From David to Romeo Beckham: Father and Son Share the Same Driving Controversy

Romeo Beckham has been fined after police caught him using his phone while driving his £100,000 Porsche 911 in Westminster, London. Although the incident took place in September last year, it has only recently reached court, once again placing David Beckham’s son under intense media scrutiny.

According to documents presented before Westminster Magistrates’ Court, the 23-year-old was spotted by a police officer looking down at his phone while stopped at a red light on Victoria Street. A female passenger was also in the vehicle at the time. She was reportedly using her own phone, while an unsecured dog sat on her lap.
Police officer Luke Short said he noticed signs that the driver was distracted as he passed the Porsche 911 Carrera. In his statement to the court, he wrote: “As I passed the vehicle on its nearside, I looked down and noted that there was an unrestrained dog sitting on the female passenger’s lap. The female had her head down and was holding a mobile phone.”
The officer went on to describe what he observed from the driver’s seat. “I looked across at the driver. I saw that he too had his head tilted down and appeared to be looking down at a mobile phone he was holding low in his lap, near the base of the steering wheel. I could see that he was scrolling on the device with his thumbs.”

According to police evidence, Romeo Beckham was not merely holding the phone but actively using both hands to operate it. The officer concluded that the driver was significantly distracted and no longer had proper control of the vehicle. He was subsequently pulled over and questioned by police.
Although Romeo only received a warning regarding the unsecured dog, the phone-related offense was treated far more seriously. During the hearing, he was convicted of being “a driver not in a position to have proper control of a vehicle.” He was fined £440 and received three penalty points on his driving licence. Magistrate Phillip Jordan also ordered him to pay £130 in court costs and a £176 victim surcharge.
Police noted that Romeo had initially been offered an opportunity to resolve the matter without court proceedings. He was given the option of accepting a fixed penalty and attending a driver awareness course. However, he failed to respond to the offer, resulting in the case being escalated through the judicial process.

The court further confirmed that when official correspondence was sent to his luxury apartment in southwest London, Romeo did not enter a plea or provide any formal response. As a result, the magistrate reached a verdict based on the police evidence presented before the court.
Another detail highlighted during the proceedings was the presence of the dog in the vehicle. Under Rule 57 of the UK Highway Code, animals must be suitably restrained while travelling in a vehicle. Drivers can face prosecution if an animal causes distraction or interferes with their ability to maintain proper control of the car.
The case immediately drew comparisons to a similar incident involving Romeo’s father nearly seven years ago. In 2019, David Beckham was banned from driving for six months after admitting to using his mobile phone while behind the wheel in slow-moving traffic in London’s West End.

At the time, David told the court that he would miss driving his children to school during the ban. Among those children was Romeo, who was just 16 years old. The striking similarity between the two cases has not gone unnoticed, with both father and son finding themselves facing legal consequences over mobile phone use while driving.
Born in 2002, Romeo Beckham is the second son of David and Victoria Beckham. From an early age, he grew up in the spotlight as a member of one of Britain’s most famous families. Unlike his father, whose name became synonymous with football success, Romeo was often viewed as someone more likely to pursue a future in fashion and entertainment.
In 2013, at just 10 years old, Romeo made headlines when he became the face of a major campaign for luxury fashion house Burberry. The project quickly turned him into one of Britain’s most recognizable celebrity children. Fashion insiders praised his natural confidence in front of the camera and his professionalism despite his young age.

Over the following years, Romeo became a familiar face at international fashion events. He collaborated with several major brands and cultivated an image that blended youthful energy with contemporary street style. Thanks to both his high-profile background and his striking appearance, he gradually built a following of his own rather than simply being known as David Beckham’s son.
Despite his growing success in fashion, football remained a significant passion. Romeo spent time in Arsenal’s youth system before stepping away from the sport. He later surprised many observers by returning to football through Inter Miami’s reserve setup, a club owned by his father in the United States. The move attracted considerable media attention and reignited speculation about a possible sporting career.
However, his football journey ultimately proved short-lived. After spending time in the United States, Romeo increasingly shifted his focus back toward modelling and fashion. His frequent appearances on runways and in advertising campaigns suggested that the fashion industry offered a more natural path than the highly competitive world of professional football.

Alongside his professional pursuits, Romeo’s personal life has often attracted public interest. For several years, he was in a high-profile relationship with model and content creator Mia Regan. The pair experienced multiple breakups and reconciliations before eventually ending their relationship for good. Following the split, Romeo was linked to London-based DJ and model Kim Turnbull.
Kim Turnbull soon became a familiar presence at events attended by Romeo. The couple were regularly photographed together in Chelsea, at fashion gatherings, and while spending time with their dog. British tabloids frequently speculated about the seriousness of their relationship, although both have remained relatively private about their personal lives.
Beyond romance, Romeo has also found himself caught up in ongoing tensions within the Beckham family. In recent years, international media outlets have extensively reported on an apparent rift between Brooklyn Beckham and his parents. Brooklyn, the eldest son of David and Victoria Beckham, has been widely rumored to have grown increasingly distant from the family following his marriage to Nicola Peltz.
The family tensions have generated widespread media coverage, with several of Brooklyn’s public statements and social media activity interpreted as indirect criticism of his parents. Throughout the controversy, Romeo has generally been viewed as standing firmly by David and Victoria’s side.

While the mobile phone offense is far from a major scandal, it nevertheless creates unwanted headlines for a public figure whose image has largely remained polished and controversy-free. As Romeo’s modelling career becomes increasingly intertwined with global fashion brands, even relatively minor legal issues can attract disproportionate attention from both the public and the press.
At 23, Romeo Beckham continues to carve out an identity separate from the enormous legacy of his parents. He enjoys the advantages that come with fame, industry connections, and international recognition, but he also faces the constant scrutiny that accompanies life in one of the world’s most famous celebrity families. His latest driving conviction may ultimately prove to be a minor setback, yet it serves as a reminder that every action taken by members of high-profile dynasties is likely to attract attention far beyond their immediate circle.
