Andrew Garfield has opened up once again about the possibility of putting on the Spider-Man suit, revealing that he would only return if the project took the iconic superhero in a completely unexpected direction unlike anything audiences have seen before.

In a recent interview with The Playlist, the 42-year-old actor and two-time Academy Award nominee was asked whether he would be willing to reprise the role of Peter Parker in the future. Rather than ruling out the idea entirely, Garfield explained that he remains open to returning—but only if the film is bold enough to break new ground.
Andrew said: "I would need it to be very, very odd. I would need it to be very strange, and I would need it to be completely unconventional and almost—I wouldn't say boring—but I would want it to be just completely unexpected, like a genre of Spider-Man that you've never seen before, that feels very left field."
To illustrate what he had in mind, the actor suggested that he would be especially interested in a Spider-Man story told as a road trip movie. According to Garfield, taking the web-slinger on an unconventional cross-country adventure would be fresh enough to convince him to return.

This is not the first time Andrew Garfield has expressed that opinion. During last year's Middle East Film & Comic Con, he also admitted that he still has a deep affection for the character that changed his career.
At the time, Andrew said he would "love to play the character again in some capacity," but stressed that any return would have to be "very weird."
He added: "I would want to do something very unique and offbeat and surprising."
Garfield's latest comments immediately sparked renewed discussion among Marvel fans. Ever since the enormous success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, audiences have continued hoping to see all three live-action Spider-Men—Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland—share the screen once again.
The last time Andrew portrayed Peter Parker was in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. The blockbuster marked the first time all three cinematic Spider-Men united in the same film, creating one of the most celebrated moments in Marvel Cinematic Universe history.
His return received widespread praise from both critics and audiences. Many fans felt Garfield delivered a more mature, emotionally layered version of Peter Parker, shaped by the heartbreaking experiences his character endured throughout The Amazing Spider-Man films.
Following the film's success, countless fans began campaigning for Sony Pictures to develop The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in order to complete Garfield's unfinished story. However, the studio has yet to officially announce such a project.
At the same time, Garfield has repeatedly dismissed rumors suggesting that he would appear in Avengers: Doomsday. The actor has confirmed that he is not involved in the film and also does not appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
While Garfield currently has no confirmed plans to return, Tom Holland remains the Marvel Cinematic Universe's official Spider-Man. To date, the British actor has portrayed the beloved superhero in seven MCU films, with both Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios continuing to express confidence in his future as Peter Parker.

Born in Los Angeles in 1983 and raised in England, Andrew Garfield first attracted widespread attention through television before breaking into Hollywood with The Social Network in 2010. His portrayal of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin earned critical acclaim and opened the door to major film opportunities.
In 2012, Garfield officially became the new Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man, succeeding Tobey Maguire. The film grossed more than $750 million worldwide and established him as one of Hollywood's most promising leading actors. He returned as Peter Parker in the sequel released in 2014.
Although Sony's original Spider-Man franchise ended after the studio partnered with Marvel to introduce the character into the MCU, Garfield's version of Peter Parker remains a fan favorite thanks to its emotional depth—particularly his heartbreaking romance with Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone.
Beyond superhero films, Andrew Garfield has built a reputation as one of Hollywood's most respected dramatic actors. He received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor for Hacksaw Ridge (2016) and Tick, Tick... Boom! (2021), while also winning a Golden Globe for his acclaimed performance in Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical drama.
Away from the spotlight, Garfield is known for being intensely private about his personal life. He famously dated Emma Stone for several years after the two met while filming The Amazing Spider-Man. Although the couple eventually separated, they have remained close friends and continue to speak about one another with admiration and respect.

In recent years, Garfield has been linked to several women in the entertainment industry, but he has rarely confirmed any romantic relationships. The actor has often said that he prefers to keep his personal life separate from his professional career so he can remain fully focused on his work.
With his latest remarks, Andrew Garfield has not completely closed the door on returning as Spider-Man. However, rather than revisiting the familiar superhero formula, he believes any comeback would have to be bold, unconventional, and creatively fearless. In Garfield's view, only a Spider-Man story that is genuinely "very weird" would make stepping back into Peter Parker's shoes truly worthwhile.
