Jordan Cox Stakes His Claim as England’s Next Wicketkeeper

Broad backs Cox after impressive Test debut

Jordan Cox has given England another selection decision to consider after making a composed 73 in his first Test innings against Pakistan at Headingley. The Essex batter impressed at No 3, and former England fast bowler Stuart Broad believes his performance could eventually open the door to a new role behind the stumps, potentially putting pressure on Jamie Smith’s position as wicketkeeper.

Cox was handed his chance after Jacob Bethell’s injury created an opening in England’s top order. The 24-year-old had previously been forced to wait for his Test debut after breaking his thumb in training in December 2024, while Bethell subsequently moved ahead of him in the pecking order. Cox has now responded with a strong first impression, scoring 73 from 100 balls and showing the temperament required at Test level.

Broad believes Cox’s versatility could make him an increasingly attractive option for England. While his immediate opportunity has come at No 3, the former England bowler suggested Cox’s ability to keep wicket could give the selectors another route when considering the balance of the side. His performance also strengthens his case for a regular place, particularly if he can continue producing runs while contributing behind the stumps.

Lawrence offered chance to solve all-rounder dilemma

Broad also highlighted Dan Lawrence as another player with a major opportunity in England’s current side. Lawrence has been asked to bat at No 6 and contribute with the ball, with Broad pointing to his potential to provide England with the extra all-round option they need. He has taken only nine wickets for Surrey this year at an average above 70, but Broad believes useful contributions with the ball could be enough to give England greater flexibility.

With South Africa next on England’s schedule before the Ashes, Lawrence has an important period ahead of him. Broad described the role as a significant opportunity for a player who has moved in and out of the Test side, opened the batting and regularly filled different positions for the team. England will hope he can establish himself by contributing in both disciplines.

Cox refuses to settle for a maiden half-century

Despite reaching his first Test fifty, Cox admitted he felt he could have done more after being dismissed for 73. Rather than simply celebrating his achievement, he said his focus was on making the most of the opportunity and establishing himself at international level. His determination reflects the approach that has helped him score heavily in county cricket.

Cox also acknowledged that England had several batters who reached half-centuries without converting their starts into much bigger scores. He suggested that turning those fifties into hundreds and potentially 150-plus scores would have put England in an even stronger position. Nevertheless, his own 73 has given England another reason to consider his long-term place in the team. With his batting opportunity secured for now, Cox will be determined to make his second chance at Test cricket count.
