Prince Harry Faces Renewed Private Jet Controversy as Travalyst Appoints New Director: An Environmental Mission Under Continued Scrutiny

Prince Harry has once again found himself in the spotlight after Travalyst, the sustainable travel organization he founded, appointed a new director. The appointment has drawn particular attention because the chosen candidate, Graham Miller, is a well-known expert in sustainable tourism who has repeatedly expressed strong views against frequent air travel. His past remarks have quickly revived memories of the long-running criticism surrounding the Duke of Sussex’s own use of private jets.

Prince Harry launched Travalyst in 2019 with the goal of encouraging a more environmentally responsible tourism industry. The initiative brings together major companies from the travel, hospitality, and technology sectors to provide travelers with transparent information that helps them make more climate-conscious choices.
From the moment it was introduced, Travalyst was regarded as one of Harry’s most significant initiatives as he increasingly focused on environmental protection and climate change. However, the project soon attracted criticism after Harry and Meghan Markle faced repeated backlash for using private jets during several personal trips.
According to reports at the time, Harry and Meghan took four private jet flights within just 11 days in 2019. The trips led many to question whether their environmental advocacy aligned with their personal lifestyle. Critics accused the couple of hypocrisy for encouraging people to reduce carbon emissions while choosing one of the most carbon-intensive forms of transportation.
Responding to the criticism, Prince Harry acknowledged that no one is perfect. He said, “No one is perfect,” adding, “We can all do better.” His remarks were widely interpreted as an admission that he, too, had room to improve in his pursuit of a more sustainable lifestyle.
However, the appointment of Graham Miller as Travalyst’s new director has once again brought those controversies back into public discussion. While serving as a lecturer at the University of Surrey in 2020, Miller voiced particularly strong opinions about frequent flying. He said: “There was a time when mentioning on a Monday that you’d just flown back from Milan or New York made you sound sophisticated. Now it’s like boasting that you drank five pints and drove home.”

By comparing frequent flying to drink-driving, Graham Miller attracted considerable attention. As a result, his appointment is expected to place additional pressure on both Travalyst and Prince Harry, whose environmental advocacy has long been overshadowed by criticism over his own air travel.
The criticism directed at Harry did not end in 2019. In August of that year, he was again criticized after flying by private jet to Nice to stay with Sir Elton John. Harry defended the decision by saying: “Occasionally there needs to be an opportunity based on a unique circumstance to ensure that my family are safe.” According to the Duke, exceptional security concerns sometimes required his family to travel by private aircraft.
Three years later, during a speech at the United Nations, Prince Harry once again emphasized the urgency of climate action, stating that climate change was “wreaking havoc on our planet.” Although the speech received widespread attention, it also prompted renewed criticism from those who argued that his message would be more convincing if it were accompanied by significant changes in his own travel habits.

In 2023, Harry and Meghan once again attracted media attention after taking a 40-minute flight from an airstrip near their California home to attend Katy Perry’s concert in Las Vegas. Later that same year, the couple reportedly flew approximately 2,000 miles from New Jersey to the exclusive Caribbean island of Canouan aboard a Falcon 7X private jet before continuing on the same aircraft to Atlanta, Georgia. Those trips reignited public debate over whether their environmental message is consistent with their personal lifestyle.
Environmental protection has long been one of Prince Harry’s core philanthropic priorities. In addition to Travalyst, he has supported numerous initiatives focused on nature conservation, carbon reduction, and sustainable development. After stepping down as senior working members of the British royal family in 2020, Harry and Meghan continued many of these efforts through the Archewell Foundation, which promotes projects related to mental health, social equality, education, and environmental issues.
Since relocating to Montecito, California, however, Harry and Meghan’s public life has continued to generate debate. Alongside their business ventures, including partnerships with Netflix and, previously, Spotify, the couple have frequently faced questions about whether their public messaging aligns with their personal lifestyle—particularly regarding environmental issues.
Harry’s memoir Spare, published in 2023, further fueled global discussion about his public image. In the bestselling book, the Duke detailed his fractured relationships with King Charles III, Prince William, and other members of the Royal Family. While the memoir broke sales records, it also deepened public discussion surrounding his ongoing family tensions.
Meanwhile, Meghan Markle has continued expanding her media, business, and lifestyle ventures. Nearly every new project she undertakes attracts significant public attention, with many observers continuing to compare the couple’s personal decisions to the values they publicly promote.

Many experts believe Graham Miller’s appointment could lead Travalyst toward an even more ambitious approach to sustainable tourism standards. Given his extensive research into aviation’s environmental impact, he is expected to strengthen the organization’s credibility within the industry.
Nevertheless, Miller’s arrival has inevitably revived Prince Harry’s past controversies. With Travalyst’s new leader having once compared boasting about frequent flights to boasting about drink-driving, Harry and Meghan’s future travel choices are likely to remain under close public scrutiny. For a public figure whose reputation has become closely associated with environmental advocacy, personal decisions will continue to play a significant role in determining the credibility of the message he seeks to promote.
