Katy Perry Speaks Out After the White House Uses “Firework” in Military Strikes Video: “I Am Deeply Appalled and Angry”

Katy Perry has publicly voiced her opposition after her hit song Firework was used as the soundtrack for a video posted on the White House’s official TikTok account. The clip featured footage of military strikes targeting Iran alongside the caption, “Iran has been warned.” The pairing of an uplifting anthem with military imagery quickly sparked widespread debate across social media.

Shortly after the video began circulating online, Katy Perry shared a statement on X expressing her views. The singer said she had never been informed in advance, nor had she given permission for her song to be used in the video.

Katy Perry wrote: “I am deeply appalled and angry to see ‘Firework’ used on the @WhiteHouse TikTok account as a backing track for video footage of military strikes. I did not approve this, I was not asked, and I absolutely do not condone it.”

According to the singer, using Firework in this context completely distorted the meaning she intended when writing the song. Perry explained that the track was created for people going through some of the darkest moments in their lives, with the hope of helping them rediscover confidence and inner strength.

She continued: “I wrote this song to be an anthem of hope, healing, and inner strength for people going through their darkest personal moments. To see a message of self-worth and upliftment weaponized to soundtrack destruction and violence is a complete violation of everything my song stands for.”

Concluding her statement, Perry reaffirmed her beliefs about music and the values she has embraced throughout her career. “My music is for bringing people together, not celebrating warfare.” Her comments quickly drew significant attention from fans and international media alike.

This is far from the first time a high-profile artist has objected to their music being used in political or military messaging without consent. Over the years, numerous singers and bands have demanded that political organizations and campaign teams stop using their songs, arguing that doing so could falsely imply the artists’ endorsement or political stance.

For Katy Perry, Firework remains one of the defining songs of her career. Released in 2010 as part of her blockbuster album Teenage Dream, the track became a global smash hit, topped the Billboard Hot 100, and earned multiple Grammy nominations. With lyrics encouraging listeners to embrace their self-worth, Firework has frequently been used in educational programs, community initiatives, and mental health awareness campaigns.

In previous interviews, Perry revealed that Firework was inspired by her desire to send a message of hope to those struggling with loneliness, insecurity, or self-doubt. She has often said that everyone has the ability to shine if they believe in themselves. For that reason, seeing the song paired with imagery related to armed conflict led her to feel that its original meaning had been fundamentally misrepresented.

Born in California in 1984, Katy Perry grew up in a Christian household and initially began her musical career performing gospel music. However, it was not until 2008 that she achieved her breakthrough with I Kissed a Girl, a chart-topping single that launched her into international pop stardom.

In the years that followed, Perry released a string of successful hits, including California Gurls, Teenage Dream, E.T., Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), Roar, Dark Horse, and Firework. Her album Teenage Dream made history by becoming the first album by a female artist to produce five Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles, matching a record previously achieved only by Michael Jackson’s Bad.

Beyond her commercial success, Katy Perry has been widely recognized for continuously reinventing her public image. From her colorful, playful persona during the early years of her career to a more mature artistic direction in later projects, she has maintained a unique presence in the pop music industry.

In addition to her recording career, Perry became a familiar face on television as a judge on American Idol. Across multiple seasons, she earned praise for her approachable personality, candid feedback, and supportive mentorship of aspiring performers.

Regarding her personal life, Katy Perry married comedian Russell Brand in 2010. However, the marriage lasted only about 14 months before the couple divorced. She later began a relationship with actor Orlando Bloom. The two became engaged in 2019 and welcomed their daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom, in 2020. Despite recurring breakup rumors over the years, they have continued to maintain a respectful relationship while co-parenting their daughter.

Throughout her career, Perry has also been actively involved in charitable work. As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, she has participated in campaigns supporting children, promoting education, and raising funds for humanitarian causes around the world. She has also frequently used her platform to speak out on social and political issues she considers important.

Katy Perry’s career has not always been without challenges. Following the extraordinary success of Teenage Dream, some of her later albums did not achieve the same level of commercial performance. The singer has openly discussed experiencing periods of intense pressure and emotional struggles while learning to balance fame with her personal life.

She has also faced several controversies involving copyright disputes, stage performances, and public remarks throughout her career. However, rather than engaging in direct confrontations through the media, Perry has generally chosen to explain her perspective in interviews or through her social media platforms.

Her latest statement demonstrates that Katy Perry remains committed to protecting the original meaning behind the music she creates. To her, Firework is far more than a commercially successful hit—it represents hope, healing, and belief in one’s own worth. For that reason, the singer says she cannot accept seeing the song used in a way that she believes contradicts the values it has stood for over the past decade.
