Mark Ruffalo has once again found himself in the spotlight after publicly sharing his political views on social media, this time celebrating Abdul El-Sayed’s victory in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary. The Marvel star has long been recognized as one of Hollywood’s most outspoken voices on political and social issues, and he described El-Sayed’s win as an important milestone for the progressive movement he has supported for years.

Shortly after the election results were announced, Ruffalo took to Bluesky to congratulate El-Sayed for defeating Congresswoman Haley Stevens, who had received support from many of the Democratic Party’s top leaders. In Ruffalo’s view, the candidate he endorsed had overcome significant obstacles throughout the campaign.
The actor argued that El-Sayed was not only facing political pressure but also an enormous financial disadvantage from outside groups. Ruffalo wrote, “And beat 60 mil in PAC and AIPAC funding against him.” He was referring to what he claimed was roughly $60 million in political funding mobilized against El-Sayed during the race.
Ruffalo went on to accuse El-Sayed’s opponents of engaging in unfair campaign tactics. He wrote, “They smeared him, they contorted his resume and played racist anti-Muslim games, and they got nothing. We don’t want it anymore. We want justice, we want fairness, and we want your money out of our political system. Get out.” According to the actor, the election result showed that many voters were rejecting personal attacks and the growing influence of money in American politics.
His remarks quickly sparked widespread discussion online. Many social media users echoed Ruffalo’s views, arguing that El-Sayed’s victory reflected growing frustration with the Democratic Party’s traditional leadership. One user commented, “It’s been their game for decades now, and so many people are waking up. DSA has exploded, and I know a lot of my friends switched to No Party Preference in CA.”

Another commenter expressed disappointment with what they viewed as the party’s passive approach, writing, “We’re all tired of the passive ‘people will vote for us because we aren’t Republicans’ and electing corporate Dems who do nothing to fight back. Exhausting.”
Some critics went even further, directing their frustration toward Democratic National Committee leadership. One social media user claimed, “DNC leadership doesn’t want to win. Their priority (like many politicians) is to get just enough votes… to keep their chairs, government paychecks and benefits, sweet insider trading info and lobbying money.” These reactions underscored the ongoing debate between the Democratic Party’s progressive and establishment wings.
In fact, Ruffalo had publicly backed Abdul El-Sayed well before Election Day. The actor appeared in a fundraising video supporting the campaign, describing El-Sayed’s candidacy as a reflection of years of organizing within the progressive movement.
During that appearance, Ruffalo said, “This is our movement coming to bear fruit. I mean, this is what we started in 2016. This is where the progressives have been moving.” He argued that progressive politicians and voters were beginning to see the results of their long-term efforts.

He also expressed optimism about the movement’s future, stating, “This is our time. And they have to spend more and more money each time to beat us. And it’s just a matter of time till they flop, and this could be it.” Ruffalo suggested that despite increasingly expensive election campaigns, progressive candidates were steadily gaining momentum.
This is far from the first time Ruffalo has attracted attention for his political activism. Earlier this year, while attending the Golden Globe Awards, he criticized President Donald Trump over the conflict in Venezuela. During his remarks, he said, “We’re in the middle of a war with Venezuela that we illegally invaded. He’s telling the world that international law doesn’t matter to him. The only thing that matters to him is his own morality.”
The actor continued his criticism by adding, “If we’re relying on this guy’s morality for the most powerful country in the world, then we’re all in a lot of trouble. I love this country. And what I’m seeing here happening is not America.” His comments quickly generated polarized reactions across both mainstream media and social media platforms.
More recently, Ruffalo also criticized Senator John Fetterman after the Democrat reaffirmed his support for Israel during a podcast interview with Jon Stewart. Posting on X, the actor argued that Fetterman was no longer representing the interests of American citizens.

Ruffalo wrote, “Here’s the problem. When you put another country above the USA, when you are in the US government, no matter what you say, you aren’t working for the American people. Go be a lobbyist.” He went on to call for the senator’s resignation if he intended to prioritize another nation’s interests.
He further stated, “Register as a lobbyist for a foreign government and make your living that way, but don’t take a paycheck from the US taxpayer. Get out of representing the people of the USA.” The comments reinforced Ruffalo’s willingness to speak openly on highly divisive political issues.
Born in Wisconsin in 1967, Mark Ruffalo began his acting career in the early 1990s before earning widespread critical acclaim with You Can Count on Me. He later built an impressive filmography with acclaimed titles including Zodiac, Shutter Island, Foxcatcher, Spotlight, and Poor Things. His performances have earned him multiple Academy Award nominations and established him as one of Hollywood’s most respected dramatic actors.
Ruffalo achieved global fame portraying Bruce Banner, also known as the Hulk, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Away from the screen, however, he has become equally recognized for his activism, supporting environmental protection, climate action, clean water initiatives, and a variety of progressive political causes. His outspoken advocacy has become an integral part of his public identity.

In his personal life, Ruffalo has been married to actress and entrepreneur Sunrise Coigney since 2000, and the couple share three children. Their relationship has remained notably private compared with many Hollywood marriages. Rather than personal scandals, the controversies surrounding Ruffalo have largely stemmed from his outspoken political opinions and willingness to weigh in on contentious national and international issues. His consistent activism has earned both strong support from admirers and criticism from opponents, making him one of Hollywood’s most politically engaged public figures.
