Inde Navarrette: From Obsession Breakout Star to the New Rogue of Marvel's X-Men

Inde Navarrette is quickly becoming one of Hollywood's most talked-about young actresses following the success of the horror film Obsession. Her performance as Nikki—a childhood friend who transforms into an obsessive, possessive, and violent figure—earned widespread praise from audiences while marking a major turning point in her career after Marvel Studios confirmed she would portray Rogue in the upcoming X-Men reboot.

Obsession follows Bear, a shy man in his twenties who wishes for his childhood friend Nikki to love him more than anything. Instead of creating the romance he dreamed of, the wish unleashes a terrifying chain of events as Nikki gradually becomes consumed by obsession, possessiveness, and violence. The film quickly became a social media sensation, not only for its horror elements but also for the ongoing debate over who is truly the victim and who is ultimately responsible for the tragedy.

As Nikki, Inde Navarrette received widespread acclaim for portraying the character's complex psychological transformation. From an ordinary young woman to the terrifying "Freaky Nikki," she demonstrated remarkable control over her facial expressions, voice, and body language, helping elevate the low-budget production into one of the year's biggest breakout horror films.

One of Obsession's most talked-about sequences features Nikki repeatedly smashing her head through a car window before violently attacking Sarah inside the vehicle. Impressively, Navarrette performed the entire scene herself without the help of a stunt double. Wearing a protective helmet beneath her wig, she completed the demanding sequence in a single take.

Speaking about developing the character, Inde Navarrette explained that she and director Curry Barker created Nikki's physical movements entirely from scratch rather than drawing inspiration from other films.

"Nikki's movement was something Curry and I built completely from scratch. It wasn't because we didn't want to take inspiration from somewhere else—it was because everything happened so quickly. We only had 26 days to shoot with an independent budget, and that limitation naturally shaped the character's movement."

The actress admitted that movement had never been her strongest skill, despite having a background in dance. According to Navarrette, Barker would physically demonstrate movements during filming for her to imitate. She jokingly said the director essentially became the movie's choreographer.

Not only did she perform all of the film's action scenes herself, but every unsettling facial expression and eerie vocal performance audiences hear from Nikki also came directly from Navarrette.

"Yes, every facial expression and every vocal sound in the movie is me. We didn't use AI or CGI. Everything was done practically."

She explained that the sound team only adjusted the pitch of certain vocal effects to complement the film's sound design. Her lengthy and disturbing monologue, one of the movie's standout moments, was actually the audition scene that ultimately earned her the role.

Following the success of Obsession, Navarrette's career reached another major milestone when Marvel Studios officially announced that she would play Rogue in the upcoming X-Men reboot. The casting was revealed during Disney's D23 event in August 2026 and immediately became one of Marvel fans' most discussed announcements.

In the film, Navarrette will appear alongside a star-studded cast including Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Adam Driver as Mister Sinister. Directed by Jake Schreier, the movie is currently scheduled for release in May 2028.

The role also marks Navarrette's return to the superhero genre after portraying Sarah Cushing in Superman & Lois from 2021 to 2024. Her move from DC to Marvel has attracted considerable attention and is widely viewed as a significant step forward in her career.

Born Danielle Fabiola Navarrette on March 3, 2001, in Tucson, Arizona, Inde comes from both Mexican and Australian heritage. Her mother is a first-generation Australian, while her father's family has deep Mexican roots. Because her father served in the United States Marine Corps, the family relocated frequently throughout her childhood.

Navarrette has revealed that by the age of 15 she had attended 11 different schools. Constantly adapting to new environments helped her develop independence and strong observational skills, qualities that later became valuable assets in her acting career.

Her passion for film also began at home. Navarrette has often credited her mother and sister, who admired legendary actresses such as Julia Roberts and Audrey Hepburn. The family regularly watched the Academy Awards together, inspiring her dream of becoming an actress from an early age.

Before Obsession, Navarrette gained international recognition for playing Estela de la Cruz in the fourth season of Netflix's hit series 13 Reasons Why. Although her role was relatively brief, it introduced her to a global audience and opened the door to larger television opportunities.

Over the past few years, Navarrette has established herself as one of Hollywood's most versatile young performers. From teen dramas and superhero television to psychological horror and now a major Marvel blockbuster, she has consistently demonstrated her determination not to be confined to a single type of role.

Unlike many stars of her generation, Inde Navarrette keeps her personal life largely out of the spotlight. She rarely discusses her relationships or private matters publicly and has avoided major controversies since entering the entertainment industry. Instead, her public image has remained focused on her work and the characters she brings to life.

At just 25 years old, Inde Navarrette now stands at the most significant stage of her career. Obsession established her as one of horror's newest breakout talents, while her casting as Rogue is expected to introduce her to an even broader global audience. With proven acting ability and increasingly high-profile opportunities in Hollywood, Navarrette is widely regarded as one of the industry's most promising young stars for the years ahead.
