Rumer Willis shocks fans after accusing her ex of years of emotional abuse, as their custody battle exposes a series of disturbing secrets behind the scenes.

For years, Rumer Willis cultivated an image that balanced Hollywood legacy with a quieter, more grounded personal life. As the eldest daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, she grew up under relentless public scrutiny, navigating fame long before she fully entered adulthood. But now, the actress has found herself at the center of a deeply personal and emotionally charged legal battle after accusing her ex-partner Derek Richard Thomas of what she described in court filings as “insane emotional abuse” during their relationship and after their breakup. The allegations emerged amid an ongoing custody fight over their three-year-old daughter, Louetta, exposing an increasingly bitter conflict behind what once appeared to be one of Hollywood’s more low-key relationships.

According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Willis and Thomas have been locked in a custody dispute since last July, when Thomas first filed for an order regarding child custody and visitation. In response, Willis submitted a declaration opposing his request, alleging that Thomas displayed a “persistent pattern” of emotional abuse that began before their separation in 2024 and continued afterward. The actress claimed the alleged behavior frequently occurred in front of their daughter or while the child was “trapped in the car with him.”

The filings paint a picture of a relationship that Willis says became emotionally exhausting and psychologically destabilizing over time. In her declaration, she alleged that Thomas engaged in “ongoing coercive control through prolonged circular verbal attacks that he is unable or unwilling to stop.” According to Willis, these confrontations sometimes lasted “over six hours at a time on what became a daily basis.” She further claimed that Thomas’ behavior became increasingly “erratic and bizarre” following the birth of their daughter in April 2023.

“I was constantly trying to keep the peace and walk on eggshells,” Willis stated in the filing. “He wanted to isolate me from my friends and family. He constantly called me a liar with no reason behind it. He told me I was a bad girlfriend all the time.”

The actress also accused Thomas of displaying what she described as “paranoid behavior,” alleging that he believed she and her mother, Demi Moore, were “plotting” to take Louetta away from him. “For a long time, it was difficult for me to stand up to [Thomas] as I tried to avoid his emotional tirades and abuse even for a long time after he moved out,” Willis claimed.

At the center of the legal conflict is not only the deterioration of their romantic relationship but also the emotional wellbeing of their daughter. Willis alleged in her declaration that Thomas’ conduct has left Louetta “traumatized” and “crying a lot.” Because of those concerns, she requested primary physical custody and argued that Thomas should not be granted overnight visitation without a formal child custody evaluation under California’s Evidence Code Section 730.

Willis also raised concerns regarding Thomas’ now-fiancée, Lizzie Loch, claiming she did not feel comfortable with Loch being present during custodial visits due to what she described as Thomas’ “history of fighting in relationships, and in front of the child.” The accusation further intensified the already tense public narrative surrounding the custody battle.

Thomas strongly denied the allegations in his own declaration filed with the court. He argued that Willis’ legal actions stemmed from resentment over their daughter’s relationship with Loch and insisted that while the relationship between himself and Willis had become unhealthy, it was not abusive. “I have committed no acts of domestic violence in any form, including any active coercive control,” he stated. “[Our] relationship was unhealthy and appropriately came to an end, but it was not all characterized by any violence, physical or emotional attacks or intimidation on my part.”

He continued by emphasizing that the decision to end their relationship had been mutual. “The decision to end the relationship between myself and [Rumer] was a mutual decision made in our mutual best interests,” Thomas wrote in the filing.

Another contentious issue in the court dispute revolves around allegations involving substance use. Willis requested that Thomas undergo court-ordered drug testing due to what she described as his alleged “chronic daily marijuana use and evidence of behavior indicative of someone under the influence of drugs for extended periods of time.” Thomas denied currently using marijuana, though he admitted he had previously used it legally.

“I am not a current user of marijuana,” Thomas stated, while also insisting that any past use never interfered with his responsibilities as a father. He maintained that Louetta had “never suffered for any want in my care” and had never experienced neglect or abuse while with him.

Willis, however, included several incidents in her declaration that she claimed raised concerns about Thomas’ judgment while caring for their daughter. In one allegation, she claimed he became so intoxicated that he could not properly watch Louetta “for those couple of minutes without her rolling off the couch.” She also alleged that he once allowed the child to fall off a bed in November 2023 and then focused more on her reaction than comforting the child afterward.

One of the more controversial accusations involved bathing boundaries. Willis claimed she asked Thomas not to bathe naked with Louetta, describing it as “highly inappropriate” considering the child’s age. Thomas rejected all implications of misconduct and argued that Willis had failed to provide “a single credible instance of any mistreatment or neglect.”

The legal battle has become even more emotionally complicated due to the ongoing health crisis involving Willis’ father, Bruce Willis. The actor, one of Hollywood’s most recognizable action stars, was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia after previously stepping away from acting following an aphasia diagnosis. In her filing, Rumer alleged that Thomas created “high stress and chaos” during moments when she was trying to spend time with her “extremely ill” father.

The situation places Rumer Willis in an unusually vulnerable position publicly. For much of her adult life, she has carefully balanced being the daughter of two global superstars while also attempting to establish an independent identity within Hollywood. Unlike many celebrity children who leaned heavily into influencer culture or tabloid fame, Willis spent years building a career through smaller acting roles, television appearances, and independent films.

