Amazon Drops Sam Altman Biopic “Artificial” Starring Andrew Garfield as Film Searches for a New Home

Amazon has decided to step away from releasing Artificial, the upcoming biographical drama about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and starring Andrew Garfield in the role of the influential technology entrepreneur. The film, which is already in post-production, will no longer be distributed by Amazon, leaving the project searching for another studio to bring it to audiences.

A spokesperson for Amazon confirmed the decision, explaining that the company still holds great respect for Guadagnino and the filmmaking team but believes the movie would benefit from a different release strategy. “We have the utmost respect and admiration for Luca Guadagnino as an award-winning filmmaker — not to mention a longstanding relationship that we hope to continue,” the spokesperson said.

The statement continued: “We believe that Artificial will be better served if it were released by a different studio and are working closely with the filmmaking team to find the film a new home.”

The decision comes several months after OpenAI announced a strategic partnership with Amazon, a development that added another layer of attention around a film already focused on one of the most influential figures in the technology world. The partnership reportedly involved a major investment from Amazon into the artificial intelligence company, creating speculation about how the relationship could affect a film centered on OpenAI’s leadership.

Artificial was first announced as a major project from Luca Guadagnino, the Italian filmmaker known for visually distinctive and emotionally complex movies such as Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria, and Challengers. The director has built a reputation for exploring complicated personalities, human relationships, and characters facing moments of transformation.

For the film, Guadagnino reunited with Andrew Garfield, who previously worked with him on After the Hunt. Garfield takes on the role of Sam Altman, portraying the businessman and technology leader whose rise has become closely connected with the rapid development of artificial intelligence.

The film was expected to be positioned as one of the major releases of 2026, with an awards-season strategy originally planned for the fall. However, reports later suggested that the release could be delayed to 2027 due to competition with another technology-focused drama, The Social Reckoning, a fact-based film about another controversial figure in the tech industry.

The timing of Amazon’s departure has raised questions about the future of Artificial, especially given the increasing public attention surrounding artificial intelligence, OpenAI, and the individuals shaping the industry. While the studio is no longer releasing the movie, Amazon has emphasized that it remains committed to helping the filmmakers find another distributor.

Artificial features a notable ensemble cast, including Monica Barbaro, Yura Borisov, Cooper Koch, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Billie Lourd, Zosia Mamet, and Chris O’Dowd. The film also includes Ike Barinholtz portraying Elon Musk, another major figure in the technology world whose relationship with Altman and OpenAI has been widely discussed.

Barinholtz previously explained that he did not feel the need to meet Musk before taking on the role. “He’s famous enough that you get it,” the actor said, explaining that he prepared for the character by “poisoning my brain by watching lots of interviews with him.”

The actor also praised Guadagnino’s directing style, describing him as “a real genius” who “brings stuff out of people.” Barinholtz said any concerns he had before filming were quickly replaced by confidence because of the director’s creative approach.

Reports from early test screenings suggested that Artificial received positive reactions from audiences. However, sources also indicated that the film does not present Altman and Musk in an entirely flattering way, choosing instead to explore the complexity and controversy surrounding powerful figures in the technology industry.

At the center of the film is Sam Altman, one of the most recognizable names in the modern technology landscape. Before becoming associated with artificial intelligence, Altman built a reputation as an entrepreneur and investor. He became widely known through his leadership role at Y Combinator, one of the world’s most influential startup accelerators, where he helped support the growth of numerous technology companies.

Altman later became the CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, and played a central role in bringing artificial intelligence discussions into mainstream culture. Under his leadership, OpenAI grew from a research-focused organization into one of the most closely watched technology companies in the world.

His career has also been marked by controversy and intense public scrutiny. In 2023, Altman became the center of a major corporate crisis when OpenAI’s board temporarily removed him as CEO before he returned days later following significant internal and external pressure. The incident became one of the most dramatic leadership disputes in Silicon Valley in recent years.

Beyond business decisions, Altman has frequently been involved in conversations about the future risks and possibilities of artificial intelligence. Supporters view him as a visionary pushing technological progress, while critics have questioned the speed of AI development and the influence of a small number of technology leaders over a rapidly changing industry.

Despite the controversies surrounding his career, Altman has remained one of the most influential figures shaping discussions about the future of technology. His story has naturally attracted interest from filmmakers looking to explore ambition, innovation, power, and responsibility.

Andrew Garfield’s involvement adds another layer of attention to Artificial. Known for balancing major studio projects with more challenging dramatic roles, Garfield has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most respected actors. His performances in films such as The Social Network, Hacksaw Ridge, Tick, Tick… Boom!, and Spider-Man have demonstrated his range across different genres.

Garfield has often chosen characters dealing with complex emotional or personal journeys, making him a fitting choice to portray a figure like Altman, whose public image combines innovation, ambition, and controversy.

Luca Guadagnino’s interest in telling stories about complicated individuals also aligns with the subject matter of Artificial. Rather than simply presenting a traditional biography, the film is expected to explore the human side behind one of the most important figures in modern technology.

The project arrives during a period when Hollywood has shown increasing interest in stories about Silicon Valley leaders. Films about technology companies, social media, and artificial intelligence have become a growing genre, reflecting society’s fascination with the people responsible for shaping the digital world.

For Sam Altman, the release of a film inspired by his life represents another moment where his personal and professional journey becomes part of a larger cultural conversation. Whether Artificial ultimately becomes a major awards contender or finds a different path after Amazon’s exit, the story itself reflects the complicated relationship between technology, fame, and public perception.

As the filmmakers search for a new home for Artificial, the project remains one of the most closely watched biographical dramas in development. With a celebrated director, an acclaimed actor, and a subject who continues to influence global conversations, the film’s future release will likely attract significant attention.

The decision by Amazon does not mark the end of Artificial, but rather another unexpected chapter in the story of a film about one of the most controversial and influential figures of the modern era.
