England Miss Out on Commonwealth Games Medal After Heavy Defeat to Australia

GLASGOW — England’s Vitality Roses ended their Commonwealth Games campaign without a medal after suffering a comprehensive 68-50 defeat to Australia in the bronze-medal match at the Hydro. The Diamonds produced a dominant display from the opening quarter, ensuring England were unable to recover and extending Australia’s remarkable record of winning a medal at every Commonwealth Games netball tournament since the sport was introduced in 1998.

England entered the match hoping to bounce back from a difficult semi-final and secure a podium finish, but Australia quickly imposed themselves on the contest. Although the Roses briefly stayed level at 9-9 during the opening quarter, the Diamonds responded with a devastating burst, scoring 10 of the next 12 goals to establish a commanding 19-10 lead. That advantage proved decisive, with England never able to reduce the deficit to a manageable margin.

Australia continued to control the game through the second quarter, with their attack operating with impressive accuracy and composure. By half-time the Diamonds led 35-24, leaving England with a significant task after the interval. Sophie Garbin was particularly influential for Australia, contributing a crucial run of goals that prevented the Roses from building any sustained momentum. Every time England threatened to close the gap, Australia responded immediately and restored their cushion.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with England struggling to generate the intensity and consistency required to challenge one of the world’s strongest teams. Australia’s defensive pressure disrupted the Roses’ attacking rhythm, while their shooters remained clinical throughout. A disappointing final quarter saw the Diamonds extend their lead further, eventually sealing an emphatic 18-goal victory and claiming the bronze medal in convincing fashion.

England captain Fran Williams admitted that the defeat was deeply frustrating for the squad. “It was just so tough,” she said after the match. “With such a short turnaround after the semi-final, it’s difficult to prepare for a game when you would rather be playing in the final. We’re gutted and really disappointed with how the score got away from us.” Despite the result, England’s campaign was viewed by many as a respectable effort given the turbulent build-up to the tournament, including the departure of head coach Jess Thirlby earlier this year.

For Australia, the victory was an important response after their heartbreaking 46-45 semi-final loss to Jamaica. Captain Liz Watson praised her team’s resilience, saying the Diamonds were determined to make a statement after a painful defeat. “Yesterday was a really tough day for the whole group,” she said. “We’re disappointed not to be in the final, but we’re proud to wear this dress and continue Australia’s tradition of success.” The bronze medal means Australia have now won a medal in all seven Commonwealth Games netball tournaments.

The tournament concluded with New Zealand defeating Jamaica 56-48 in the gold-medal match, securing the Commonwealth title after an impressive campaign. Jamaica took silver, Australia bronze, and England were left reflecting on a tournament that showed moments of promise but ultimately ended without the medal they had hoped to bring home. The Roses will now turn their attention to rebuilding ahead of the next major international competitions.
