Leeds United Ready to Prove a Point Against Arsenal After Last Season’s Emirates Humiliation

James Justin and Lukas Nmecha have admitted Leeds United were outclassed during last season’s visit to Arsenal, but believe Daniel Farke’s side have developed significantly since then. Leeds head to the Emirates on Saturday hoping to extend their unbeaten run and demonstrate how much they have improved.

Leeds United are preparing for Saturday’s trip to Arsenal with a clear determination to show they are a different team from the side that suffered a heavy defeat in north London last season. Defender James Justin and forward Lukas Nmecha have spoken candidly about the experience, acknowledging that Leeds struggled to cope with Arsenal’s quality and insisting they are ready to approach the rematch differently.

Daniel Farke’s squad returned to training at Thorp Arch during the week after the international break, with the final players returning from national-team duty. Leeds had built encouraging momentum before the pause, remaining unbeaten across their recent run of matches and establishing themselves as one of the Premier League’s difficult teams to beat.

Victories over Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, combined with draws against Brentford, Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace, have lifted Leeds to fifth in the table. They sit three points behind second-placed Arsenal and have conceded only three goals, giving them a joint-best defensive record in the division.

Justin: Leeds have come a long way

Last season’s encounters with Arsenal were a stark contrast to Leeds’ recent defensive resilience. Their trip to the Emirates ended in a 5-0 defeat, exposing the difficulties they faced against one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacking sides.

Arsenal were among the division’s highest-scoring teams last season, with only Manchester City scoring more. Nevertheless, Justin believes Leeds have developed enough to provide a stronger challenge this time around.

“We’ve come on a lot from last season, and last season’s games against them were not good by any stretch of the imagination,” Justin said, acknowledging the scale of the previous disappointment.

The defender stressed that Leeds were not attempting to avoid the reality of their earlier performances. Instead, the team intends to use the experience as motivation while adapting its approach against a formidable opponent.

“This year we’ll come with some different ideas to face what is one of the best sides, if not the best side in the league this season,” he added.

Justin also made clear that Leeds want more than simply to compete. The team hopes to maintain its unbeaten streak and establish itself as a serious force in the Premier League following its encouraging start to the campaign.

Nmecha admits Leeds were naive

Nmecha offered an equally frank assessment of the previous visit to the Emirates. Leeds had entered that early-season fixture with confidence after beating Everton at Elland Road, but their optimism quickly gave way to a difficult afternoon.

The forward explained that Leeds had not yet completed their summer recruitment, meaning the team was still adjusting to its new personnel. However, he also acknowledged that the players underestimated the challenge posed by Arsenal.

“We got battered, to be honest,” Nmecha said. “We were just a little bit naive in terms of how good they were going to be. We pressed constantly and they just picked us apart.”

His comments underline the tactical problems Leeds encountered against Arsenal’s ability to exploit pressing teams and find space. The experience served as a reminder of the level required to compete against the Premier League’s leading sides.

Nmecha scored six goals as Leeds went on to finish 14th last season. He believes the team subsequently demonstrated its ability to perform against major opponents, giving him confidence that Saturday’s contest could be different.

Leeds aim to continue their unbeaten run

Despite recognising Arsenal’s quality, Nmecha is approaching the match with ambition rather than resignation. He believes Leeds have improved since last season and should have a better chance of producing a positive result.

“I definitely think that as last season went on, we did really well against the other big teams and I think we’re a different team now than we were then,” he said.

The forward acknowledged that Leeds would welcome a point from a difficult away fixture, but insisted the team would still aim to win. Their recent form provides a reason for optimism, particularly given their defensive organisation and ability to collect results against strong opposition.

Arsenal remain a formidable test, and Leeds will need to show that their recent resilience can withstand the pressure of playing at the Emirates. For Justin, Nmecha and their team-mates, however, Saturday offers an opportunity to turn the painful memories of last season into evidence of genuine progress.

Leeds arrive in London unbeaten and fifth in the table. They know the challenge will be considerable, but their message is clear: they are no longer the same side that Arsenal dismantled 5-0.
