Tom Holland References Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in New Brand New Day Scene

A previously unseen clip from Spider-Man: Brand New Day has surfaced online, quickly drawing fans’ attention with a subtle reference to Tobey Maguire’s version of Spider-Man. The footage also confirms that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Peter Parker, portrayed by Tom Holland, still remembers his multiversal counterpart following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In the newly revealed scene, Spider-Man is seen testing his newly acquired organic webbing. Before taking action, Peter Parker attempts to calm himself by saying, “Organic webs. Peter 2 had them. He was cool.

You’re cool.” He then fires a web and swings toward the next building while letting out a loud scream.

The line is widely viewed as a direct tribute to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. More importantly, it confirms that although nearly everyone forgot Peter Parker after the ending of No Way Home, Peter himself still remembers the multiverse events and his encounters with the other Spider-Men.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker surprised both Tom Holland’s and Andrew Garfield’s versions by revealing that he never needed mechanical web-shooters. Instead, his webbing was produced naturally by his own body.

The revelation left both Holland’s Peter and Garfield’s Peter fascinated. Peter 3, played by Andrew Garfield, was especially curious, repeatedly asking how the organic webbing actually worked, while Peter 2 appeared visibly embarrassed discussing his unique ability.

During the memorable Statue of Liberty sequence before the final battle, Peter 3 continued expressing his amazement at Peter 2’s natural webbing. At first, Peter 2 assumed he was being mocked and reacted awkwardly.

Peter 3 immediately apologized, believing he had crossed a personal boundary. Peter 2 then clarified that wasn’t the case, admitting he simply couldn’t explain how it worked, comparing the process to breathing.

That exchange ultimately became one of No Way Home’s most beloved moments, blending humor with heartfelt chemistry between the three generations of Spider-Man on screen.

Brand New Day doesn’t stop at referencing Peter 2 through dialogue. The film also appears to pay tribute to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man through Tom Holland’s redesigned costume. Based on the footage released so far, the new suit features raised web patterns and a front spider emblem that closely resemble the iconic costume seen in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to arrive in U.S. theaters on July 31, 2026. The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay written by Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, and Justin Kuritzkes.

Set four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Brand New Day follows Peter Parker as he continues protecting New York City. This time, however, he finds himself facing an entirely new and mysterious threat.

While investigating the mystery, Peter’s powers undergo an unexpected transformation. The change not only grants him new abilities but also causes him to become increasingly aggressive and short-tempered, forcing him to uncover the source of the mutation while struggling to regain control of himself.

Tom Holland has remained the MCU’s Spider-Man since making his debut in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. He later headlined Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, while also appearing in several Avengers blockbusters. His youthful and relatable portrayal of Peter Parker has made him one of Marvel Studios’ most beloved leading actors.

Meanwhile, Tobey Maguire was the first actor to transform Spider-Man into a global box-office phenomenon through Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, released between 2002 and 2007. His portrayal of Peter Parker is still regarded by many fans as the definitive live-action version of the character and is widely credited with helping launch the modern superhero movie era.

Maguire’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 became one of Marvel Studios’ most memorable cinematic moments. Bringing together all three live-action Spider-Men generated massive excitement worldwide, helping the film become both a critical and commercial success while celebrating two decades of Spider-Man history.

By continuing to include subtle references to Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker, Brand New Day appears to further honor the legacy of the original Spider-Man while strengthening the multiverse connections established in No Way Home. These callbacks also reinforce the emotional continuity between the different Spider-Man franchises under Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.

Although the latest reference consists of only a brief line of dialogue and several visual costume details, it has already sparked widespread discussion among fans. Beyond confirming that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker still remembers Peter 2, the scene has fueled new speculation that characters from across the Spider-Verse could continue to play an important role in the future of the Spider-Man franchise.
