Johnny Depp Makes Surprise Comic-Con Return, Slips in a Subtle Jab at Donald Trump

Johnny Depp made a headline-grabbing return to San Diego Comic-Con as he appeared to promote Paramount Pictures’ upcoming film Ebenezer. Rather than taking part in a conventional panel, the actor stayed fully immersed in character as Ebenezer Scrooge from Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol, delivering an elaborate in-character performance that surprised attendees.

The promotional space was transformed into a Victorian-style Christmas village inspired by Dickens’ beloved story. Dressed as Scrooge, Depp wandered through the set, interacting with fellow performers and visitors, creating the feeling that fans had stepped directly into the world of the iconic literary character instead of attending a standard movie promotion.

The highlight of the appearance came during an improvised-looking exchange when Scrooge began pulling decorative Christmas garlands off a gate. Claiming the decorations were “poison” that should be kept away from children, the character was challenged by another performer, only to insist that everything on the gate belonged to his property.

The conversation soon shifted toward taxes and tariffs. Remaining in character, Depp joked that people would eventually have to pay taxes simply because the decorations were there before adding that he would “put tariffs on the gate.” The line immediately drew loud laughter and applause from thousands of fans in attendance.

Although Depp never mentioned President Donald Trump by name, many audience members interpreted the remark as a clear jab at the president’s tariff policies. Videos of the moment quickly spread across social media, making it one of the most talked-about highlights of Comic-Con’s opening day.

The joke carried additional political significance as it came only days after President Trump reignited trade tensions with Canada by invoking a nearly century-old tariff law to impose 50 percent duties on a wide range of Canadian imports. Earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court also blocked parts of the administration’s broader tariff policy.

This was far from the first time Johnny Depp has publicly criticized Donald Trump. While promoting the satirical film Donald Trump’s The Art of the Deal: The Movie in 2016, Depp openly shared his views on the businessman who would later become President of the United States.

Speaking at Arizona State University, Depp said, “It’s not about being a rich kid or anything like that. I approached Donald Trump as what you see when you really watch him. There’s a pretense, there’s something created about him, in a sense of bully-dom.” He then offered a blunt assessment, adding, “But what he is, I believe, is a brat.”

The actor also criticized Trump’s speaking style, saying, “Also, the absurdity of it, where his sentences might travel.” A year later, however, Depp publicly apologized after making controversial remarks involving the president during his appearance at the Glastonbury Festival.

Beyond the political moment, Depp’s Comic-Con appearance marked an important milestone in his career. Ebenezer is his first major Hollywood studio project in several years, following a period during which his career in the United States slowed dramatically because of his highly publicized legal battles.

Johnny Depp has long been regarded as one of Hollywood’s most distinctive stars. Rising to prominence in the late 1980s, he became known for portraying eccentric and unconventional characters, particularly through his collaborations with director Tim Burton in films such as Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride. His unique acting style helped establish him as one of the industry’s most recognizable performers.

He achieved worldwide superstardom after taking on the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The quirky, charismatic pirate quickly became one of the most iconic movie characters of the 21st century and earned Depp his first Academy Award nomination.

Beyond the blockbuster pirate series, Depp has received widespread acclaim for performances in Finding Neverland, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Donnie Brasco, Black Mass, and Public Enemies. Throughout his career, he has earned three Academy Award nominations, multiple Golden Globe nominations, and a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors.

Depp’s personal life has often attracted as much attention as his acting career. Before marrying Amber Heard, he spent more than a decade in a relationship with French actress Vanessa Paradis. Together they have two children, Lily-Rose Depp and Jack Depp. Although the couple separated in 2012, they have remained on good terms while co-parenting their children.

In 2015, Depp married actress Amber Heard after several years together. Their marriage lasted little more than a year before Heard filed for divorce and accused the actor of domestic abuse. The allegations quickly became one of Hollywood’s most high-profile controversies and significantly affected Depp’s public image and professional opportunities.

The legal battle culminated in the widely publicized 2022 defamation trial in Virginia. After weeks of testimony broadcast around the world, the jury ruled that Heard had defamed Depp through statements connected to her 2018 domestic abuse op-ed, despite not naming him directly. Depp was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, with the punitive award later reduced under Virginia law. Heard also succeeded on one count of her countersuit and was awarded $2 million.

Since the trial, Depp has gradually rebuilt his career by taking on film projects in Europe, pursuing directing and producing opportunities, and continuing partnerships with major fashion and fragrance brands. While public opinion about the actor remains divided, his enduring popularity and influence within the entertainment industry remain undeniable.

Paramount’s decision to cast Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge is widely seen as another sign that major Hollywood studios are increasingly open to welcoming the actor back. The role once again allows Depp to showcase the strengths that have defined his career—bringing layered, eccentric, and emotionally complex characters vividly to life.

As a result, Depp’s Comic-Con appearance was about much more than promoting a new film. Alongside a humorous moment that many interpreted as a subtle critique of President Trump’s tariff policies, the event also symbolized another step in the actor’s ongoing Hollywood comeback. With Ebenezer, Johnny Depp adds yet another iconic literary figure to a career already filled with some of cinema’s most memorable performances.
