disrupted Cardiff’s plans, but the Bluebirds gradually began to show more of their quality as the match progressed.

Barry-Murphy said he had a feeling Cardiff might get one final opportunity, although he acknowledged that he believed the game was probably already beyond his side before the late free-kick.

The Cardiff manager had attempted to change the dynamic of the game by putting more goalscorers on the pitch, and the approach eventually paid off.

Rubin Colwill’s free-kick provided the decisive moment and gave Cardiff a point from a match they had appeared destined to lose.

Parkinson rues missed opportunities

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson was understandably frustrated after seeing his team surrender the victory so late.

The Wrexham boss felt his side had created enough opportunities to put the game beyond Cardiff’s reach and believed the visitors had been comfortable for much of the contest.

Parkinson particularly highlighted the importance of giving away the late free-kick. With Cardiff pushing forward in the closing minutes, Wrexham had an opportunity to manage the situation more effectively, but Dobson’s foul handed the hosts a final chance.

Colwill made no mistake.

Despite the disappointment, Parkinson praised his team’s overall performance and attacking threat. He said there had been plenty of positive individual displays but acknowledged that Wrexham still had areas to improve.

A dramatic opening chapter to the Welsh rivalry

The 1-1 draw was the first meeting between Cardiff and Wrexham in 24 years, adding extra significance to an already highly anticipated Championship fixture.

For Wrexham, the result will feel like two points dropped after controlling large parts of the match and holding the lead until the final seconds.

The club had narrowly missed out on the play-offs last season, finishing just two points short of the places that would have given them a chance to secure a fourth consecutive promotion. A victory in Cardiff would therefore have represented an important early statement.

Instead, Rubin Colwill’s extraordinary late free-kick ensured the points were shared.

For Cardiff, the result offers encouragement after their return to the Championship. The Bluebirds were unable to produce a winning performance but showed enough resilience to remain in the contest until the very end.

And when the decisive opportunity arrived in the 98th minute, Colwill produced the moment of quality Cardiff needed.

Cardiff City 1-1 Wrexham. Kieffer Moore’s early strike looked set to give Wrexham all three points, but Rubin Colwill’s stunning stoppage-time free-kick ensured a dramatic share of the spoils in South Wales.
