Lando Norris claims first win of 2026 as McLaren ends drought in dramatic Hungarian Grand Prix

Lando Norris finally broke through for his first Formula 1 victory of the 2026 season after surviving an intense early battle with McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri and a dramatic finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The reigning world champion converted pole position into victory to hand McLaren its first win of the campaign, finishing ahead of Max Verstappen and championship leader Kimi Antonelli after a race packed with strategic twists, retirements and costly mistakes.

McLaren teammates clash in thrilling opening stages

Norris started from pole but immediately came under pressure from Piastri, who launched an aggressive attack on the opening lap to briefly seize the lead.

The two McLaren drivers raced wheel-to-wheel during the opening stint before Norris gradually found superior pace.

Following the second round of pit stops, Norris reclaimed first place after Piastri lost valuable time while making contact with Williams driver Carlos Sainz as the pair negotiated traffic.

It proved to be the decisive moment in the race.

Piastri heartbreak opens the door

Just as McLaren appeared set for a dominant one-two finish, disaster struck.

Running comfortably in second place, Piastri suffered a gearbox failure that forced him to retire with only 14 laps remaining, triggering a late Virtual Safety Car.

The retirement removed Norris' closest challenger and allowed the Briton to cruise home for his long-awaited first victory of the season.

Ferrari strategy backfires again

Ferrari looked capable of challenging for victory but saw their hopes unravel through strategy and execution.

The team opted to pit both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc during the late Virtual Safety Car, but the decision proved costly.

Hamilton compounded Ferrari's problems by exceeding the pit lane speed limit, earning a five-second penalty that dropped him behind Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli.

Despite fresher tyres, Hamilton was unable to recover the lost positions before the chequered flag.

Verstappen salvages second, Antonelli strengthens title bid

Max Verstappen produced one of the drives of the afternoon to secure second place after an impressive final stint.

Earlier in the race, the Red Bull driver executed a brilliant overtake on Hamilton into Turn One, a move that ultimately proved crucial in the battle for the podium.

Behind him, Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli successfully defended against Hamilton's relentless pressure to finish third and extend his championship advantage.

Antonelli now leads Hamilton by 50 points in the drivers' standings, while George Russell trails by 59 points after recovering from an early stall to finish seventh.

Hamilton left frustrated after another missed opportunity

Hamilton once again demonstrated impressive race pace but was left to reflect on another opportunity slipping away.

Ferrari's strategic gamble failed to pay off, while the pit lane speeding penalty erased any realistic chance of fighting for victory.

The seven-time world champion eventually crossed the line in fifth place behind teammate Charles Leclerc.

Tight midfield battle delivers more drama

Further down the order, Racing Bulls teammates Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad enjoyed an entertaining battle with Audi's Nico Hulkenberg throughout the race.

Lawson eventually came out on top to secure valuable championship points, with Hulkenberg and Lindblad completing the remaining points-paying positions.

Red Bull's Isack Hadjar also impressed by finishing sixth.

Summer break begins with title race wide open

The Hungarian Grand Prix marked the final race before Formula 1's four-week summer break.

Although Antonelli remains firmly in control of the championship, Norris' breakthrough victory gives McLaren renewed momentum heading into the second half of the season.

With Ferrari still searching for flawless execution and Verstappen continuing to maximise every opportunity, the battle for the 2026 title promises to intensify when Formula 1 returns at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort next month.
