Kaitlan Collins Responds to Donald Trump’s Latest Criticism, Says the Focus Should Remain on Journalism

CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins has addressed President Donald Trump’s latest public criticism after once again becoming the subject of his remarks during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner. Speaking with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show, Collins made it clear that she has no interest in making herself the center of the story. Instead, she believes public attention should remain on journalism itself and on the questions reporters ask those in power.

When Stewart asked about Trump’s comments during the event, Collins explained that her approach has remained the same regardless of who occupies the White House. She said, “I’ve always felt this, regardless of who’s the president, whether it’s Joe Biden, Donald Trump. It’s really not about me, and I don’t want it to be about my reaction. And so I think if you let it become about that, then it becomes a back and forth between the two of us.”

According to Collins, the responsibility of a journalist is not to respond to personal attacks but to remain focused on reporting. She told Stewart, “I just think in those moments, it’s important to put the reminder back on the work, on the question, and on the non-answers that we get.” In her view, journalism is about persistently asking difficult questions and holding public officials accountable, rather than allowing personal disputes to overshadow the purpose of the profession.

Her comments came after Donald Trump mentioned Collins during his speech at the WHCA dinner. During his remarks, the president made several sarcastic comments about the CNN anchor, including claiming that she “never smiles.” It was far from the first time Trump has publicly criticized Collins, who has become known for asking direct and often challenging questions during White House press briefings.

In addition to those personal remarks, Trump also referenced the 2026 WHCA award Collins received for her reporting on his February 2025 meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. While congratulating her, he questioned the legitimacy of the honor, saying, “She shouldn’t get the award. It was a fake, but I didn’t mind.”

Responding to that comment, Collins suggested that receiving the award had clearly frustrated the president. She said, “The fact that I got an award for it really bothered him clearly.” At the same time, she emphasized that she was not particularly surprised by his reaction because similar incidents have occurred throughout her years covering the White House.

The journalist added that personal criticism from Trump has become fairly common during her reporting. She explained, “That happens pretty regularly inside the Oval Office. This is just a bigger venue where it was happening.” According to Collins, the only difference this time was that the remarks were delivered before a much larger audience instead of during a routine press briefing.

What surprised her most, however, was the atmosphere inside the room. Collins recalled, “What was most surprising to me was the room was filled with a lot of his staffers, his cabinet, his allies, Republicans in Congress… it was so quiet in the room during the president’s remarks.” For her, the silence from the audience stood out even more than the criticism directed toward her personally.

Born in 1992 in Prattville, Alabama, Kaitlan Collins studied journalism and political science at the University of Alabama before beginning her career covering entertainment and politics. Her breakthrough came after joining The Daily Caller, where she quickly became the publication’s White House correspondent during Donald Trump’s first presidential term.

In 2017, Collins joined CNN as a White House correspondent, becoming one of the youngest journalists to hold the position at a major American television network. Her direct questioning style and willingness to pursue sensitive political topics helped establish her reputation, while also making her a frequent target of criticism from President Trump.

One of the most widely publicized incidents occurred in 2018 when the White House revoked Collins’ access to a press event after she questioned officials about Russian President Vladimir Putin and former Trump attorney Michael Cohen. The decision prompted widespread criticism from numerous American news organizations, including the White House Correspondents’ Association, which argued that journalists must be free to ask difficult questions without fear of retaliation.

Over the following years, Collins continued covering the White House under both the Biden and Trump administrations. Reporting on two very different presidencies allowed her to build extensive experience in political journalism and reinforced her reputation as a reporter determined to obtain answers from those in power.

In 2023, CNN promoted Collins to host a primetime news program, marking another significant milestone in her broadcasting career. Alongside her political reporting, she has conducted interviews with many influential public figures. Her calm on-air presence and concise yet pointed interviewing style have become defining characteristics of her work.

Despite her professional accomplishments, Collins has frequently found herself at the center of debates on social media. Supporters of Donald Trump have often criticized her questioning as confrontational, while many journalists and press freedom advocates argue that she is simply fulfilling the media’s role of holding elected officials accountable in a democratic society.

Away from the cameras, Collins has maintained a notably private personal life. She rarely discusses her relationships publicly, and her social media presence focuses almost exclusively on journalism, political reporting, and interviews rather than her private affairs.

The relationship between Donald Trump and Kaitlan Collins has therefore become one of the most recognizable examples of the ongoing tension between political leaders and the American press. Over the years, Trump has repeatedly singled her out during press conferences and public appearances, offering harsh criticism of her reporting style. Collins, however, has consistently maintained that she will continue asking the same tough questions regardless of which political party controls the White House.

By choosing not to respond personally to Trump’s latest attacks, Collins once again demonstrated the professional philosophy she has repeatedly expressed throughout her career. Rather than allowing personal disputes to dominate the conversation, she believes the focus should remain on public policy, unanswered questions, and government accountability. That approach has helped establish her as one of CNN’s leading political journalists while ensuring that her work continues to be part of the broader national conversation whenever tensions between the White House and the press come into focus.
