Gunners move for England defender amid defensive injury crisis
Arsenal have agreed a £51 million deal to sign Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, strengthening their defence ahead of the new Premier League season. The 28-year-old England international has two years remaining on his Villa contract but is now set to move to the reigning Premier League champions.
The deal comes as Arsenal face a shortage of defensive options, with William Saliba and Jurrien Timber both sidelined by injuries. Arsenal had also explored a possible move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah, but have instead decided to push ahead with a deal for Konsa. The two England internationals share a similar profile, with both capable of operating at centre-back and right-back.

Arsenal reach compromise with Aston Villa
Villa had initially valued Konsa at around £60m, while Arsenal were hoping to negotiate a lower fee. The two clubs ultimately reached a compromise worth £51m, bringing an end to the defender's seven-year spell at Villa Park.
Konsa has been absent from Aston Villa's pre-season preparations and did not feature in the club's Super Cup fixture or their friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach. His departure could also trigger another move in the transfer market, with Villa reportedly interested in Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo as a potential replacement. Chelsea are prepared to listen to offers for the 28-year-old, who has also attracted interest from Marseille, Benfica and Sevilla.
A defender suited to Arteta's demands
Konsa's statistics provide a strong indication of why Arsenal have targeted him. According to Sky Sports, he won more ground duels than any other Premier League player last season, finishing ahead of Virgil van Dijk and Arsenal's own Gabriel. He also recorded the best ground-duel success rate among Premier League defenders.
That profile fits closely with the demands of Mikel Arteta's system, where defensive versatility and the ability to win individual battles are crucial. Konsa's capacity to play both centrally and at right-back would give Arsenal additional flexibility while Saliba and Timber recover. Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White remain options in those positions, although White's recent injury record has been a concern.

Arsenal close to completing their defensive business
The move would represent another significant addition to an Arsenal squad that has already been strengthened ahead of the title defence. The Gunners enter the campaign as favourites to retain the Premier League crown after beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield.
Arteta has made no secret of the club's ambitions, saying Arsenal want to become "the best club in the world" and stressing the importance of building a squad capable of competing at the highest level. With Konsa seemingly on his way, Arsenal's defensive depth will receive another major boost.
The England defender must be registered by midday on Thursday if he is to be eligible for Arsenal's Premier League opener against Coventry City on Friday night. With the Konsa deal close to completion, Arsenal can now turn their attention back to another priority that has occupied much of their summer: finding the forward they still want to add to their squad.
