Ryan Gosling finally has an official date for his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor’s upcoming Ghost Rider movie has been scheduled by Disney for a theatrical release on July 28, 2028. It is the first specific release date announced for the project after Marvel previously confirmed that the film would arrive sometime in 2028.

The news places Gosling in a particularly important position within Marvel’s plans for the coming years. Ghost Riderwill not stand alone on the studio’s release calendar but will arrive between two other major blockbusters: X-Men, scheduled for May 5, 2028, and Black Panther 3, which is set for December 15 of the same year. Marvel will therefore have three major theatrical releases spread across 2028, pointing to an increasingly ambitious schedule for the next phase of the franchise.
Gosling was officially introduced as Marvel’s new Ghost Rider during the studio’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026. Appearing alongside Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, the actor acknowledged that Ghost Rider was a character he had wanted to play for a long time. The casting therefore carries a particularly personal dimension for the Canadian star, rather than simply being another major franchise role.
What makes the project even more interesting is that the new Ghost Rider movie reportedly originated with Gosling himself. The actor developed the idea for his version of the character, and the concept eventually won over director Shawn Levy before the pair brought it to Marvel. For a studio known for carefully controlling its major characters and storylines, having the lead actor play such a direct role in developing the project makes Gosling’s case somewhat unusual.
Shawn Levy will direct Ghost Rider. The filmmaker previously made a major impact within the Marvel universe with Deadpool & Wolverine, which brought together numerous Marvel characters while making extensive use of the multiverse concept. Levy is also working with Gosling on Star Wars: Starfighter, giving the pair another major franchise project alongside their upcoming Marvel collaboration. Jonathan Tropper is writing the Ghost Riderscreenplay, having also worked on Starfighter.

The biggest unanswered question currently concerns the identity of the Ghost Rider Gosling will portray. Marvel has not confirmed whether he will play Johnny Blaze, the most recognizable incarnation of the character, or another version from the comics. That distinction could significantly influence the direction of the movie, particularly because Ghost Rider has been portrayed through several different identities and storylines over the years.
Audiences previously saw Nicolas Cage play Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider in 2007 and its 2012 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Those films were produced before Marvel Studios had fully established the modern MCU, leaving plenty of room for the new version to take a different approach. Marvel has yet to reveal the rest of the cast, the plot or when production will officially begin.
Gosling’s casting also brings considerable expectations because Ghost Rider occupies a very different corner of the Marvel universe from many of its better-known superheroes. The character combines horror, mythology, supernatural elements and revenge with traditional superhero action. If Marvel chooses to fully explore that darker side, Ghost Ridercould introduce a distinctly different atmosphere to the MCU and potentially expand the franchise into territory it has only touched on before.
For Gosling, the role also represents a significant shift in a career built largely around carefully chosen projects. Born in Canada in 1980, he first gained public attention as a child performer on The All New Mickey Mouse Club during the 1990s. After his early television work, he gradually established himself through independent films and psychologically complex characters before becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognizable leading men.

His major breakthrough came with The Notebook in 2004. His portrayal of Noah Calhoun made Gosling a familiar face in romantic dramas and created one of the most memorable on-screen pairings of the period alongside Rachel McAdams. The success of the film helped him move beyond his early television image and establish himself as a serious film actor with considerable commercial appeal.
Gosling, however, did not build his career solely around romantic roles. He repeatedly moved toward more demanding dramatic projects, including Half Nelson, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Films such as Lars and the Real Girl, Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines further demonstrated his ability to portray characters with complicated emotional lives and very different personalities.
He subsequently entered another successful period with films including Drive, Crazy, Stupid, Love., The Ides of March, The Big Short and Blade Runner 2049. Gosling developed a reputation for maintaining the presence of a classic movie star while continuing to work on unconventional projects. With La La Land, he showed another side of his abilities, combining acting, singing and piano performance while earning another Academy Award nomination.
In 2023, Barbie introduced Gosling to an entirely new generation of viewers. Ken could easily have been treated as a straightforward comic character, but Gosling turned the role into one of the film’s most memorable performances. His musical number “I’m Just Ken” became a major cultural moment, demonstrating that he could move from intense dramatic roles to broad comedy without losing the charisma that had defined his career.

Away from the screen, Gosling’s private life has also remained a subject of public interest, particularly his long-term relationship with Eva Mendes. The two began dating after working together on The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011. Unlike many Hollywood couples, however, Gosling and Mendes have generally avoided turning their relationship into part of their public image. They rarely appear together on red carpets and have been careful about how much they share about their family.
The couple have two daughters, Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee. Mendes has spoken about how becoming a mother was not necessarily something she had envisioned before meeting Gosling, while their relationship eventually changed that perspective. The pair have continued to keep their family life relatively private, particularly when it comes to their children, while maintaining successful careers of their own.
Their relationship creates an especially interesting connection to Gosling’s new Marvel role. Mendes previously appeared in the 2007 Ghost Rider movie as Roxanne Simpson opposite Nicolas Cage’s Johnny Blaze. Her connection to the original film means Gosling’s arrival as the new Ghost Rider creates an unusual link between the two cinematic versions of the character. Mendes also reacted publicly to her partner’s casting, adding another personal layer to the franchise connection.
That history gives Ghost Rider 2028 several links to Gosling’s professional and personal life. He is entering a major superhero franchise while continuing his collaboration with Shawn Levy on Star Wars: Starfighter. At the same time, the character is directly connected to a film in which his longtime partner appeared nearly two decades ago.
Gosling has also never been an actor who frequently appears in superhero franchises. His career has largely been built around projects that allow him to experiment with different characters, genres and styles. Joining the MCU therefore represents a significant departure from much of his previous work, particularly as Marvel continues to expand its roster and reshape its larger cinematic universe.
There are still many questions surrounding the project. Marvel has not revealed whether Gosling will play Johnny Blaze or another incarnation of Ghost Rider, where the story will fit within the MCU timeline, which other characters might appear or whether his Ghost Rider could make an earlier appearance in another Marvel production. Those details are likely to remain closely guarded as development continues.
For now, the one certainty is that Ghost Rider has a release date. On July 28, 2028, Ryan Gosling is scheduled to enter the MCU in a role he has reportedly wanted for years. After building a career across independent dramas, romantic films, action movies, musicals and major blockbusters such as Barbie, Ghost Rider could become the next major chapter in Gosling’s evolution as one of Hollywood’s most versatile leading men.
