Johnny Depp may be on the verge of returning to the role that has defined much of his career for more than two decades. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that he is in talks with Depp about Pirates of the Caribbean 6, while a new screenplay continues to be developed. However, at this stage, the actor’s return has not been officially finalized.

Bruckheimer shared the news at D23, saying that the team is working with Depp and hoping to get the project completed. The producer had previously left the door open for Jack Sparrow to return if Depp was satisfied with how the character was written. That condition means the character’s future still depends heavily on the final screenplay.

Depp first portrayed Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. With his loose, humorous and eccentric performance, he transformed Sparrow from an adventure character into a pop-culture icon. The role earned Depp an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and became one of the most recognizable performances of his career.

The new film is unlikely to revolve exclusively around Jack Sparrow in the same way as the previous five installments. According to the information currently available, Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is being developed as an expansion of the franchise, with the central character reportedly set to be played by Margot Robbie, while Sparrow could appear in a supporting role. If that plan remains in place, the film would represent not simply a continuation of the old story, but a transition toward a new generation of characters.

This direction had been discussed before the project went through a series of changes. Margot Robbie was previously attached to a new Pirates project, while the franchise has been searching for a way to balance the need for a fresh story with the enduring popularity of Jack Sparrow. If Depp returns, his appearance could therefore serve as a bridge between the franchise’s previous era and its next generation.

The last time audiences saw Depp as Jack Sparrow was in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, released in 2017. The film earned nearly $800 million worldwide, while the overall franchise has generated more than $4.5 billion at the global box office. Those figures demonstrate that Pirates remains a commercially powerful property with enough appeal to support another major chapter.

But the period between Dead Men Tell No Tales and the current negotiations has been one of the most turbulent stretches of Depp’s career. The actor became embroiled in a prolonged legal dispute and allegations connected to his marriage to Amber Heard. The controversy became one of Hollywood’s most closely watched stories for several years and had a significant impact on the public images and careers of both actors.

Depp and Heard met while working together on The Rum Diary and married in 2015. Their marriage lasted only around two years before ending in divorce. The relationship was followed by opposing allegations involving domestic abuse, leading to a series of legal disputes that continued for years. Both sides presented their own accounts and arguments throughout the proceedings.

In 2022, Depp and Heard faced each other in a high-profile defamation trial in Virginia after Depp sued Heard over a 2018 Washington Post opinion article. Although Heard did not name Depp in the piece, his legal team argued that the article was understood to refer to allegations she had previously made. Heard countersued, turning the case into a closely followed legal battle that attracted global attention.

The 2022 jury verdict was largely favorable to Depp, while also finding in favor of Heard on one part of her counterclaim. Depp was awarded more than $10 million in damages, while Heard received $2 million for one of the statements at issue in her countersuit. Later that year, the two reached a settlement, with Heard’s insurance company paying $1 million to resolve the case.

The trial also highlighted how deeply the controversy had affected Depp’s career. During the proceedings, Depp’s side argued that the allegations had contributed to him losing the opportunity to appear in Pirates of the Caribbean 6. However, evidence and testimony presented during the trial indicated that the timing and circumstances surrounding his departure from the franchise were more complicated, involving both his public image and other professional considerations.

Depp also left the Fantastic Beasts franchise after losing a 2020 libel case in the United Kingdom against The Sun. That period effectively removed him from many major Hollywood productions, despite the fact that he had previously been one of the industry’s most commercially successful stars. Films such as Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland had established his remarkably varied career alongside the enormous success of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Jack Sparrow therefore represents far more than a successful role in Depp’s filmography. After The Curse of the Black Pearl became a worldwide phenomenon, Sparrow quickly became the face of the franchise. Depp went on to portray him in Dead Man’s Chest, At World’s End, On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales, developing a performance style that became almost inseparable from the character.

Outside Pirates, Depp was involved in a long-term relationship with actress Winona Ryder before later building a family with singer and actress Vanessa Paradis. Depp and Paradis had two children, Lily-Rose Depp and Jack Depp, before ending their relationship in 2012. Lily-Rose later pursued acting and fashion, maintaining the Depp family’s presence in the entertainment industry.

Following his marriage to Heard, Depp’s romantic life has attracted less attention than during earlier stages of his career. He has devoted considerable time to music alongside acting, performing with rock musicians and becoming a member of the group Hollywood Vampires alongside Alice Cooper and Joe Perry. Music had been an important part of Depp’s life long before he became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable movie stars.

In recent years, Depp has also begun rebuilding his presence in cinema. He appeared in Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, playing King Louis XV. The film premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and became one of Depp’s most notable screen appearances following his prolonged legal battles. He is also currently promoting Ebenezer, a new adaptation of A Christmas Carol in which he plays Ebenezer Scrooge.

Against that background, a potential return as Jack Sparrow carries particular significance. It would not simply give Depp another opportunity to revisit a franchise that helped define his career; it could also become an important milestone in his efforts to re-establish himself within Hollywood. At the same time, Bruckheimer’s comments make clear that the project remains in development and that the screenplay will ultimately determine whether Depp returns.

If Depp does come back, the next question will be how much space Jack Sparrow receives in the new story. The character could serve primarily as a supporting figure alongside Margot Robbie’s protagonist rather than remaining the central focus. Such an approach would allow the franchise to retain one of its most recognizable icons while creating room for new characters and a different narrative direction.

For audiences who grew up with Jack Sparrow, even a limited appearance by Depp could carry considerable nostalgic value. But for Disney and the filmmakers, the challenge will be turning that return into a meaningful part of the story rather than relying solely on memories of the earlier films. Pirates of the Caribbean needs a new direction if it is to continue for another generation, and Depp’s potential appearance could provide a link between its past and future.

For now, Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has no official release date and no final confirmation of its complete cast. What is clear is that Jerry Bruckheimer is working with Depp and that the screenplay remains in development. Nearly a decade after Jack Sparrow last appeared on screen, the possibility of Johnny Depp once again putting on the captain’s coat is becoming increasingly real, although exactly how large a role Sparrow will have in the next chapter remains to be seen.
