Arsenal have confirmed that William Saliba will be sidelined for an extended period after suffering a back injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup with France.
The French international centre-back was forced off after just 30 minutes of France's semi-final defeat to Spain. Following his return to London, specialist medical assessments revealed the extent of the injury.
In an official statement, Arsenal said Saliba would begin an immediate rehabilitation programme and that surgery is not considered necessary.

"William Saliba has returned to us from World Cup duty, where he played an integral role in France reaching the semi-finals of the competition. Subsequent specialist reviews on William's return to London this week have confirmed that he has suffered a back injury which will require a period of rehabilitation. Extensive assessments have concluded that surgery is not recommended, but William should now commence a managed recovery programme."
The club added that Saliba will remain under close medical supervision throughout his recovery but did not provide a timetable for his return, only confirming that he is expected to miss an extended period.
Arsenal Have Defensive Options

Despite losing one of their key defenders, Arsenal have received some encouraging fitness updates elsewhere in the squad.
Ben White has returned to pre-season training after recovering from the knee injury that ruled him out of the UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.
Jurrien Timber is continuing his rehabilitation from a groin injury sustained before the World Cup and has indicated he hopes to return soon.
New signing Cristhian Mosquera and Riccardo Calafiori are both available during pre-season and can provide cover in central defence. Meanwhile, Piero Hincapié is expected back in training within the next week following Ecuador's World Cup exit, while Gabriel Magalhães is also due to rejoin the squad shortly.
Saliba's absence represents a significant setback for Mikel Arteta ahead of the new campaign, with the French defender having established himself as one of Arsenal's most influential players in recent seasons. The club will now rely on its defensive depth while awaiting his return.
