Bryson DeChambeau Hopes LIV Golf Gets ‘One More Shot’ to Secure Its Future

DeChambeau admits LIV Golf faces major challenge

Bryson DeChambeau has admitted LIV Golf faces a difficult battle to secure its long-term future but hopes the Saudi-backed circuit will be given “one more shot” to continue beyond the 2026 season. The two-time US Open champion spoke after opening with a five-under 65 in Indianapolis, leaving him three shots behind early leader Laurie Canter.

DeChambeau has been closely involved in discussions about LIV Golf’s future despite his own contract expiring at the end of the season. He acknowledged the difficulties facing the league but stressed that people behind the scenes are working to find a solution that benefits both players and fans.

‘We definitely have a lot against us’

“Look, it’s tough - it’s not easy,” DeChambeau said. “We definitely have a lot against us.”

The American believes LIV Golf still has an opportunity to demonstrate the value it can bring to the sport. He pointed to the league’s global schedule and its impact in markets including South Africa, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Indianapolis.

“I think we just have a bit of a responsibility to continue to show this,” DeChambeau said. “If it works, it works and that’s awesome. If it doesn’t, we’ll figure things out and time will move on.”

He also called for a more open-minded approach towards the circuit, suggesting that time could help ease some of the divisions created by the emergence of LIV Golf and its rivalry with established professional golf.

“My wish is that people give us one more shot and be open minded,” DeChambeau said.

LIV chief praises DeChambeau’s commitment

LIV Golf chief executive Scott O’Neil has also highlighted DeChambeau’s efforts to help secure the league’s future. O’Neil said the American had become a strong advocate for LIV Golf and praised his commitment to growing the sport beyond his performances on the course.

DeChambeau’s involvement comes as LIV Golf works against a tight deadline to finalise fresh investment. O’Neil has warned of a “very compressed timeline” while the league attempts to establish its next financial and competitive model.

There is already speculation about what a potential 2027 season could look like, with LIV Golf hoping to feature five marquee Team Championships across five continents and five team Signature Events positioned around the four major championships. A proposed new investor has also met with players during this week’s event.

Players encouraged by proposed LIV 2.0

Dean Burmester said players had received a positive impression from their meeting with the proposed investor in Indianapolis. While acknowledging that the uncertainty surrounding the league has affected some players, the South African described the proposed new model as promising and potentially sustainable.

“It was a really positive meeting and long may it continue,” Burmester said.

For DeChambeau, the immediate priority remains competing on the course while simultaneously helping to secure the future of the league he helped make one of the most disruptive forces in professional golf. With LIV Golf facing major financial and structural questions, the coming months could determine whether its next chapter begins in 2027 or whether the circuit reaches the end of its current run.
