New Details Emerge in Kaylee Hottle’s Fatal Car Crash Investigation: Driver Was Not Under the Influence of Alcohol

Three days after the tragic car crash that claimed the life of young actress Kaylee Hottle, authorities in Maryland have released new findings from their ongoing investigation. According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, alcohol has been ruled out as a contributing factor in the accident, while investigators continue working to determine the remaining circumstances, including pending toxicology results for the driver.

Kaylee Hottle, the rising actress best known for portraying Jia in the Godzilla vs. Kong franchise, was a passenger in a 1995 Honda Accord that crashed on July 21. The vehicle reportedly veered off the roadway before plunging into a roadside ditch. Local law enforcement has indicated that excessive speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the devastating crash.

The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that Hottle died from multiple blunt force injuries, with her death officially ruled an accident. The autopsy was completed on the morning of July 22, and investigators have found no evidence suggesting foul play.

In the latest update, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the unnamed 19-year-old driver was not impaired by alcohol at the time of the collision. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while another passenger in the vehicle did not require medical treatment at the scene.

Authorities noted, however, that toxicology results related to possible drug impairment have not yet been released. As a result, investigators have not determined whether the driver will face any criminal charges. Officials emphasized that the investigation remains active, and no additional conclusions have been announced.

Photographs taken at the crash site reveal the severity of the impact. The Honda Accord’s front end was almost completely destroyed, with the hood crushed, the front bumper heavily mangled, and the wheels caked in mud and grass after the vehicle left the roadway and entered the ditch.

Kaylee’s father, Joshua Hottle, shared the heartbreaking news in a Facebook livestream titled “I am taking a flight that I never would like to take.” Communicating through American Sign Language (ASL), Joshua explained that he was traveling from Texas to Maryland to bring his daughter’s body home.

He revealed that he first received a call informing him of the accident before learning shortly afterward that Kaylee’s heart had stopped while she was being transported to the hospital. His emotional message resonated deeply within both the Deaf community and fans who had followed Kaylee’s promising career.

The Texas School for the Deaf, where Kaylee was preparing to begin her senior year, also issued a statement mourning her passing.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that one of our TSD seniors, Kaylee Hottle, tragically passed away yesterday in a car accident in Frederick, Maryland.”

The school extended its condolences to Kaylee’s family, friends, classmates, and loved ones while urging the public to respect the family’s privacy and refrain from speculating about the circumstances surrounding the accident. Counseling and support services have also been made available to students and staff affected by the tragedy.

Born into an all-Deaf family, Kaylee Hottle grew up using American Sign Language as her first language. From an early age, she became passionate about increasing authentic representation of Deaf people in film and television, a mission that ultimately shaped her acting career.

She rose to international recognition as Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) before reprising the role in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). Jia, a young Deaf girl who shares a unique emotional bond with Kong through sign language, quickly became one of the franchise’s most beloved characters.

Speaking with The Daily Moth in 2021, Kaylee reflected on the relationship between Jia and Kong.

“Because Kong and my character had a special bond. We signed with each other.”

She also described the challenges of adapting a traditionally written screenplay into American Sign Language, a process that required assistance from her parents and another ASL consultant.

“I was fine with memorizing the script and signing my lines, but the tough part was signing out the ‘spoken’ parts because we had to change it, and sometimes they’d tell us it was wrong but they didn’t understand that ASL changes almost everything.”

Kaylee recalled one particular misunderstanding that temporarily delayed filming.

“There was one instance where there was a misunderstanding between us related to the ASL translation, which caused a delay, but they later understood.”

Beyond performing her own scenes, Kaylee also helped teach her fellow cast members how to communicate using ASL.

“Teaching the cast how to sign. They had never interacted with a deaf person before. I had to explain how to sign and use facial expressions… They were very accommodating. Some of the workers learned how to sign.”

Her co-star Alexander Skarsgård was among those who learned ASL so they could communicate off camera. Speaking in 2021, he praised the young actress’s remarkable talent and professionalism.

“Kaylee steals the movie.”

Skarsgård marveled at how naturally she adapted to filmmaking despite it being her first feature film, noting her exceptional ability to absorb direction and convey emotion through subtle facial expressions.

In addition to the Godzilla films, Kaylee appeared in an episode of Magnum P.I., starred in commercials for Glide and Convo Relay, and participated in the awareness project 10 Deaf Children: One Powerful Message, which highlighted the experiences of Deaf children and promoted sign language accessibility. Outside of acting, she was also an accomplished member of her school’s track and field team.

Despite entering Hollywood at a young age, Kaylee Hottle maintained an unblemished public image throughout her career. She was never involved in scandals or public controversies, instead earning admiration for her professionalism, warmth, and commitment to authentic Deaf representation in entertainment. Her sudden passing not only ends the career of one of Hollywood’s most promising young Deaf performers but also leaves a lasting void within the Deaf community and among audiences around the world. As investigators continue piecing together the final moments leading up to the crash, many hope the completed investigation will provide answers to a tragedy that has cut short an extraordinary life and career.
