Aston Villa: Unai Emery faces mounting problems ahead of Arsenal clash

Threadbare squad exposed in Brighton defeat

Aston Villa's preparations for their first home game of the Premier League season have been thrown into further doubt after a 4-0 defeat to Brighton exposed the scale of the problems facing Unai Emery. Villa's opening-day collapse at the Amex included an own goal, four conceded before half-time and a red card for new signing Joao Gomes.

The result was particularly concerning given the changes to Emery's squad during the summer. Four starters from the side that won the Europa League final in May have departed, leaving significant gaps in defence, midfield and attack. Villa's squad retention rate is reportedly the lowest in the Premier League, highlighting the extent of the rebuild Emery is being forced to oversee.

The situation could become even more difficult before Villa welcome Arsenal to Villa Park on Monday Night Football. Ollie Watkins' future remains uncertain amid interest from Al Hilal, while goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is also pursuing an exit. Watkins was absent from the squad for the Brighton defeat, leaving Villa without a recognised striker.

Villa desperately need a striker

The lack of attacking options was painfully obvious against Brighton. Emery was forced to use Emi Buendia as a false nine, with Villa registering just two touches in the opposition box before Gomes' dismissal and five in total during the match.

The situation is even more problematic with teenage striker Brian Madjo injured, while Tammy Abraham was also unavailable against Brighton. With Watkins' future increasingly uncertain, Villa are expected to explore their long-standing interest in Nicolas Jackson, who previously worked with Emery at Villarreal.

Villa cannot afford to enter the Arsenal game without a genuine focal point in attack. The champions will pose a far greater threat than Brighton, meaning Emery needs reinforcements quickly if his side are to avoid another difficult afternoon.

Joao Gomes adds another midfield headache

Gomes' Premier League debut was another major setback. The Brazilian midfielder was expected to help fill the void left by Youri Tielemans, but he was sent off in the first half after being booked twice.

Gomes will now miss Villa's next three matches, including the visit of Arsenal. Emery must therefore consider Ross Barkley, John McGinn, Lamare Bogarde or potentially Victor Lindelof as midfield options. Villa are also finalising a deal for free agent Leon Goretzka, although it remains unclear whether the experienced midfielder could be ready to start against Arsenal.

Defensive problems exposed

Perhaps more worrying for Emery was Villa's performance without Ezri Konsa, who has moved to Arsenal for £55m. Brighton repeatedly exposed defensive weaknesses, with Pau Torres' wayward back-pass contributing to the opening goal and further errors allowing the hosts to exploit gaps in the Villa defence.

Brighton produced an open-play expected-goals figure of 3.54, the highest Emery has faced since taking charge of Villa in October 2022. Three of Brighton's 21 shots came directly from Villa errors, with two of those leading to goals.

Villa are attempting to strengthen defensively, with a bid for Southampton's Taylor Harwood-Bellis rejected and contact reportedly made for Club Brugge defender Joel Ordóñez. But until reinforcements arrive, Emery must find a way to stop the individual mistakes that proved so costly against Brighton.

Arsenal test comes at a difficult time

Emery has recovered from poor starts before, but the scale of Villa's current problems makes this one of his biggest challenges yet. Key players have departed, replacements are injured or unavailable, and Gomes' suspension further reduces his options.

With Arsenal next, Villa have little time to recover. The meeting at Villa Park will provide an immediate test of whether Emery can stabilise a squad that currently looks short of depth and confidence.
