Jacquet marks Anfield debut with a goal
Liverpool ended their pre-season campaign on a positive note with a 2-0 victory over Como at Anfield, with new signing Jeremy Jacquet stealing much of the spotlight. The 21-year-old French defender, who joined Liverpool from Rennes in February, made his first appearance for the club and immediately made an impression by scoring the second goal shortly before half-time.
Cody Gakpo had already given Liverpool the lead in the 23rd minute after being brilliantly found by Jeremie Frimpong. The Dutch winger produced an excellent attacking move before Gakpo finished confidently to put Andoni Iraola's side ahead. Liverpool then doubled their advantage in the 44th minute when Gakpo turned provider, laying the ball across for Jacquet to tap home from close range.

Jacquet gives Iraola plenty to think about
Jacquet's performance was particularly encouraging for Liverpool. The young defender showed confidence in possession, aggression in challenges and a willingness to push forward from the back. His early involvement was warmly received by the Anfield crowd, who quickly responded to several positive moments from the Frenchman.
His performance was not completely flawless. Jacquet missed one challenge and was fortunate to have Frimpong provide cover, while a miskicked clearance briefly created danger. However, he responded well and produced an important interception inside the penalty area before finishing his first half with a goal.
Jacquet was replaced at half-time by Ronald Araujo, another recent arrival. His 45-minute appearance nevertheless strengthened the feeling that Liverpool may have found an important long-term option in defence.

Liverpool show signs of improvement
The victory was particularly valuable after Liverpool had surrendered a two-goal lead against Monaco in their previous pre-season match. Against Como, the Reds were more disciplined and managed to preserve their advantage throughout the second half.
The intensity dropped after the interval, allowing Como to enjoy more possession and create several opportunities. However, Liverpool remained organised enough to protect their clean sheet. Ryan Gravenberch came close to adding a third late in the match when his effort struck the crossbar.
Iraola admitted afterwards that Liverpool still have plenty of work to do, particularly after the break, but he was pleased with the team's attitude and improvement. The manager emphasised the importance of every player maintaining the required commitment and concentration throughout matches.
Gakpo and Frimpong among the standouts

Gakpo was one of Liverpool's most effective players, contributing both a goal and an assist. Frimpong also impressed, combining his attacking qualities with a more disciplined defensive display over the full 90 minutes.
Rio Ngumoha was another player to catch the eye, while Alexander Isak had an encouraging start before fading from the game. The Swedish striker hit the post early on with a bouncing effort but was unable to make the same impact he had produced against Monaco.
Florian Wirtz also struggled to influence proceedings as much as he had in the previous friendly. With the competitive season now approaching, Iraola will hope both players can quickly find their best form.
Newcastle now await Liverpool
The victory over Como was Liverpool's final pre-season fixture at Anfield, but the real test arrives next weekend. The Reds will begin their Premier League campaign away against Newcastle United at St James' Park on August 23.
For Iraola, there are encouraging signs but also areas that require improvement. Liverpool looked sharper defensively, recorded a clean sheet and saw one of their young defensive additions make an immediate impact.
Jacquet's debut will be particularly encouraging for the club. A goal on his first appearance, combined with a composed defensive display, has given Liverpool supporters another reason for optimism ahead of the new campaign.
The 2-0 win does not answer every question surrounding Iraola's Liverpool, but it provides the confidence-building result the team needed before the Premier League begins. Now, the preparation is over and the pressure of competitive football starts.
