After years of largely staying out of the public eye, Emma Watson has made a rare appearance at the Royal Foundation’s United for Wildlife forum in London. The event was also attended by Prince William, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, and presenter June Sarpong.
The Harry Potter star took part in discussions focused on wildlife conservation and environmental protection. Footage shared by Prince William on the United for Wildlife Instagram account showed Watson participating in a panel discussion alongside other speakers.

Watson also posted a video montage from the event on her own Instagram account, accompanied by a message highlighting the broader implications of wildlife crime.
“Wildlife trafficking is the tip of a very exploitative iceberg. It can be the canary in the coal-mine for an industry that does tremendous harm (but therefore has an opportunity to make tremendous impact) for both people and planet!”
Her appearance immediately drew attention, as it marked one of the few times the actress has attended a major public event in recent years. Although Watson has never officially retired from acting, she has largely stepped away from Hollywood since appearing in Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed 2019 film Little Women.
In the Oscar-nominated drama, Watson portrayed Meg March, the eldest and most traditional of the March sisters. The film remains her most recent major screen role, fueling years of speculation about whether she would eventually return to acting.

Watson has previously spoken candidly about her reasons for stepping back from the entertainment industry. In a September 2025 interview with Hollywood Authentic, she reflected on the pressures that came with global fame and the commercial side of filmmaking.
“In some ways I really won the lottery [with acting], and what happened to me is so unusual,” she said. “A bigger component than the actual job itself is the promotion and selling of that piece of work, this piece of art. The balance of that can get quite thrown off. I think I’ll be honest and straight-forward, and say: I do not miss selling things. I found that to be quite soul-destroying.”
The actress explained that while she remains grateful for the opportunities acting provided, she found the constant cycle of promotion and publicity emotionally draining. Her comments suggested that her distance from Hollywood stems less from a lack of passion for acting and more from discomfort with the machinery surrounding celebrity culture.
Despite her absence from the screen, Watson emphasized in the same interview that she still deeply misses performing and “profoundly” misses being able to use her acting skills.
Born in Paris, France, in 1990, Emma Watson moved to England as a young child. Her life changed dramatically when she was cast as Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone at just nine years old. At the time, she had no professional film experience.
Over the next decade, Watson grew up in front of a global audience alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint. The Harry Potter franchise transformed her into one of the most recognizable young stars in the world. Beyond her performances, she gained admiration for balancing her acting career with academics, eventually attending Brown University in the United States while continuing to work in film.

Following the conclusion of the Harry Potter series in 2011, Watson deliberately sought roles that would distinguish her from Hermione. She appeared in films such as The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Noah, and The Circle before achieving another major commercial success with Disney’s live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast in 2017. The film grossed more than $1 billion worldwide and remains one of the highest-grossing projects of her career.
Away from acting, Watson built a reputation as a committed activist and advocate for social causes. In 2014, she was appointed a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and launched the HeForShe campaign, which encouraged men to take an active role in advancing gender equality. Her speech at United Nations headquarters attracted international attention and marked a significant evolution in her public identity—from movie star to influential advocate.
Much of her work in recent years has focused on gender equality, education, sustainability, and environmental issues. Her participation in the United for Wildlife forum reflects a longstanding interest in conservation and ethical responsibility.
Watson’s personal life has also generated considerable public curiosity, though she has consistently guarded her privacy. Over the years, she has been linked to entrepreneurs, academics, and business figures, but she rarely discusses relationships publicly. She has never married and does not have children.
One of her most widely discussed comments came when she described herself as “self-partnered,” a phrase she used to express contentment with being single and finding fulfillment independently rather than defining success through marriage. The statement sparked extensive debate but also resonated with many people who appreciated her perspective on modern relationships.
In recent years, Watson has also found herself connected to one of the biggest controversies surrounding the Harry Potter franchise. Following author J.K. Rowling’s remarks about transgender issues, Watson publicly voiced support for the transgender community. Her position was widely viewed as being at odds with Rowling’s views.

The disagreement contributed to reports of tension between former collaborators, although Watson has largely avoided direct confrontation. Instead, she has consistently emphasized respect, inclusion, and the importance of allowing individuals to live according to their own identities.
In 2022, she briefly returned to the screen for HBO Max’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts reunion special, reuniting with many of her former co-stars. The program offered fans a nostalgic look back at the franchise that launched her career and reminded audiences of her enduring place in popular culture.
At 36, Emma Watson appears to be pursuing a very different path from that of a conventional Hollywood celebrity. Rather than maintaining a constant presence on screen or promoting new projects year after year, she has chosen a quieter life focused on education, activism, and causes aligned with her personal values.
For that reason, every public appearance by Watson attracts significant attention. Not only because she remains one of the most beloved stars to emerge from the Harry Potter generation, but also because her journey represents a rare choice in the entertainment industry: stepping away from the spotlight at the height of fame in order to define success on her own terms.
