Hearts' hopes of reaching the UEFA Champions League group stage came to a disappointing end after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Sturm Graz at Tynecastle, sealing a crushing 6-0 aggregate loss in the second qualifying round.
Despite an encouraging opening spell, Wouter Vrancken's side never looked capable of overturning the four-goal deficit from the first leg as the Austrian champions comfortably booked their place in the next round.
Mission impossible after first-leg collapse

Having been beaten 4-0 in Austria a week earlier, Hearts arrived at the second leg needing one of the greatest European comebacks in the club's history.
Head coach Wouter Vrancken admitted before kick-off that his players would have to produce an "almost perfect" performance to keep their Champions League dream alive.
Instead, their European campaign ended quietly as Sturm Graz controlled the tie from start to finish.
Hearts begin brightly but fail to capitalize
Backed by a passionate Tynecastle crowd, Hearts made an energetic start and briefly gave supporters hope of a miraculous comeback.
Malachi Fagan-Walcott came closest early on, glancing a header narrowly wide from Alexandros Kyziridis' free-kick before Blair Spittal saw a promising effort blocked inside the penalty area.
However, the Scottish side failed to convert their early pressure into goals, allowing Sturm Graz to gradually regain control.
Schwolow keeps Hearts alive

Goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow, playing what is expected to be his final match before returning to Germany to join Mainz, produced several outstanding saves to prevent an even heavier defeat.
He denied Szymon Wlodarczyk in a one-on-one situation before making another excellent stop from Seedy Jatta, with captain Stephen Kingsley clearing the rebound off the goal line.
Jatta later thought he had opened the scoring, only for VAR to rule the goal out after determining he had fouled Harry Milne in the build-up.
Austrian champions finish the job

Whatever hopes Hearts still held disappeared midway through the second half.
Simon Seidl fired a superb finish beyond Schwolow and into the far corner after collecting Jon Gorenc's flick-on to make it 1-0 on the night.
Only four minutes later, Emran Soglo reacted quickest inside the box to score from close range after his initial effort had been blocked, completing another comfortable victory for the visitors.
The two late goals reflected Sturm Graz's superiority across both legs.
Injury setbacks add to Hearts' frustration

The evening became even more difficult for Hearts after both Stephen Kingsley and Alexandros Kyziridis were forced off with injuries.
The setbacks will concern Vrancken ahead of the start of the Scottish Premiership season, with Aberdeen awaiting on Saturday in Hearts' league opener.
The Belgian coach will now have little time to regroup before domestic action begins.
European journey continues in the Europa League
Although eliminated from the Champions League, Hearts' European campaign is not over.
The Edinburgh club now drops into the Europa League third qualifying round, where they will face either Portuguese giants Benfica or Swiss side St. Gallen.
St. Gallen currently holds a narrow advantage after winning the first leg 2-1, setting up another challenging assignment for Hearts.
Lessons for Vrancken ahead of the new season
The defeat highlighted both the promise and limitations of Hearts under their new manager.
There were flashes of attacking intent and determination, particularly during the opening stages, but the gulf in quality between the two sides ultimately proved too great.
With domestic football now taking priority, Vrancken's task will be to restore confidence quickly and ensure Hearts respond positively as they chase success in the Scottish Premiership while continuing their European adventure in the Europa League.
