Patrick Muldoon, known for his roles in Days of Our Lives and Melrose Place, has died at the age of 57, with official documents revealing that his cause of death was a myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack.

According to his death certificate, additional contributing medical conditions included pulmonary embolism and hereditary coagulopathy, a genetic disorder affecting the body’s ability to form blood clots. A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery in the lungs, a condition that can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.

His remains were cremated several days after his passing, and official records list his profession as both actor and producer, reflecting a career that spanned decades across television and film.

Muldoon’s death occurred suddenly on April 19, and was initially confirmed by his manager in a statement to Variety, which described the loss as unexpected. Reports at the time indicated that he had suffered a heart attack.

Just days before his passing, Muldoon had shared a post on social media expressing excitement about his involvement in a new project titled Kockroach, a crime thriller featuring Chris Hemsworth, Taron Egerton, Zazie Beetz, and Alec Baldwin. He was credited as an executive producer on the film.

In his post, he wrote: “So excited to be a part of this amazing project KOCKROACH directed by Matt Ross starring Chris Hemsworth, Taron Edgerton, Zazzie Beetz and Alec Baldwin.”

The news of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and former co-stars. Among them, Alison Sweeney, who worked with him on Days of Our Lives, described him as a rare talent and a deeply kind individual.

“Pat was a rare kind of person—brilliantly talented, endlessly kind, and generous in spirit,” she wrote. “I was so lucky to have worked with him when I first started at Days, he made me feel at ease right away. He brought his unique charm and humor to work every day. A truly gifted guy, and one who will be profoundly missed.”

Another former co-star, Lisa Rinna, who played his on-screen sister, shared a simple tribute on social media, posting a photo of the two together accompanied by a broken-heart emoji.

Muldoon first rose to prominence through his role as Austin Reed on Days of Our Lives, which he played from 1992 to 1995. He later returned to the role in 2011 after a long hiatus, marking one of several comebacks that defined his enduring connection to the soap opera world.

Beyond daytime television, he also gained recognition for his role as Richard Hart in Melrose Place, where he appeared for multiple seasons until 1996. His career also included a guest appearance on Saved by the Bell and a notable role in the cult science fiction film Starship Troopers (1997), where he played Zander Barcalow.

Throughout his career, Muldoon was known for transitioning between television and film, often taking on roles that showcased his versatility as both a dramatic and genre actor. His early work in soap operas helped establish him as a familiar face in American television during the 1990s.

In addition to acting, he expanded his professional scope into producing, a shift that reflected a broader trend among established television actors seeking creative control behind the camera. His involvement in Kockroach marked one of his more recent contributions to the film industry.

His final public social media activity, focused on his excitement for the upcoming project, now carries added poignancy in light of his sudden passing. Colleagues have since reflected on his continued enthusiasm for work and his collaborative spirit on set.

Muldoon’s personal life was relatively private compared to many of his contemporaries in Hollywood. He is survived by his partner, Miriam Rothbart, as well as his parents, his sister and brother-in-law Shana Zappa and Ahmet Zappa, and his niece and nephew.

Those who worked closely with him have described him as approachable and supportive, particularly toward younger actors entering the industry. His long tenure in daytime television placed him within a close-knit professional community, where many colleagues maintained relationships long after filming ended.

During his time on Days of Our Lives, Muldoon became part of one of the most recognizable ensembles in American soap opera history. His character Austin Reed was central to several major storylines, helping define a significant era of the show in the 1990s.

His return to the series in 2011 was met with enthusiasm from long-time viewers, reflecting the lasting impact of his early performances. The revival also underscored the enduring popularity of legacy characters in long-running soap operas.

On Melrose Place, his portrayal of Richard Hart contributed to the series’ reputation for dramatic, often high-stakes storytelling. The show itself became a cultural touchstone of 1990s television, known for its interconnected character arcs and serialized structure.

Outside of television, his role in Starship Troopers introduced him to a wider international audience. The film later developed a cult following, further solidifying his presence in genre cinema.

In the years leading up to his death, Muldoon remained active in the entertainment industry, balancing acting roles with production work and occasional public appearances at fan conventions and industry events.

Tributes following his death have emphasized not only his professional achievements but also his reputation for kindness and professionalism on set. Many colleagues have highlighted his ability to create a welcoming atmosphere, particularly for younger cast members.

His sudden passing at 57 has prompted renewed reflection on his body of work, particularly his contributions to 1990s television culture. For many fans, his performances remain closely associated with a defining era of daytime and primetime drama.

While investigations into his medical condition have clarified the cause of death, those who knew him continue to focus on his legacy as a performer and collaborator. His career, spanning more than three decades, reflects the evolution of American television from soap operas to streaming-era productions.

In remembering him, colleagues and audiences alike have pointed to a career marked by consistency, adaptability, and an enduring connection to the shows and characters that shaped his public identity.
