After years of remaining largely silent about one of the most scrutinized periods of her career, Olivia Wilde has opened up about her relationship with Harry Styles and the intense pressure she faced amid the media frenzy surrounding Don’t Worry Darling. According to the actress and filmmaker, what affected her most was not the criticism itself, but being instructed to remain silent instead of defending herself.

In a new interview with The Cut, Wilde reflected on the months leading up to and following the release of Don’t Worry Darling in 2022. She recalled that nearly every press appearance became less about the film and more about speculation surrounding her personal life.
“I was told, ‘Don’t say a f—ing word. Just go out there and smile.’ I resent that,” Wilde said. “But it taught me it’s not the way I want to handle things.”
Wilde’s relationship with Harry Styles began after she cast the singer as the lead in the psychological thriller. Their romance quickly became international headline news, often overshadowing the film itself. Although the couple publicly confirmed their relationship, they went their separate ways just two months after Don’t Worry Darling premiered in theaters in late 2022.

Throughout the film’s promotional campaign, Wilde found herself at the center of constant controversy. Some questioned the real reason behind Shia LaBeouf’s departure from the project, while others speculated about an alleged feud between Wilde and the film’s leading actress, Florence Pugh. At the same time, her romance with Styles became the dominant topic across entertainment media and social platforms.
Looking back, Wilde explained that what lingered with her was not the criticism over the couple’s ten-year age gap, nor the highly publicized moment when she was served legal custody papers from Jason Sudeikis during a Don’t Worry Darling presentation. Instead, it was the feeling of constantly being misunderstood.
“I deeply hate the feeling of being misunderstood,” she admitted.
Only recently, during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Wilde began speaking more openly about the relationship, which started in 2021 after Styles replaced Shia LaBeouf in the film and ended in November 2022. She acknowledged that she still struggles to fully understand why their romance provoked such an extraordinary public reaction.
“It was crazy. I don’t know how much I understand it yet. I know that it has existed for a long time in our society. I understand it had very little to do with me.”

She also questioned why women continue to receive disproportionate public scrutiny.
“It is something that… We’ve done this to women for a long time. Why is it? I don’t know. People were f—ing pissed.”
At the height of the relationship, Harry Styles also admitted that he found the level of public attention difficult to comprehend. Referring to social media platform X, he described it as “a shitstorm of people trying to be awful to people.”
He recalled:
“Can you imagine going on a second date with someone and being like, ‘Okay, there’s this corner of the thing, and they’re going to say this, and it’s going to be really crazy, and they’re going to be really mean, and it’s not real… But anyway, what do you want to eat?’”
Wilde and Styles first became romantically involved in early 2021, shortly after the singer replaced Shia LaBeouf as the film’s leading man. The couple was frequently photographed together at public events, vacations, and concerts before ending their relationship in November 2022. Although neither has publicly discussed the exact reason for the breakup, reports at the time suggested that demanding work schedules and long periods apart ultimately led them to part ways amicably.
Born in 1984, Olivia Wilde has built a successful career as an actress, director, producer, and writer. She first gained widespread recognition for her role in the television drama House before making a successful transition behind the camera with Booksmart (2019). Her directorial debut received widespread critical acclaim and established her as one of Hollywood’s most promising filmmakers. Following Don’t Worry Darling, Wilde returned to directing with her third feature, The Invite, marking a new chapter after years in which public controversy often overshadowed her creative work.

Her personal life has long attracted media attention as well. Wilde was married to filmmaker Tao Ruspoli from 2003 until their divorce in 2011. She later entered a long-term relationship with actor and comedian Jason Sudeikis. The couple became engaged in 2013 and welcomed two children before separating in 2020. Their custody dispute received significant media coverage, particularly after Wilde was unexpectedly served legal papers onstage during CinemaCon. Despite the difficult circumstances, she has since emphasized that their relationship has improved.
“We’re better as friends and co-parents,” Wilde previously said.
After years of seeing her private life dominate headlines more than her professional achievements, Wilde now says she no longer believes silence is the best response. Her latest reflections offer one of her most candid accounts yet of one of the most turbulent periods of her life, while reinforcing her hope that audiences will focus more on her filmmaking than on the personal controversies that have followed her for years.