Born in 1988 during the height of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s celebrity power, Rumer Glenn Willis grew up in one of Hollywood’s most famous families. Her childhood unfolded under constant media attention, particularly during the 1990s when her parents were among the industry’s highest-paid stars. Even after Bruce and Demi divorced in 2000, they remained unusually close publicly, creating a modern blended-family dynamic that later became admired by fans.

That family unity became especially visible during Bruce Willis’ health decline. Over the past several years, Rumer and her sisters — Scout and Tallulah Willis — have regularly shared emotional tributes to their father online while Demi Moore remained closely involved in the family’s support system despite her divorce from Bruce decades earlier. The family’s openness regarding his dementia diagnosis generated widespread sympathy and praise for their honesty.

For Rumer, however, growing up in such a visible household was not always easy. Throughout her teens and early twenties, she frequently became the target of online criticism about her appearance and public persona. In later interviews, she openly discussed struggling with self-esteem and feeling overshadowed by both her parents’ fame and Hollywood beauty standards.

Her acting career developed gradually rather than explosively. She appeared in films like Hostage alongside Bruce Willis, The House Bunny, Sorority Row, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, while also building a television résumé through projects such as Empire and 90210. Though she never achieved the blockbuster superstardom associated with her parents, she steadily developed respect as a working actress capable of navigating both mainstream and indie projects.

Outside acting, Willis experienced one of her biggest mainstream breakthroughs after winning Dancing with the Stars in 2015. The victory significantly shifted public perception of her, allowing audiences to see a more confident and charismatic side of her personality beyond the tabloid narratives that had followed her for years. The show also marked a turning point in how she spoke publicly about body image, self-worth, and personal healing.

Her relationship with Derek Richard Thomas initially appeared to represent a more stable chapter in her life. The couple went public with their romance in 2022 and later announced they were expecting their first child together. In April 2023, they welcomed daughter Louetta Isley Thomas Willis. At the time, Willis frequently shared affectionate glimpses into motherhood on social media and described the experience as transformative.

Friends and fans alike viewed the relationship as relatively private and grounded compared to many celebrity romances. Thomas, a musician, largely stayed outside traditional Hollywood celebrity culture, which seemed to align with Willis’ preference for a quieter personal life away from constant tabloid attention. That is part of why the intensity of the current allegations has surprised many observers.

Willis confirmed their separation publicly in August 2024, though she initially avoided discussing specific details surrounding the breakup. The newly released court documents now suggest the emotional tension within the relationship had existed long before the separation became public knowledge.

The legal filings also introduced financial tension into the dispute. Willis alleged that Thomas had not provided “any support” and instead expected her “wealthy family to take care of everything.” She pushed back against assumptions regarding her financial privilege by insisting she does not rely on Bruce Willis or Demi Moore to fund her personal expenses and claimed the legal battle itself was creating severe financial pressure due to attorney fees.

Demi Moore herself became directly involved in the case through a declaration supporting her daughter’s claims. Moore alleged she personally witnessed Thomas behaving aggressively during the home birth of Louetta. “[Thomas] had no consideration to Rumer, the baby, the process or anyone else for that matter,” Moore claimed. “He essentially ruined what should’ve been one of the happiest moments of [Rumer’s] life.”

The involvement of Moore added another layer of public fascination to the case because of the actress’ own complicated history in the spotlight. Over the years, Demi Moore has spoken candidly about addiction, relationships, motherhood, and fame in ways that reshaped public understanding of her personal struggles. Her strong support for Rumer now reinforces the image of the Willis-Moore family as unusually united despite decades of public scrutiny.

Thomas’ legal team has firmly rejected the accusations. In a statement to PEOPLE, attorney Mike Kretzmer said: “We intend to try this case in the court and not in the press. Mr. Thomas is a devoted, loving caring father to Louetta. It is most unfortunate to put it mildly that Miss Willis is actively obstructing Mr. Thomas’s relationship with his daughter.”

The attorney continued by accusing Willis of making “many inaccurate and false statements” regarding Thomas’ behavior, drug use, and parenting. “We deny each and all of these allegations made against Mr. Thomas and we look forward to presenting truthful accurate information to the court in the near future.”

As the custody battle continues, the case has become another example of how celebrity family disputes increasingly unfold both inside legal systems and across public opinion online. Every filing, statement, and allegation now moves instantly through entertainment media and social platforms, making deeply personal conflicts part of broader public discourse.

For Rumer Willis, the situation represents a difficult collision between private motherhood and public celebrity identity. Over the years, she has repeatedly tried to define herself beyond simply being “Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s daughter.” Yet in moments of personal crisis, the gravity of her family legacy inevitably returns to the center of public conversation.

At the same time, the case also highlights the increasingly complex conversations surrounding emotional abuse, coercive control, custody battles, and mental wellbeing within modern relationships. Allegations of emotional manipulation are often harder to legally define than physical abuse, yet they can deeply influence both family dynamics and public perception.

Whether the court ultimately sides with Willis or Thomas, the dispute has already transformed how the public views what once appeared to be a relatively private romance. What began as a seemingly low-profile relationship between an actress navigating motherhood and a musician outside the Hollywood machine has evolved into one of the more emotionally charged celebrity custody battles of the year.

For now, both sides appear prepared for a prolonged legal fight. But behind the legal filings, public statements, and headlines remains a far more personal reality: two former partners locked in conflict while attempting to shape the future of a young child growing up under the glare of extraordinary public attention.
