BURNLEY — Burnley produced a remarkable late comeback to earn a 2-2 draw against West Ham United at Turf Moor, denying the visitors what looked set to be a winning start to life back in the Championship. The Hammers appeared firmly in control after goals from Max Kilman and Manor Solomon put them two goals ahead, but Zian Flemming's late double dramatically changed the outcome. The result gave Burnley manager Nicky Hayen a first league point on his 46th birthday.
West Ham Take Control

West Ham made the brighter start and opened the scoring after just 10 minutes. Jarrod Bowen delivered a dangerous free-kick and Max Kilman escaped his marker to head beyond Mads Hermansen for his first goal in 68 appearances for the club. Burnley had opportunities of their own, but too often failed to make the right decisions in the final third.
The visitors continued to look the more composed side after the break, with Manor Solomon providing an additional attacking threat. West Ham eventually doubled their advantage in the 72nd minute when Mohamadou Kante's run and cross created confusion inside the Burnley area, allowing Solomon to fire home. With West Ham holding a 2-0 lead, an away victory appeared increasingly likely.
Flemming Sparks Incredible Comeback

Burnley refused to surrender, however, and Flemming became the central figure of their comeback. After earlier chances had gone begging, the midfielder was given a route back into the game when Ollie Scarles brought down Marcus Edwards inside the penalty area. Flemming stepped up and sent Hermansen the wrong way from the spot in the 83rd minute.
The comeback was completed deep into stoppage time. Following a scramble inside the West Ham penalty area, the ball fell to Flemming, who kept his composure to find the bottom corner and make it 2-2. The late equaliser preserved Burnley's unbeaten home league run dating back to April 2023 and turned what appeared to be a defeat into a hugely encouraging point.
West Ham's Promotion Ambitions Tested
The draw will nevertheless feel like two points dropped for West Ham, who are among the favourites for an immediate return to the Premier League. Despite losing players including Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville for significant transfer fees, the Hammers have retained key figures such as captain Jarrod Bowen. They also recently strengthened their squad by breaking the Championship transfer record with a £22m move for Arne Engels, although the midfielder was not yet available for this match.
Manager Nuno Espirito Santo admitted afterwards that West Ham need additional attacking options, particularly after Pablo felt a problem in his calf. The manager also acknowledged that his team failed to control possession effectively enough after taking a 2-0 lead. Former West Ham goalkeeper Rob Green similarly argued that the match highlighted the need for another forward, with the club pursuing Leeds striker Joel Piroe.

Hayen Praises Burnley Character
For Burnley, the comeback provided evidence of the resilience Hayen wants from his team. The manager admitted that his side did not deserve to lose and praised the players for showing character after falling two goals behind. Drawing against one of the division's strongest promotion contenders will give Burnley confidence, particularly after the dramatic nature of the recovery.
The final score also underlined the fine margins likely to define the Championship season. West Ham had appeared to have done enough for victory, but Burnley's persistence ensured that Flemming's late intervention changed everything. For the Hammers, the challenge now is to turn promising performances into results, while Burnley can take considerable encouragement from the way they fought back when defeat seemed inevitable.
