“I’m Grateful He Stayed”: Alex Jones Reflects on the Decision That Changed Her Life

At 49, Alex Jones is entering a particularly meaningful chapter of her life. The popular BBC presenter is not only preparing to celebrate her 50th birthday next year, but is also reflecting on another major milestone: more than a decade of marriage to her husband, Charlie Thomson. In a recent interview with Women & Home, the television host shared her thoughts on family, love, motherhood in her forties, and the journey she and her husband have taken through some of life’s most challenging moments.

Last year, Alex and Charlie celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary with a trip to Auckland, New Zealand, Charlie’s hometown. The holiday was more than just a family getaway; it became an opportunity for the couple to reflect on everything they had experienced since first meeting. Today, they are parents to three children: Teddy, eight, Kit, six, and Annie, four.

Looking back, Alex admitted she feels proud that their marriage has stood the test of time. “I feel proud that Charlie and I made our marriage work. We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary in Auckland over New Year,” she said. Spending a week on the beach with their children gave the presenter plenty of time to reflect on the decisions that ultimately shaped her life.

Alex revealed that in the early days of their relationship, the future was far from certain. Charlie had been considering a return to New Zealand, a decision that could have ended their romance before it truly began. “We spent the week on the beach with the kids and it made me take stock. When we were first dating, there was a question mark over whether he’d go back to New Zealand, but he decided to stay. I’m grateful he did that for me and that we’re able to raise our children here.”

Charlie’s decision to remain in the UK would later prove to be a defining moment for both of them. Alex met the insurance broker at a party, and the pair quickly formed a strong connection. Their relationship developed naturally over several years before they married on New Year’s Eve in 2015. Unlike many high-profile couples, Alex and Charlie have largely kept their private life away from the spotlight, choosing a relatively low-key family life over public attention.

Speaking about motherhood, Alex said she has never regretted becoming a parent later than many women. She welcomed her first child, Teddy, at the age of 41. Before that, she frequently faced questions about marriage and children, particularly as she had already become one of Britain’s most recognizable television personalities.

“I feel like I had kids at the right time,” she explained. “I’m a big fatalist and think that what’s meant for you will come your way. I forget that sometimes, and I have moments when I’m like, ‘Why didn’t it happen sooner?’ but I think things happen when you’re ready.”

Alex believes everything arrived at exactly the right moment. Before starting a family, she and Charlie had the opportunity to travel, buy their first home, and build a solid foundation for the future. “We could have had children sooner, but I wouldn’t change our decision to wait. Life is an opportunity to make the best of everything.”

As a result, rather than dwelling on what might have been, Alex chooses to appreciate every aspect of her current life. Even the smallest details of family life have become sources of joy. “Charlie and I had travelled, bought our first house, and we were in a good place and ready. People say, ‘You’ll look back on this and hanker for these days.’”

The presenter also reflected on the hectic pace of raising three children. “I already know how lucky I am to have kids at this age, and it’s amazing. All of the mundane stuff, the WhatsApp groups, the running around, and the 50 million water bottles you can never find lids for.” For Alex, that familiar chaos is precisely what makes a home feel alive.

“I think, ‘Imagine if it was quiet in the house?’ The noise and the pace and the rhythm of it is what makes you feel vital and alive. I appreciate it so much.” Her comments reveal a more mature perspective from a woman who spent much of her younger years focusing on her career.

Born in Wales in 1977, Alex Jones began her broadcasting career at an early age. After graduating from university, she worked on a variety of local television programs before gradually establishing herself within the BBC. Her biggest breakthrough came in 2010 when she became a presenter on The One Show, one of the most popular magazine programs on British television.

Her charm, intelligence, and ability to connect with guests quickly made her a familiar face to millions of viewers. Over the years, she has interviewed everyone from Hollywood stars to members of the Royal Family, building a reputation as one of the most trusted and approachable presenters in the country. Unlike many television personalities, Alex has largely avoided major scandals, maintaining a stable public image in an increasingly competitive media landscape.

However, her personal life has not always been easy. One of the greatest challenges she and her family have faced has been Charlie’s battle with both physical and mental health issues. In recent years, Alex has spoken openly about watching her husband struggle with depression following serious health complications.

During an appearance on Jamie Laing’s Great Company podcast, she admitted that she initially did not understand the condition at all. “You have to let go of judgement and I found it really hard, I had to bite my tongue so hard from saying ‘just come on… Come on let’s go for a walk… Let’s go for a drink.’”

She recalled feeling helpless when she realized that ordinary encouragement could not help someone suffering from depression. “Don’t be so ridiculous, this person could not get out of bed, let alone put some clothes on and go for a drink. I hadn’t understood it and that’s my own failing.”

Despite the difficulties, Alex never considered walking away from her marriage. “I’d never run because we’ve made a deal and we don’t run from each other, we face it all head on. We have faced a lot of fun stuff and we’ll face really hard stuff. That is life, it’s up and down.” It is a principle the couple have maintained throughout their relationship and one that has helped them navigate some of their most difficult moments.

The mother of three admitted that even now she is not always certain how best to respond in such situations. However, experience has given her a much deeper understanding of mental illness. “The other thing is if you know that person it’s an illness, it’s not them. If I saw it again in a family member, a friend, I still don’t know whether I’d do the right thing, but I now understand it better than I did.”

Previously, Alex revealed on The MidPoint podcast that Charlie’s health deteriorated significantly after he contracted Lyme disease and viral meningitis. The illnesses affected not only his physical wellbeing but also had a profound impact on his mental health. “He suffers with his mental health and we’ve just been through a really bad period. Charlie’s super fun, but he became a shadow of himself. He was so ill, he really went downhill fast mentally.”

The experience taught Alex that supporting a loved one through mental illness is far more difficult than many people realize. “And again I found myself at a loss thinking ‘Oh my God, I don’t know what to do here’. We all talk a good game, but do we actually know how to help people?”

Her candid comments resonated with many members of the public because they reflected the reality countless families experience behind closed doors. Behind the image of a successful television presenter is a wife and mother who has had to balance work, parenthood, and caring for a partner during some of the hardest periods of his life.

Looking ahead, Alex appears less concerned about age and more focused on appreciating what she has built. Rather than dwelling on milestones or expectations, she is concentrating on the things that matter most: a loving family, a successful career, and a marriage that has endured through both triumphs and adversity. From Charlie’s decision to remain in Britain years ago to their journey raising three children together, every choice has helped shape the life she cherishes today.

As she approaches her 50th birthday, Alex Jones no longer measures success through awards or public recognition. Instead, she takes pride in simpler achievements: a husband who remains by her side after more than a decade, children growing up surrounded by love and laughter, and a family that has weathered both the happiest and most difficult chapters together. For Alex, that is why she believes that, in the end, everything in life arrived exactly when it was meant to.
