Matt Damon Opens Up About the Most Extreme Transformation of His Career for The Odyssey

Matt Damon has opened up in detail for the first time about the grueling physical transformation he underwent to portray the legendary Greek hero Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The actor revealed that the six-month journey not only reshaped his body but also took over nearly every aspect of his daily life.

Released on July 17, The Odyssey quickly dominated the global box office with an estimated $264 million opening weekend, marking the biggest debut of Christopher Nolan’s directing career. In the film, Damon stars as Odysseus, the legendary hero of Greek mythology who spends another ten years struggling to return home after the end of the Trojan War.

Appearing on Live with Kelly and Mark, the 55-year-old actor revealed that Nolan had a very specific vision for the character’s appearance. According to Damon, the director didn’t want him to look like a bodybuilder but rather like a battle-hardened warrior whose strength had been forged through years of combat.

Recalling Nolan’s instructions, Damon said: “He said, ‘I just want him to look lean and strong like somebody who’s a veteran of the Trojan War and can handle himself, but wouldn’t pass up a meal if it was offered to him.’”

Damon admitted that this was one of the most difficult physiques he had ever tried to achieve for a role. “And that’s kind of the hardest shape to get into, you know, that kind of lean-strong thing. But it just kind of took over my life.”

To meet Nolan’s expectations, Damon followed an intense six-month training and nutrition program that resembled the routine of a professional athlete. Earlier this year, while appearing on Travis and Jason Kelce’s New Heights podcast, he revealed that he had slimmed down to the weight he maintained in high school.

“I used to walk around between 185 and 200 pounds. And I did that whole movie at 167 pounds.”

Speaking further during the television interview, Damon explained that his entire lifestyle revolved around maintaining the required physique. “It felt more like an athlete’s regimen, kind of like those guys who have to just dedicate every moment of their day to thinking about everything.”

In addition to his demanding workouts, the Good Will Hunting star adopted a strict gluten-free diet. Every meal was carefully planned, with ingredients and portions precisely measured to ensure he stayed on track.

“Everything’s weighed. It’s just very, very intentional about everything.”

Damon admitted that he had never realized how many everyday foods contain gluten. Although he could still enjoy foods like rice and potatoes, he had to give up many favorites—especially beer.

“Listen, I had to give up beer. That was tough.” When Kelly Ripa asked whether beer contains gluten, Damon laughed and replied, “There sure is.”

His strict diet even affected family time. While filming in Italy, his wife Luciana and their four daughters—Alexia, Isabella, Gia and Stella—came to visit. Damon recalled that he had promised to eat pasta with them, only to change his mind moments after ordering.

“I promised them I was gonna have pasta with them, and right after I ordered it, I just called the waiter back, and I was like, ‘I’ll just please have a steak instead.’” His children immediately protested, saying, “But you promised!” In the end, Damon simply took one bite of each of their pasta dishes before returning to his strict eating plan. “I was just in it… it was gonna be four or five more months. It’s all or nothing at this point.”

Perhaps most surprisingly, Damon decided to continue following a gluten-free diet even after production wrapped. He explained that he simply felt healthier. “I just felt so much better.”

This was far from the first time Damon transformed his body for a role. In 1996, he lost between 40 and 50 pounds in just 100 days for Courage Under Fire, portraying a Persian Gulf War veteran struggling with addiction and trauma.

However, that experience came with serious health consequences. Damon later revealed that a doctor warned he might have permanently damaged his heart. “I went too far.” He recalled suffering from dizziness, hot flashes, and extreme exhaustion while continuing to film because he feared shutting down production.

On the other hand, gaining around 30 pounds for the 2009 film The Informant! proved to be a much more enjoyable experience. “It was very, very easy to gain the weight. Very, very fun. I just basically ate everything I could see for a few months.”

Now in his fifties, Damon says he is no longer willing to risk his health through extreme body transformations. Speaking to People, he explained: “I didn’t change it in an unhealthy way. I think if I had done the opposite and put weight on, that would have been dangerous and it’s not something I’ll do anymore.”

Beyond losing weight, Damon also grew a full beard for nearly a year to portray Odysseus. He revealed that Christopher Nolan refused to use a fake beard because the character performs numerous scenes in the water. According to Damon, the director believed growing a real beard was the only practical solution to maintain authenticity throughout filming.

The actor joked that his thick beard made his children compare him to “Santa Claus.” For Nolan, however, it reflected his long-standing commitment to practical filmmaking. The Oscar-winning director is known for minimizing CGI in favor of real locations, practical effects, and large-scale sets whenever possible.

Damon also praised his longtime collaborator following their previous work together on Interstellar, Oppenheimer, and now The Odyssey. “It’s amazing working with him. He’s a great actor’s director.” He explained that Nolan assembles elite filmmaking crews and insists on capturing as much as possible in-camera. “If you see a thousand people in a battle, there were a thousand people there. If there are ships in the background of a shot, those are real ships.”

The actor also recalled the moment Nolan offered him the lead role. After spending about 15 minutes catching up, the director unexpectedly told Damon he wanted him to play the film’s central character. When Nolan asked whether he wanted to hear the pitch first, Damon simply replied, “Sure.” Nolan smiled and said just two words: “The Odyssey.” Damon remembered, “My heart skipped a beat. It’s an incredible part to play for an actor. The role of a lifetime.”

Born in 1970, Matt Damon has remained one of Hollywood’s leading stars for more than three decades. He first rose to international fame with Good Will Hunting, which earned him and longtime friend Ben Affleck the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He later cemented his reputation through acclaimed performances in the Jason Bourne franchise, The Martian, Ford v Ferrari, Air, Interstellar, Oppenheimer, and now The Odyssey. Away from the spotlight, Damon is widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most private celebrities. He has been married to Luciana Barroso since 2005, and together they have built a stable family life with their four daughters. While he has repeatedly transformed his body for the sake of his craft, the actor now insists that protecting his health will always come first in future projects.
