Anna Van Patten has offered a detailed look behind the scenes of Euphoria, revealing the surprisingly complex and highly technical process involved in creating her character’s prosthetic Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) for the HBO series’ Season 3 finale. The actress, who portrays Kitty, described the experience as both “fascinating” and intense, particularly during the production of the episode’s dramatic storyline in which her character is sent across the border into Mexico for the cosmetic procedure.

Speaking about her “Euphoria” experience, Van Patten explained that the transformation began long before filming even started. “The prosthetic chapter of my ‘Euphoria’ experience was wild,” she said, noting that she “first had to get a butt scan.” The process marked the beginning of a highly detailed prosthetic creation designed to achieve a hyper-realistic result on screen.

The production required extensive preparation and precision. “Because we shot that Silver Slipper shootout scene… it was a 10-day shoot, so I wore [a prosthetic butt] every day for 10 days, and it would take maybe two hours to put on,” she explained. Over time, the process became more efficient, but the physical demands remained significant throughout the shoot.

One of the most unusual challenges, according to Van Patten, was the restriction on sitting while wearing the prosthetic. To accommodate this, the production team designed a special support system. She revealed that they “built [her] a leaning contraption” so she could rest between takes without damaging the prosthetic or interrupting continuity.

Despite the difficulty, Van Patten said the experience had a strangely light-hearted side to it. “While Van Patten admitted the whole process was ‘really challenging,’ she also said it was ‘so funny in a way.’” The blend of discomfort and humor became a defining part of her memory of the shoot.

The realism of the prosthetic was one of the most striking aspects of the production. “So many people thought it was real. The girls in the club, they thought it was my real butt, so in person, it really did look so real … they drew on veins, drew on freckles, it was the whole process, but it was fascinating,” she explained, highlighting the level of detail involved in its creation.

Van Patten joined Euphoria in Season 3 as Kitty, a character described as a sweet yet naive stripper working under the control of the villainous club owner Alamo Brown, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. Her storyline placed her in the darker, more surreal corners of the series’ narrative universe, which has long been known for its stylized depiction of youth, trauma, and excess.

Kitty’s storyline unfolded during a season that was already marked by major narrative shocks. The finale included a particularly devastating moment in which Rue Bennett, the series’ central character, dies of a fentanyl overdose, a development that significantly reshaped the emotional tone of the show’s conclusion.

Series creator Sam Levinson defended the decision, describing Rue’s ending as the most “honest ending” for the story. He also linked the narrative choice to the broader thematic direction of the series, emphasizing the realism behind its portrayal of addiction and relapse. “People relapse. They f–k up. They’re not ready to get clean,” he explained. “There’s no reason to sugarcoat it. I wanted to tell this story for Angus and for people who weren’t granted a second chance.”

The finale also incorporated a tribute to late cast member Angus Cloud, whose passing in July 2023 deeply affected the production and its audience. Previously unseen footage of his character Fezco was included as part of the emotional closing sequence, adding another layer of weight to the season’s conclusion.

When asked whether Kitty would have understood the circumstances surrounding Rue’s death, Van Patten responded thoughtfully. “I think Kitty really tries to see the best in people,” she said. “I don’t think she would have known what happened to Rue. I think Kitty really tries to see the best in people, and I think lots of people aren’t telling her things. So she’s left to figure it all out on her own, and she doesn’t know where to put her trust because so many different things are happening.”

Beyond her role in Euphoria, Anna Van Patten has built a growing presence in television, with her performance in Season 3 marking a notable step in her career. The physical and emotional demands of the role have positioned her as part of the series’ expanding ensemble, which continues to explore increasingly complex and provocative storylines.

Her work on Kitty also reflects the broader production approach of Euphoria, which has become known for its meticulous attention to visual detail, practical effects, and immersive character design. The use of prosthetics in particular has been one of the show’s defining behind-the-scenes features, often contributing to its heightened realism and stylized aesthetic.

Van Patten’s account adds to a growing body of cast insights that highlight just how technically demanding the series can be for performers, especially in scenes that require extended use of prosthetics and physically restrictive costuming. These production choices, while challenging, have become central to the show’s distinctive visual identity.

As Euphoria concluded its third season, discussions around its storytelling choices and production methods continued to generate attention, with fans analyzing both its narrative decisions and its behind-the-scenes craftsmanship. Van Patten’s experience offers a rare glimpse into the intersection of performance, prosthetic artistry, and the extreme realism that defines the series’ most talked-about moments.

While the future of Euphoria remains uncertain following reports that Season 3 may serve as its final chapter, the impact of its characters and production techniques continues to resonate within contemporary television culture.
