Cristian Romero completes Atletico Madrid transfer as Tottenham receive £34.2m fee

Cristian Romero has officially completed his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Atletico Madrid, bringing an end to a five-year spell in North London. The Argentina international joins the Spanish club on a five-year contract after Atletico finalized a deal worth £34.2 million, with Spurs also securing a 15 percent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.

The transfer had been expected for several weeks, with Atletico long regarded as Romero’s preferred destination despite interest from Inter Milan and Arsenal. Tottenham were prepared to sanction the departure of their captain if a suitable offer arrived, and the move was confirmed after Romero publicly announced his farewell to Spurs supporters before the club finalized the transfer.

Romero leaves Tottenham having made 124 appearances across five seasons and playing a major role in ending the club’s 17-year wait for a trophy. In an emotional message posted on social media, the 28-year-old thanked teammates, coaches, staff, and supporters, saying he had fulfilled his dream of leaving his mark on the club’s history by helping Tottenham lift silverware again. He described the club as his home and said he would always remember the memories and relationships built during his time in London.

His final season at Tottenham was mixed, however. Romero was sent off twice during the club’s difficult Premier League campaign and later missed the closing stages of the season because of a knee injury. He also faced criticism from some supporters over reports that he had considered attending a match involving his boyhood club Belgrano instead of Tottenham’s crucial final league fixture, although he ultimately attended the Spurs match.

The defender’s departure represents another significant change for Tottenham as the club reshapes its squad following a turbulent campaign. While Romero was widely regarded as one of the team’s most talented players, questions over his consistency, fitness, and long-term commitment to the club had fueled speculation throughout the summer transfer window.

For Atletico Madrid, Romero adds experience, leadership, and international pedigree to Diego Simeone’s defensive options. A World Cup winner with Argentina, he is expected to become a central figure in Atletico’s back line as the Spanish side looks to strengthen its squad for both domestic and European competition.

Tottenham, meanwhile, receive a substantial transfer fee and retain a future financial interest through the sell-on clause, providing flexibility as they continue to rebuild under a new era. Romero’s move closes an important chapter for Spurs and opens a fresh challenge for one of Argentina’s leading defenders in La Liga.
