Moises Caicedo Returns to Contention as Chelsea Prepare for Bournemouth Clash
Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo is ready to return against Bournemouth on Saturday after recovering from a calf injury, manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed. The Ecuador international has played just 14 minutes this season, while Marco Palestra could also make his competitive debut as Chelsea look to end a three-match winless run.
Chelsea have received a significant boost ahead of their Premier League meeting with Bournemouth, with Moises Caicedo declared fit to return following an extended spell on the sidelines. Head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed that the midfielder has recovered from his calf problem and is available for Saturday’s fixture.
Caicedo has managed only 14 minutes of football for Chelsea this season after first sustaining the injury during pre-season. The problem was aggravated when he made a substitute appearance against Brighton and Hove Albion on August 30, delaying his return to full fitness.
Alonso acknowledged the importance of having the midfielder back in contention, highlighting his quality, energy and influence on the team. Chelsea have missed his presence during a difficult period, and his availability could provide a timely lift as they attempt to improve their performances in the Premier League.
“Yes, he’s ready to go. We have used the time with Moises to get him back fit. He’s been training good,” Alonso said.

Alonso admits he took a risk with Caicedo
The Chelsea manager explained that the club had been cautious during Caicedo’s recovery, particularly after the midfielder’s previous setback. Alonso admitted that he had made the wrong decision by bringing the player back too soon against Brighton.
“We did not want to take risks for Brentford,” Alonso said, referring to Chelsea’s final match before the international break.
Reflecting on the Brighton appearance, he added: “We did that against Brighton, I did take a risk myself and I said, ‘Xabi you did it wrong’, but now he feels much better.”
The comments suggest Chelsea are determined to avoid another premature return that could aggravate the injury. Caicedo has now resumed training and, according to Alonso, is feeling significantly better.
His return comes at an important moment for Chelsea. The London club sit 10th in the Premier League after failing to win their last three matches. They have also conceded 12 goals, the highest total in the division at the time of the report, highlighting the defensive problems Alonso must address.
Caicedo’s midfield presence could help Chelsea regain greater control of matches, although his return alone will not resolve all the team’s difficulties.
Palestra could make his Chelsea debut
Chelsea could also welcome Marco Palestra back into the matchday picture. The summer signing has recovered from a quadriceps injury and is in line to make his first competitive appearance for the club against Bournemouth.
Alonso also expects João Pedro, Reece James and Cole Palmer to be available for selection. João Pedro has been dealing with a knee problem, James with a hamstring issue, while Palmer has had a minor muscular concern.
The prospect of having several players available again offers Chelsea greater options as they prepare for a demanding run of fixtures. Alonso pointed to the importance of keeping the squad fit, with five Premier League matches scheduled before the next international break.
“Now before the next international games, we have five Premier League games and hopefully they will be available as long,” he said. “But for tomorrow they will be good.”
Maintaining the fitness of key players will be crucial as Chelsea seek greater consistency. Their recent results have left them outside the top positions, while the number of goals conceded underlines the need for improvement.
Gittens ruled out for several weeks
There was also negative news for Alonso, with winger Jamie Gittens expected to miss several weeks because of an ankle injury. The problem was sustained while he was playing for England Under-21s against Kazakhstan.
Gittens’ absence reduces Chelsea’s attacking options at a time when the manager is hoping to make better use of his available squad. However, the returns of Caicedo and other first-team players should provide some encouragement ahead of the Bournemouth match.
Chelsea will now hope their returning players can help them halt their winless run and strengthen their position in the league. Caicedo’s fitness is a particularly welcome development, but the team will need to translate that boost into improved performances if they are to move beyond their inconsistent start to the campaign.
