Fire secure crucial win to join Trent Rockets at the summit
Welsh Fire moved level on points with Trent Rockets at the top of The Hundred standings after an impressive six-wicket victory over Southern Brave in Cardiff.
A brilliant unbeaten half-century from Matt Short guided the Fire to victory with five balls remaining, as they chased down a modest target to collect another important win in their push for qualification.
Both teams entered the match with confidence after recent victories, but it was Welsh Fire who produced the stronger performance on home soil. The result takes them to 16 points, matching the Rockets at the top of the men’s competition.
Fire bowlers put Brave under early pressure

After choosing to bowl first, Welsh Fire’s experienced bowling attack immediately made an impact.
Seamers Chris Woakes and Sam Cook struck inside the opening seven balls, reducing Southern Brave to 2-2 after dismissing Jamie Smith and Ben McKinney, both caught behind by wicketkeeper Phil Salt.
The pressure continued as Cook and Salt combined again to remove Nikhil Chaudhary, leaving the Brave struggling to build momentum.
Despite a slow start, Marcus Stoinis provided some much-needed resistance. The Australian all-rounder fought back with an aggressive half-century, reaching 50 from 35 balls and giving Southern Brave hope of posting a competitive total.
However, Welsh Fire’s bowling attack continued to dominate. Rachin Ravindra produced a superb spell of spin, taking consecutive wickets by removing Tristan Stubbs and Moeen Ali in successive deliveries.
Cook finished with outstanding figures of 3-14, while the Fire restricted their opponents to just 115-8, Southern Brave’s lowest-ever total in The Hundred.

Matt Short delivers match-winning innings
Southern Brave needed early wickets to defend their total, and Jofra Archer provided immediate excitement by smashing a six from the first ball he faced.
However, Archer was dismissed from the very next delivery, giving Welsh Fire control of the chase.
Matt Short and Joe Root then steadied the innings with a calm partnership. The pair guided the Fire to 60 before Root was dismissed by Chris Jordan, caught by McKinney.
Although Welsh Fire lost a few more wickets, Short remained composed and continued to control the chase. He reached his half-century from just 37 balls, using innovative shots including his trademark scoop and ramp shots against the Brave bowlers.
Supported by Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Short completed the job as Welsh Fire reached their target comfortably, with two wides finishing the match.
Short named Match Hero after all-round contribution
Short’s performance was the difference between the two sides. After leading the batting effort, he also contributed with the ball by taking the important wicket of David Miller late in the Southern Brave innings.
Speaking after the match, Short praised his teammates and highlighted the difficult conditions.
“It was tough early and it was a pretty spicy wicket with some quick bowlers,” Short said. “Our guys hit the right length and let the ball do the talking.”
His unbeaten 60 proved decisive and earned him the Match Hero award.
Brave face battle to qualify
Despite their strong start to the season, Southern Brave are now under pressure. The defeat was their fourth loss in six matches, and they have played more games than any other men’s team in the competition.
Welsh Fire, meanwhile, have won four of their five matches and remain firmly in the race for the knockout stages. However, their negative net run rate of -0.081 means they still trail Trent Rockets, who have a stronger figure of +0.760.
With the final stages approaching, every result becomes increasingly important as teams fight for a place in the finals of The Hundred on August 16.
