Lil Nas X has opened up about a deeply personal chapter of his life, revealing that he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and sharing how the experience has changed the way he understands himself. The Grammy-winning artist spoke candidly about his mental health journey in a message shared with fans, explaining that he has been focusing on recovery, finding stability, and reconnecting with himself after a difficult period.
“I’ve been in rehab for a few months and since then, I’ve been back at home — whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with myself, friends and whatnot — and trying to ground myself down to earth and get out of my head,” Lil Nas X said.

The singer, whose real name is Montero Hill, revealed that he now works with both a therapist and a psychiatrist, describing the support as an important part of his progress. “I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful when I got my bipolar disorder diagnosis,” he shared.
Lil Nas X explained that he had suspected for years that something was affecting his mental health, but he struggled with the idea of receiving a diagnosis and taking medication. He admitted that one of his biggest fears was how others might view him differently.
“I’ve known for the past few years” that he had a mental health condition, he said, but he “didn’t want to have to take medication and have people think different[ly] of me.”
The artist also reflected on the challenges of carrying multiple identities in the public eye. With honesty and humor, he described the emotional weight he felt while navigating fame, identity, and his mental health.
“I’m already Black and gay. Like, ‘Damn, God.’ Black, gay, bipolar. I’m like living life on like extreme hard mode,” the singer said with a laugh.
Despite the difficulties, Lil Nas X emphasized that he is now in a healthier place. He explained that treatment and self-reflection have helped him regain confidence and creativity.

“But on a serious note, I’m doing much better. I’m doing better, I’m feeling better. I’m creating freely and there’s less fear in my heart,” he said.
The musician added that he is learning to appreciate everyday moments and reconnect with the passion that originally brought him into music.
“I’m just smelling the roses, man. … I’ve been doing music for seven years now,” he shared.
Lil Nas X also told fans that new music is on the way, suggesting that this period of personal growth will influence the next stage of his artistic journey.
“I’m excited to go on this journey with you guys, this next chapter. We’ve been through so much together,” he said.
The singer ended his message by thanking supporters who have continued to stand by him throughout his ups and downs.
“Thank you guys for holding it down. I love you and all I want to do is continue to try to make you guys proud and make myself proud,” Lil Nas X said.
Following his announcement, fans and celebrities flooded his social media comments with messages of encouragement and support. Singer Kehlani wrote, “and proud of u bubba 🫶🏼,” while actress Taraji P. Henson shared, “I am so proud of you babe!!! ❤️❤️❤️.” Television personality Andy Cohen also responded with supportive applause emojis.
Other fans praised Lil Nas X for speaking openly about mental health, particularly as a Black and LGBTQ+ artist. One commenter wrote, “‘Extreme Hard Mode’ is so honest. So proud of you. 🫂” Another highlighted the importance of visibility, saying, “Men’s health deserves better. Queer Men’s health deserves better. Black Queer Men’s health deserves better. Take care of yourself 🫶.”
The diagnosis comes nearly a year after a highly publicized incident involving the singer in Los Angeles. Lil Nas X was arrested after police responded to a situation where he was allegedly seen walking through the streets wearing only white underwear and boots. According to reports, he was later involved in an altercation with officers and was accused of striking a police officer before being hospitalized.

Following the incident, Lil Nas X faced several felony charges, including battery with injury on a police officer and resisting an executive officer. He pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
In April, a California judge granted Lil Nas X entry into a mental health diversion program, allowing him to receive treatment and support while addressing the circumstances surrounding the case. The decision reflected a focus on rehabilitation and mental health resources as part of the legal process.
Throughout his career, Lil Nas X has often challenged expectations and transformed difficult moments into opportunities for creative expression. He first gained worldwide recognition in 2019 with “Old Town Road,” a song that became a cultural phenomenon and broke records across the music industry.
The track’s success turned him into one of the most recognizable young artists in the world. His ability to blend country influences, hip-hop, and pop helped redefine conversations about genre boundaries and opened doors for new approaches to mainstream music.
Beyond his musical achievements, Lil Nas X has become known for his openness about identity, self-expression, and personal struggles. After publicly coming out as gay in 2019, he became a significant figure in conversations about representation in the entertainment industry.
His career has also included moments of controversy, particularly surrounding his bold visuals, performances, and willingness to challenge traditional expectations. However, those moments have also contributed to his reputation as an artist who embraces individuality and refuses to follow conventional paths.

The latest chapter of his story focuses less on controversy and more on understanding himself. By sharing his diagnosis, Lil Nas X has presented a more personal side of his life, showing the challenges behind the public image of a global performer.
As he prepares to release new music, the singer appears focused on moving forward with greater awareness and balance. His journey reflects a broader conversation about mental health, especially among public figures who often face pressure to appear strong despite private struggles.
For Lil Nas X, the next chapter is not only about returning to the stage but also about continuing to build a healthier relationship with himself. After years of rapid success, intense public attention, and personal challenges, the artist is now choosing to prioritize healing while continuing the creative path that made him a global star.
