Mark Wahlberg has drawn widespread attention following the release of the trailer for his upcoming mafia film By Any Means, in which the actor appears in a dramatically altered form to portray real-life mob hitman Gregory Scarpa. The transformation has quickly become a talking point among fans, many of whom noted how difficult it is to immediately recognize the Hollywood star.
In the newly released trailer, Wahlberg retains his well-known physical build, but his facial appearance has been significantly altered through the use of prosthetics. A prosthetic nose, a reshaped jawline effect, and a bulky dark wig with retro-style sideburns contribute to a striking visual departure from his usual look.

The actor also appears in multiple wardrobe variations reflecting the 1960s setting of the film. Among the most notable is a white tank top paired with a gold chain, a look that fans say offers one of the few subtle hints of recognition beneath the heavy character design.
Wahlberg, 55, portrays Gregory Scarpa, a figure known in history as both “the Grim Reaper” and “the Mad Hatter,” reflecting the complexity and notoriety of his real-life reputation. The character’s portrayal in the film leans heavily into the tension between criminal power and undercover operations during a turbulent era in American history.
The crime thriller follows a Black FBI agent, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who investigates the murders of prominent civil rights figures. His path eventually intersects with Scarpa, portrayed by Wahlberg, leading to a narrative that explores moral ambiguity, justice, and revenge.
Set in 1960s Mississippi, the film is inspired by true events and was shot in Atlanta, Georgia. According to the storyline, the investigation gradually becomes more complicated as the line between law enforcement and criminal activity begins to blur.

Wahlberg himself described the project as a significant one, sharing his enthusiasm when introducing the trailer. “Excited to share the trailer for my new film BY ANY MEANS, based on a true story,” he wrote on Facebook, also confirming that the film is scheduled for theatrical release in September.
Following the trailer’s release, viewers quickly reacted online, with many commenting on both the film’s premise and Wahlberg’s transformation. Some expressed excitement about the project’s intensity and historical backdrop, while others focused on how unrecognizable the actor appears in the role.
One viewer wrote, “Consider me officially ‘booked and busy’ the second this hits theaters,” reflecting strong anticipation for the film’s release. Another commented, “going all Al Capone on this one! I’m In!” highlighting the character’s old-school mafia aesthetic. A third viewer questioned the prosthetic design more directly, writing, “Why the nose? I cant unsee it.”
Wahlberg’s transformation places him among a growing number of actors who have undergone significant physical changes for roles in recent years. The trend has become increasingly common in Hollywood, particularly in historical dramas and crime films that require strong visual authenticity.

Earlier in the year, Johnny Depp drew attention for his transformation while filming Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol in London. Similarly, David Duchovny was seen in an unexpected look while working on Soapbox, and Jonah Hill appeared noticeably different on set for Cut Off, alongside Kirsten Wiig.
These transformations reflect a broader industry pattern in which actors increasingly adopt extreme physical changes to fully inhabit their characters. For Wahlberg, the role of Gregory Scarpa represents one of his most visually distinct performances in recent years.
In addition to his transformation, the film itself has generated interest due to its narrative focus on civil rights-era investigations and its exploration of blurred moral boundaries. The pairing of Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has also been highlighted as a key dynamic in the film’s storytelling approach.
As anticipation builds ahead of its September release, By Any Means is already positioning itself as a gritty crime thriller grounded in historical inspiration. The trailer’s release has not only showcased the film’s tone but also reaffirmed Wahlberg’s willingness to undergo major transformations for demanding roles.

For now, fans continue to dissect the trailer frame by frame, with much of the conversation centered on how completely the actor has been reinvented for the screen. Whether through prosthetics, costume design, or performance style, Wahlberg’s portrayal of Gregory Scarpa is already proving to be one of the most visually striking roles of his recent career.
