New information surrounding Doctor Strange 3 has captured the attention of Marvel fans, especially as it may unintentionally hint at a major plot twist in Avengers: Secret Wars. Although Marvel Studios has yet to confirm anything officially, the latest reports have sparked widespread speculation about Doctor Strange’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to insider Alex Perez during a recent Q&A session with The Cosmic Circus, Doctor Strange 3 is currently “on the backburner.” When asked about the film’s progress, Perez responded, “Marvel’s movie focus right now is on Black Panther 3, Shang-Chi 2, Spider-Man 5, the X-Men, Thunderbolts* sequel, Blade, Midnight Sons, and the next Avengers title.”
This suggests that Marvel Studios is prioritizing several other major projects before moving forward with the Sorcerer Supreme’s third standalone film. However, as with any insider report, the information should be treated with caution until Marvel Studios issues an official announcement.
Notably, Perez did not explain why Doctor Strange 3 has reportedly been pushed down Marvel’s production slate. One popular theory is that the decision is directly tied to the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. If true, revealing plans for Doctor Strange 3 too early could inadvertently spoil the character’s fate in the upcoming crossover film.

The theory stems from Marvel Comics’ Secret Wars storyline. In the comics, Doctor Strange becomes Sheriff Strange on Battleworld, serving as one of God-Emperor Doom’s most trusted enforcers. Eventually, however, Strange turns against Doom after realizing the consequences of his rule, sacrificing his own life in an attempt to save the surviving Marvel heroes.
If Marvel Studios chooses to closely adapt that storyline, Doctor Strange may not survive the events of Avengers: Secret Wars. Such an outcome could also explain why the studio is reportedly delaying development of his third solo film. Still, this remains nothing more than speculation, and Marvel has not confirmed any details regarding the character’s future.
Doctor Strange has become one of the MCU’s most significant heroes since making his debut in Doctor Strange (2016). Originally introduced as brilliant but arrogant neurosurgeon Stephen Strange, the character embarks on a life-changing journey into the mystic arts after a devastating car accident leaves his hands permanently damaged. His transformation into the Sorcerer Supreme quickly established him as one of the franchise’s central figures.
Following the success of his first solo movie, Doctor Strange appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. His mastery of magic and the multiverse has become a cornerstone of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga. From surrendering the Time Stone to Thanos to inadvertently opening the multiverse in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Strange’s decisions have repeatedly reshaped the MCU.

The character is portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, one of Britain’s most acclaimed actors. Before joining Marvel, Cumberbatch gained worldwide recognition for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock. He has also earned critical acclaim for performances in films such as The Imitation Game and The Power of the Dog, receiving nominations for the Academy Awards, BAFTAs, Emmys, and numerous other prestigious honors throughout his career.
Away from the spotlight, Cumberbatch has maintained a relatively private personal life. He married theatre director Sophie Hunter in 2015 after years of friendship, and the couple now share three children. Unlike many Hollywood stars, he has largely avoided major personal scandals, instead becoming known for his philanthropic work and outspoken support for humanitarian causes, including refugee rights and various social initiatives.
In previous interviews, Benedict Cumberbatch has repeatedly expressed his enthusiasm for continuing to play Doctor Strange, noting that the character still has enormous storytelling potential as Marvel continues exploring the multiverse. For that reason, reports that Doctor Strange 3 has been temporarily sidelined have raised fresh questions among fans about Marvel Studios’ long-term plans for one of its most important heroes.

now, Marvel Studios has not announced an official release date for Doctor Strange 3 or revealed any details about the project’s storyline. As a result, theories suggesting that Doctor Strange could die in Avengers: Secret Wars remain based solely on comic book source material and insider speculation. Nevertheless, if such a storyline ultimately unfolds on screen, it could become one of the MCU’s most dramatic turning points while also explaining why Marvel appears to be taking its time before moving ahead with Doctor Strange’s next solo adventure.
