MIA GOTH FILES FOR DIVORCE FROM SHIA LABEOUF: A DECADE OF BREAKUPS, RECONCILIATIONS AND A CUSTODY BATTLE

Mia Goth and Shia LaBeouf have officially entered a new chapter as the actress files for divorce, bringing an end to a relationship that lasted more than a decade and was marked by numerous breakups and reconciliations. The divorce petition was filed in Los Angeles on October 6, 2026, with Goth citing “irreconcilable differences” and listing July 28, 2025, as the date of separation. After years in which the public became accustomed to seeing the couple find their way back to each other, their relationship has now moved from celebrity speculation to a formal legal process.

The most significant detail in the filing is not the relatively common divorce grounds cited in the case, but Goth’s requests concerning the couple’s four-year-old daughter, Isabel. Goth is seeking primary physical and legal custody of their daughter, while also asking the court to terminate spousal support for both parties. Some reports indicate that she is still requesting visitation for LaBeouf, meaning that seeking primary custody does not necessarily mean cutting the actor out of his daughter’s life entirely. Even so, the request represents a significant step, as the arrangements outlined in the filing remain proposals and have not yet been approved by a court.

Goth’s request for primary custody also sets this divorce apart from the couple’s previous breakups. In the past, a separation between Mia Goth and Shia LaBeouf was never necessarily viewed as a definitive ending. They had separated, reunited and repeatedly forced the public to reconsider the status of their relationship. But once one partner files for divorce and submits specific requests concerning custody, the situation is no longer simply another celebrity relationship crisis. It becomes a legal process in which the interests of a four-year-old child will be of central importance.

Mia Goth and Shia LaBeouf first met in 2012 while working on Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac: Vol. II. At the time, Goth was beginning to attract attention through modeling and acting, while LaBeouf was already internationally known after rising to fame on Disney Channel and starring in the Transformers franchise. Their relationship quickly became a subject of public fascination, but from the beginning it also had the unpredictable quality that would define much of their time together. They broke up and reconciled several times, making the status of their relationship a recurring topic in entertainment media.

In 2016, Goth and LaBeouf held a wedding ceremony in Las Vegas with an Elvis Presley impersonator officiating. Almost immediately, however, questions arose over whether the ceremony was legally binding, with local officials indicating that the ceremony had not initially been registered as a legal marriage. LaBeouf nevertheless publicly confirmed that the two had married. The uncertainty surrounding the ceremony seemed to mirror the relationship itself: a romance that repeatedly existed somewhere between public and private, between seemingly definitive decisions and unexpected reunions. The couple were later confirmed to have legally married, and the current divorce filing identifies their marriage as beginning in October 2016.

By 2018, their relationship appeared to have reached a genuine ending when the couple split and LaBeouf began a relationship with singer FKA Twigs. Yet that period apart did not last forever. Around 2020, Goth and LaBeouf were seen together again, followed by reports that Goth was pregnant. In March 2022, they welcomed their daughter, Isabel. The arrival of a child marked a different stage in their relationship, as their decisions were no longer solely about the fate of a romantic partnership but also about the future of a family.

During the period when he and Goth reunited, LaBeouf once spoke about the importance of her presence in his life. The actor said that Goth had helped him through a difficult period, explaining that she “gave me hope when I was really running on fumes.” The remark reflected the role Goth had played for LaBeouf after some of the most turbulent periods of his personal life. That makes their eventual move toward divorce all the more complicated. Someone once described by LaBeouf as a source of hope during a difficult chapter is now the person seeking to formally end their marriage.

While Goth’s personal life has been complicated, her career has undergone a significant transformation in recent years. After appearing in a number of independent productions, the British actress became one of the most recognizable faces of modern horror through Ti West’s X, Pearl and MaXXXine. In X, Goth notably played both Maxine and Pearl, demonstrating a striking ability to transform between two very different characters. The success of the trilogy helped move Goth beyond an image largely associated with her private life and established her as one of the more distinctive young performers in contemporary horror.

