Elon Musk Says He Will Create a “Historically Accurate” AI Version of The Odyssey, Continuing His Criticism of Christopher Nolan’s Film

Elon Musk has once again found himself at the center of public attention after renewing his criticism of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Following several remarks about the film’s casting choices, the billionaire entrepreneur has now announced plans to create his own adaptation of Homer’s epic entirely with artificial intelligence, promising what he describes as a version that is “historically accurate” and faithful to Homer’s artistic vision.

In a post pinned to his X profile, Musk wrote: “Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.”

In another post, he further promoted the project by declaring, “Grok Imagine Odyssey will be 🔥🔥.” The statement quickly drew widespread attention, particularly as Grok Imagine is xAI’s latest AI-powered video generation tool, introduced as a major step forward in AI-driven creative content.

However, Musk’s promise of a “historically accurate” adaptation has also sparked debate. The Odyssey, one of the greatest works of ancient Greek literature, is filled with mythological elements, including the one-eyed Cyclops, the goddess Athena, Poseidon, and numerous other deities who actively shape Odysseus’ journey. As a result, many have questioned how such a mythology-rich story could realistically be presented under the label of “historically accurate.”

Beyond using AI, Musk has also suggested he would be open to producing a traditional film adaptation. After an X user proposed that Musk invest $100 million for Mel Gibson to direct a version of The Odyssey featuring painstakingly accurate ships, armor, and weapons, with dialogue taken directly from Homer’s original poem and spoken entirely in Homeric Greek, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO simply replied, “I’m down.” His response indicated a willingness to support such a project if it aligned with his vision.

These latest comments continue Musk’s ongoing criticism of Christopher Nolan’s adaptation. Previously, he amplified controversial social media posts criticizing the film’s casting, particularly those involving Lupita Nyong’o and Elliot Page. His actions drew widespread backlash, with critics accusing him of helping spread racist and transphobic rhetoric.

While Musk has remained vocal in his disapproval, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has enjoyed remarkable critical and audience success. The film currently holds a 94% critics’ score and a 97% verified audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the highest-rated films of Nolan’s career alongside acclaimed titles such as Memento, The Dark Knight, Inception, and Oppenheimer.

Nolan has also spoken publicly about the growing role of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. He believes younger audiences are quick to recognize and reject low-quality AI-generated content. The director remarked: “Their judgment of AI slop has been immediate and harsh. They see it for what it is very quickly… After years of driving towards heavily virtual environments, we’re seeing a renewed interest in more tactile, more real forms of storytelling.” According to Nolan, after years of increasingly digital filmmaking, audiences are gravitating back toward stories that feel tangible, authentic, and crafted by human hands.

The contrast between Musk and Nolan reflects two fundamentally different visions for the future of cinema. While Nolan continues to prioritize practical filmmaking, physical sets, and real-world effects, Musk believes artificial intelligence will soon be capable of producing feature-length films on an unprecedented scale.

Elon Musk has long been recognized as one of the most influential figures in the global technology industry. He leads or has founded several high-profile companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, and Neuralink. Over the years, he has consistently championed artificial intelligence as a transformative technology capable of reshaping both everyday life and the creative industries.

Since founding xAI, Musk has repeatedly stated that the company’s mission is to develop AI models capable of competing with the industry’s leading platforms. Grok, xAI’s flagship chatbot, has steadily expanded its capabilities, evolving from text generation to image creation and, more recently, AI-powered video production. His announcement regarding The Odyssey also serves as a showcase for Grok Imagine’s creative potential.

Despite his technological achievements, Musk remains one of the world’s most controversial public figures. His social media activity frequently sparks heated debate on issues ranging from politics and free speech to gender identity and race. Numerous posts shared by the billionaire have faced criticism for amplifying polarizing viewpoints and fueling online controversy.

Musk’s personal life has also attracted significant public attention. He has been married multiple times and has children with several partners. His marriage to author Justine Wilson ended in divorce, after which he entered an on-again, off-again relationship with actress Talulah Riley. He also had a widely publicized relationship with musician Grimes, with his family life often becoming a recurring subject of media coverage.

In recent years, Musk has devoted much of his attention to overseeing multiple technology companies simultaneously. Following his acquisition of Twitter and its rebranding as X, the platform has become his preferred venue for announcing new initiatives and engaging directly with users on topics ranging from politics and science to entertainment and filmmaking.

His outspoken criticism of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey further demonstrates his willingness to comment on industries beyond technology. Although he has no professional background in filmmaking, Musk regularly shares opinions on cinema, popular culture, and entertainment trends, ensuring that nearly every public statement generates widespread discussion.

At present, Musk has yet to reveal concrete production plans for his AI-generated version of The Odyssey, nor has he announced how such a project would ultimately be released. Nevertheless, by declaring that Grok Imagine will produce a full-length adaptation before the end of 2026, he has once again placed himself at the center of the ongoing debate over artificial intelligence’s role in the future of filmmaking.

As AI technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, Musk’s latest remarks are likely to intensify discussions between two opposing perspectives: one that views AI as the gateway to a new era of cinematic creation, and another that continues to value traditional filmmaking and the irreplaceable role of human creativity in storytelling.
