Joao Pedro's nine-minute hat-trick rescues Chelsea as Xabi Alonso wins thrilling 10-goal debut

Xabi Alonso's first match as Chelsea head coach delivered everything a football fan could ask for—goals, comebacks, drama and a stunning late hat-trick from Joao Pedro as the Blues defeated Western Sydney Wanderers 6-4 in a remarkable pre-season friendly in Sydney.

Chelsea found themselves trailing on three separate occasions against the A-League side before Joao Pedro came off the bench to inspire a spectacular comeback, scoring three goals in just nine minutes to hand Alonso a winning start.

Teenager Satpaev opens the Alonso era

Chelsea made the perfect start when 17-year-old Dastan Satpaev wrote his name into the club's history books by scoring the first goal of the Xabi Alonso era after only six minutes.

The talented youngster finished off a flowing team move that showcased the quick passing and attacking philosophy Alonso is hoping to establish at Stamford Bridge.

However, Chelsea's early dominance quickly disappeared as defensive mistakes allowed Western Sydney to fight back.

Defensive frailties expose youthful Blues

Despite controlling possession for long spells, Chelsea struggled badly without the ball.

The hosts equalized through Pantazapoulos before Hammond punished more hesitant defending to give Western Sydney a surprise lead.

Chelsea responded with another excellent team move finished by Dario Essugo, but the defensive issues continued after the break as Scicluna restored the Australian club's advantage.

Even after Alonso introduced several first-team stars midway through the second half, another costly mistake gifted substitute Awan Lual a goal to make it 4-3 for Western Sydney with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Joao Pedro changes everything

Chelsea's comeback was sparked by one man.

Joao Pedro needed only minutes after entering the pitch to make his impact, first leveling the score with a composed finish before putting Chelsea ahead after being brilliantly released by Cole Palmer.

The Brazilian completed his hat-trick from close range after a corner, scoring three times in just nine minutes to transform what had looked like a disappointing opening match into a memorable victory.

His clinical finishing underlined exactly why Chelsea invested heavily to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

Palmer and Gittens shine after coming on

Cole Palmer immediately raised Chelsea's attacking quality after replacing one of the youngsters.

Operating centrally behind the striker, Palmer created chances, dictated play and provided the assist for Joao Pedro's second goal.

Jamie Gittens also made an instant impact by scoring only two minutes after entering the match, while Estevao constantly threatened despite his misplaced pass leading to one of Western Sydney's goals.

The trio demonstrated the attacking firepower Alonso will have available once the full squad returns.

Alonso sees positives despite defensive concerns

While pleased with the victory, Alonso admitted there was plenty for his players to improve.

The Chelsea boss highlighted the team's game management and ability to respond under pressure but acknowledged they struggled when pressed aggressively by the opposition.

He described the match as an important learning experience, believing difficult moments like these will help accelerate the team's development ahead of the new season.

Encouraging signs from Chelsea's youngsters

Several academy players impressed despite the chaotic nature of the contest.

Reggie Watson completed the full 90 minutes with an energetic midfield display, while Reggie Walsh linked play intelligently throughout.

Satpaev's early goal was another reminder of Chelsea's exciting young talent, although the teenager understandably faded as the match progressed.

Winning start before tougher tests await

The entertaining victory gives Alonso a positive beginning to his Chelsea career, but sterner challenges lie ahead.

The Blues continue their pre-season tour with fixtures against Tottenham, Juventus, AC Milan and Real Sociedad before the Premier League campaign begins.

While Chelsea's attacking quality looks promising, their defensive organization will require significant improvement if Alonso is to build a genuine title contender during his first season in charge.