Pearl became an especially important milestone in Goth’s career. For Pearl, she not only starred in the film but also co-wrote the screenplay with Ti West, demonstrating ambitions that extended beyond acting. MaXXXine brought her character back for the conclusion of the trilogy that had become closely associated with her name. Goth has since continued expanding her range with larger projects. More recently, she appeared in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey as Melantho and also joined the cast of Frankenstein, signaling a gradual move from being primarily identified with horror toward larger-scale Hollywood productions.

Goth’s career has not been entirely free of legal controversy, however. In 2024, background actor James Hunter filed a lawsuit connected to an incident on the set of MaXXXine. Hunter alleged that Goth assaulted him and kicked him in the head during filming. Goth, director Ti West and A24 were also named in the lawsuit. These remain allegations in a civil case and should not be treated as a finding that Goth committed wrongdoing. According to updates reported by the Los Angeles Times, the matter remains unresolved, with a trial expected in 2028.

If Goth’s career has been moving upward in recent years, LaBeouf’s professional journey has taken a far more complicated path. He became famous as a child through Disney Channel’s Even Stevens before breaking through with Holes. Films including Transformers, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Fury, Honey Boy and The Peanut Butter Falcon allowed LaBeouf to build a varied career spanning major commercial productions and deeply personal independent films. Yet alongside his professional achievements came a series of personal and legal controversies that repeatedly affected his public image.

One of the most serious controversies involving LaBeouf was the lawsuit brought by FKA Twigs. In 2020, the singer, whose real name is Tahliah Barnett, sued the actor, alleging that she had experienced physical, emotional and sexual abuse during their relationship. LaBeouf denied some of the allegations while also acknowledging that he had hurt people around him and needed to change. The lawsuit was later settled, but the dispute returned to public attention in 2026 over a confidentiality agreement. FKA Twigs ultimately announced that she was dismissing the new lawsuit after LaBeouf agreed to remove nondisclosure provisions connected to their previous settlement.

LaBeouf faced another legal issue in 2026 when he was arrested in New Orleans following a fight during Mardi Gras celebrations. The actor later pleaded guilty to three counts of simple battery and was sentenced to probation along with requirements related to treatment and anger management. This incident is separate from Goth’s divorce filing, and there is currently no evidence establishing that the arrest prompted Goth to seek a divorce. For that reason, placing the two events side by side in headlines can create an impression of causation that is not supported by the available information. Goth’s filing formally cites “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce.

Perhaps the most revealing detail in the case is the separation date listed in the filing: July 28, 2025. It indicates that the marriage had effectively ended long before Goth formally submitted the divorce petition. Rather than being an abrupt breakup immediately followed by legal action, the couple appear to have been separated for more than a year before the matter reached court. Reports that they had been apart had already circulated earlier in 2026, but the legal proceedings had not yet been made public. Goth’s decision to file in October 2026 therefore appears to formalize a separation that had already taken place in practice.

For Goth, the divorce comes at a moment when she is also entering a new phase professionally. Once known largely for independent films and an enigmatic public image, she has increasingly become part of major Hollywood productions. She has spoken about motherhood as a particularly meaningful experience, and the presence of Isabel means that decisions surrounding the marriage can no longer be viewed solely through the lens of two adults. Goth’s custody request will be one of the matters for the court to consider, alongside LaBeouf’s visitation rights and the specific arrangements that may ultimately be made for Isabel.

For LaBeouf, meanwhile, the coming period could represent another major turning point. After years of appearing in headlines surrounding personal controversies, the actor continues to pursue his career while dealing with the long-term consequences of legal and personal struggles. The resolution of the latest dispute involving FKA Twigs and Goth’s decision to formally file for divorce have placed two significant relationships from his personal life back in the spotlight within the same period. However, each case has its own circumstances and should not be treated as one connected narrative.

After more than a decade of dating, breaking up, reconciling, marrying and becoming parents, Mia Goth and Shia LaBeouf now face a question very different from those that defined their relationship in the past: how to end their marriage while continuing to share responsibility for their daughter. The divorce filing is only the beginning of the legal process, and there has been no final ruling on custody of Isabel. What happens next will depend on LaBeouf’s response, the court’s decisions and any agreements the two may reach. After years of leaving the public wondering whether they would find their way back to each other once again, their story now appears to have entered a different stage — one in which the focus is no longer on an unexpected reconciliation, but on how they will bring an end to a relationship that lasted more than a decade.
