Mykhailo Mudryk cleared to return immediately after Chelsea doping ban resolved

Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been cleared to return to competitive football with immediate effect after his doping ban was officially resolved, ending nearly two years away from the game.

The 25-year-old Ukraine international had not played competitively since November 2024 after receiving a four-year suspension for a failed drug test that detected a low concentration of meldonium, a substance prohibited under anti-doping regulations at the time.

Mudryk appealed the sanction to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). During the appeal process, changes were introduced to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) reporting procedures. According to the Football Association, if Mudryk’s sample had been collected and analysed under the current technical standards, the concentration of meldonium found would not have been reported as a positive test and no anti-doping rule violation would have been charged.

In a statement, the FA confirmed that the appeal proceedings had been resolved by agreement between Mudryk, the FA and WADA. As part of that agreement, the Chelsea winger accepted that he had committed the anti-doping rule violations originally charged and agreed to a period of ineligibility equivalent to the time he had already served. The FA therefore confirmed that Mudryk is no longer suspended and is eligible to play immediately.

Chelsea welcomed the decision, saying the club was pleased that advances in scientific reporting standards had provided important context surrounding the case. The Premier League side also confirmed it would support Mudryk’s reintegration into the first-team squad and help him resume his professional career.

Mudryk also released a statement describing the past two years as “the most difficult period of my career.” He expressed gratitude to those who had supported him throughout the process and said he was thankful for the opportunity to return to football.

The winger joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal worth up to £88 million. Before his suspension, he made 73 appearances for the club and scored nine goals.

During his time away from football, Mudryk maintained his fitness by working with personal trainers away from Chelsea’s Cobham training ground, where he was not permitted to train while suspended. He was also recently seen volunteering in a charity shop in London.

The key question now is what role Mudryk will play under Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso this season. With the winger having been absent from competitive action for an extended period, Chelsea could choose to reintegrate him gradually or send him out on loan to rebuild match fitness and confidence.

For now, however, one thing is certain: Mykhailo Mudryk is eligible to play again immediately, and his football career can finally move forward after a case that was reshaped by changes in anti-doping scientific standards.
