Kim Kardashian’s Daughter Sparks Fresh Controversy—This Time, Even Doctors Are Speaking Out

While many viewed it as another example of North expressing her individuality and unique sense of style, medical experts have raised concerns about the potential long-term health risks associated with this type of body modification.

North first attracted attention in September 2025 when she debuted a dermal piercing on her middle finger at the age of 12. By 2026, her collection had expanded to include several additional piercings across both her fingers and hands. The aesthetic also inspired her debut single, Piercing on My Hand, further reinforcing the look as part of her growing artistic identity.

Her changing appearance immediately fueled debate across social media. Although many critics argued that a teenager is too young to undergo permanent body modifications, neither North nor her mother appeared particularly concerned. On their shared TikTok account, Kim Kardashian responded to fans with just two words: “It’s OK.” North later posted a video of her own, playfully responding to those criticizing her finger piercings.

Medical professionals, however, have taken a very different stance. Dr. Corey Hartman, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Skin Wellness Dermatology, described hand piercings as one of the riskiest locations for body piercing.

His advice was straightforward: “Just don’t do it.” According to Dr. Hartman, these piercings can lead to hypertrophic scarring, hyperpigmentation, disfigurement and even permanent loss of function in the affected body part, particularly for people with highly melanated skin, like North West.

The dermatologist explained that North appears to have a combination of surface piercings and dermal piercings, both of which are considerably more complex than traditional ear piercings.

A surface piercing involves two entry points connected beneath the skin by a barbell, while a dermal piercing has only one visible opening. During the procedure, a small anchor is inserted beneath the skin, allowing the decorative jewelry to appear as though it is floating on the surface. Because of this specialized structure, changing or removing the jewelry requires a trained professional rather than a simple at-home replacement.

Experts note that if the anchor is not implanted deeply enough, the body may recognize it as a foreign object and gradually push it back to the surface through a process known as rejection. Even if the jewelry is intentionally removed, permanent scarring may remain once the skin heals.

Another concern is that inserting the anchor too deeply can damage nearby blood vessels or nerves. A further complication is hypergranulation, a condition in which excess tissue develops around the piercing, creating a raised red bump that may result from irritation or jewelry that fits too tightly.

Doctors are especially concerned because the hand contains a highly complex network of tendons, nerves and blood vessels located just beneath the skin. If a piercing extends beyond the skin or interferes with superficial tendons, it could reduce hand mobility. In severe cases, complications may even result in permanent loss of normal hand function.

For that reason, hand piercings require a far greater level of technical expertise than more common procedures such as earlobe piercings. Dr. Hartman emphasized that if the piercing is performed by someone without adequate training, in a facility that does not maintain sterile conditions, or with improper equipment, the likelihood of complications increases dramatically.

Although Kim Kardashian has not addressed her daughter’s piercings beyond the brief TikTok response, she has consistently defended North’s right to express herself creatively. During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Kardashian explained, “I would never take that creativity away from her. I just think anyone that’s raising kids, especially four kids by myself, I’m doing the best that I can.”

Despite Kim’s support, Dr. Hartman believes that minors are not developmentally equipped to fully understand the lifelong consequences of permanent body modifications. He argues that procedures like these should only be considered with parental or legal guardian consent and after carefully evaluating the child’s maturity, the safety standards of the piercing studio and the qualifications of the piercer.

Even then, his recommendation remains unchanged: “If the desire remains when they turn 18, then they can reconsider at that time.”

Born in 2013, North West is the eldest child of Kim Kardashian and rapper Kanye West. From an early age, she has attracted global media attention simply by being part of one of the world’s most famous celebrity families. Her appearances at Paris Fashion Week, high-profile fashion events and viral TikTok videos with her mother regularly generate millions of views.

Beyond fashion, North has also shown a growing interest in entertainment. She performed on stage during The Lion King at the Hollywood Bowl and officially launched her music career in 2026 with the release of her debut single, Piercing on My Hand. While her performances and artistic choices have often divided public opinion, North has already become one of the most recognizable celebrity children of Generation Alpha.

Kim Kardashian has repeatedly said that she wants her children to freely explore their interests and creativity. Since finalizing her divorce from Kanye West in 2022, she has primarily raised their four children—North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm—while balancing her business empire and legal studies. Throughout the years, Kardashian has frequently spoken about the challenges of parenting in the public eye and her efforts to balance freedom of expression with parental responsibility.

Meanwhile, Kanye West has maintained a relationship with his children despite repeatedly making headlines for controversial public statements and behavior. Kim and Kanye have also publicly disagreed over parenting decisions involving North, including her use of social media, participation in fashion events and future career direction. Even so, both parents have consistently maintained that they want what is best for their children.

North’s decision to embrace increasingly bold forms of self-expression at just 13 years old has once again reignited debate over where the line should be drawn between a minor’s freedom to express themselves and a parent’s responsibility to provide guidance. While many see the piercings as simply another fashion trend that may eventually fade, medical experts continue to stress that procedures such as dermal hand piercings can carry permanent consequences if they are not performed and cared for properly.

For that reason, North West’s latest appearance has become more than just another celebrity fashion story. It has also sparked broader conversations about the influence of social media, celebrity culture and beauty trends on teenagers. Caught between her family’s support, intense public scrutiny and medical warnings, North’s evolving style is likely to remain a closely watched topic in the months ahead.
