Maresca Sticks to Manchester City Owners’ Line Amid Financial Rules Storm

Enzo Maresca has maintained his public support for Manchester City’s leadership after an independent commission found the club guilty of the vast majority of more than 100 alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules. With mounting scrutiny and a potentially hostile reception awaiting at Liverpool, the City manager has shown little willingness to break ranks with the club’s hierarchy.

Maresca delivers a carefully controlled response

Maresca’s first major public appearance since the commission’s findings was closely watched. His press conference on Friday attracted around 45 attendees, approximately three times the usual number, as journalists sought answers about the controversy engulfing the club.

Asked whether he understood the anger directed at City, the Italian replied that an ongoing process remained in progress and that he completely trusted the club. His initial wording, particularly the qualification “in this moment”, immediately raised questions about whether his confidence might change.

Maresca quickly corrected himself when challenged, insisting that he trusted the club not only in the present but also in the future. Nevertheless, the initial hesitation provided a glimpse of the difficult position facing the manager as the financial case continues to dominate the headlines.

A united front with the club’s leadership

Throughout the briefing, Maresca consistently backed the organisation led by chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano. He said his decision to join City had been based on complete trust in the ownership, chief executive, sporting director and wider organisation.

The club’s media team also appeared determined to keep the discussion under control. When Maresca was asked whether senior executives should have faced the media themselves rather than leaving him to answer questions, an intervention redirected attention towards the upcoming match against Liverpool.

The episode reinforced the impression that City wanted to present a united front while avoiding a prolonged public debate about the commission’s conclusions.

Financial verdict intensifies pressure on City

The independent commission found Manchester City guilty of the vast majority of more than 100 charges relating to alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations. The league’s subsequent statement repeatedly used the word “sham” to describe the conduct at the centre of the case, prompting widespread criticism and ridicule online.

Soriano has responded forcefully, describing the commission’s position as supporting what he called the Premier League’s “conspiracy theory”. His remarks reflected the club’s continued resistance to the allegations and its disagreement with the conclusions reached.

Maresca, however, declined to expand on the dispute. Instead, he repeated his confidence in the people running the club, leaving the responsibility for addressing the legal and financial questions with the hierarchy.

Haaland fit for Liverpool showdown

Amid the controversy, Maresca was also asked about Erling Haaland’s condition after the striker had requested to be substituted during Norway’s most recent international fixture.

The manager offered a reassuring update, explaining that Haaland had spent two or three days in Marbella, played golf, recovered and prepared for the trip to Anfield. The answer briefly returned the press conference to ordinary football matters after an extended focus on the club’s off-field problems.

City head into Sunday’s fixture in strong form, having collected the maximum 15 points from their opening five league matches. They also won at Anfield last season, with Haaland scoring a late penalty.

Anfield presents a different kind of challenge

Maresca acknowledged that the atmosphere at Liverpool’s home ground could be even more hostile because of the controversy surrounding City. He insisted, however, that his players must concentrate on the match and try to secure another victory.

The manager said the team remained in a positive mood, pointing to its position at the top of the table as a reason for confidence. He also welcomed the prospect of a major fixture, arguing that such matches were among the reasons he had chosen to become a manager.

Yet the questions surrounding City are unlikely to disappear with the final whistle. As the club continues to contest the implications of the financial case, Maresca’s unwavering public support for its leadership demonstrates how firmly the manager is aligned with the organisation he represents — at least for now.
