Rodri Leaves Manchester City for Barcelona in £65.4m Transfer

Manchester City have agreed a £65.4 million deal to sell Rodri to Barcelona, bringing an end to the Spain international’s seven-year spell at the club. The 30-year-old midfielder, a World Cup winner and former Ballon d’Or holder, is set to sign a four-year contract with the Catalan side after Barcelona’s third offer finally convinced City to accept.

Barcelona finally get their man

Barcelona had already seen two bids rejected before reaching an agreement. Their initial offer of around £40m was turned down, followed by a second proposal worth £55m. The Spanish club returned with an improved offer that City ultimately considered too good to reject, particularly with Rodri having only one year remaining on his contract.

Rodri joined Manchester City in 2019 and became one of the most important players in the club’s modern history. During his seven seasons at the Etihad, he won four Premier League titles and the Champions League, scoring the winning goal against Inter Milan in the 2023 final. He also helped Spain win the World Cup before becoming the first City player to claim the Ballon d’Or.

A huge hole in City's midfield

Rodri’s departure leaves new City manager Enzo Maresca with a major challenge. The midfielder’s importance was underlined by City’s recent Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, which Rodri missed after returning to training only on Friday following minor back surgery.

Maresca acknowledged Rodri’s value, saying that every team needs a player of his quality. Sky Sports analysis also highlighted the size of the void he leaves, particularly in central midfield, where his ability to control matches and dictate the tempo had become fundamental to City’s style.

The timing makes the transfer even more significant, with City preparing to begin their Premier League campaign and Maresca attempting to build his own team following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

City already looking for replacements

Manchester City have been active in midfield this summer and had already broken the British transfer record to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m. They are also interested in Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, while Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez remains another potential target.

City had previously considered making a £120m move for Fernandez, although they missed Chelsea’s self-imposed Friday deadline. With Rodri now officially heading to Barcelona, the possibility of renewed interest in the Argentina international could become one of the major stories of the final weeks of the transfer window.

Meanwhile, Tijjani Reijnders is also set to leave City after the club agreed a deal worth around £51m with Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah. The combination of Rodri and Reijnders departing means Maresca could be facing a significant midfield rebuild before the season gets fully underway.

A new chapter for Rodri

For Barcelona, the signing represents a major statement of intent. For Manchester City, however, losing a player of Rodri’s importance creates a difficult problem that cannot easily be solved by one replacement.

Rodri’s career in Manchester included some of the biggest successes in City’s history, but after seven years, his next challenge will come in Spain with Barcelona. City must now move quickly to rebuild their midfield as Maresca begins the difficult task of replacing one of the most influential players of the Guardiola era.
