ANDREW GARFIELD LEAVES THE DOOR OPEN FOR A SPIDER-MAN RETURN

Andrew Garfield has once again caught Spider-Man fans’ attention after being asked about the possibility of putting on the web-slinger’s suit again for a future project. In a new interview with Metro Entertainment, the 43-year-old actor was asked what it would take for him to return as Peter Parker and whether another appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe could actually happen. Garfield’s answer was not a confirmation, but it was enough to leave open a door he has never completely closed. “Never say never. I mean, yeah, sure,” he said. “There’s so much possibility, I guess. So, if it’s deemed a worthy story then, yeah, I’d be very curious to have a chat.“

The way Andrew Garfield chose his words this time is similar to the attitude he has maintained for years whenever Spider-Man comes up. The actor did not say that he is attached to a new project, nor did he confirm that Marvel Studios has made him an offer. What he emphasized was that a story compelling enough could make him interested. In another interview concerning the possibility of returning, Garfield also reflected on the unique experience of working alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire, showing that he understands the expectations surrounding the character while remaining unwilling to turn his comments into a promise about the future.

The last time Garfield played Spider-Man was in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the 2021 MCU film that brought three generations of the web-slinger together on the same screen. Alongside Tom Holland’s MCU version of Peter Parker, Garfield returned as the Peter Parker he had previously played in The Amazing Spider-Man, while Tobey Maguire represented the first major cinematic Spider-Man of the modern era. Garfield’s appearance was kept secret for a long time and ultimately became one of the film’s biggest surprises. No Way Home went on to receive numerous nominations and awards, while the reunion of the three Spider-Men became one of the elements audiences remembered most strongly.

Before becoming part of the multiverse storyline, however, Garfield had already experienced a complicated journey with the role of Peter Parker. He played the character in The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014. The two films placed Garfield at the center of a major superhero franchise while pairing him with Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. On screen, Peter and Gwen shared a romance filled with both tenderness and tragedy, while the chemistry between the two actors in real life also developed into a relationship that attracted considerable public attention.

Garfield and Stone began dating after working together on The Amazing Spider-Man. Their relationship lasted around four years before ending in 2015. Both actors were generally private about their personal lives, but public interest in the couple grew rapidly because they were not only co-stars but also portrayed one of the most recognizable romantic couples in comic-book history. After their breakup, the two were widely believed to have remained on good terms. In the years that followed, Garfield was repeatedly asked about Stone, but he generally avoided turning their private relationship into a media storyline.

Andrew Garfield’s career, however, has never been defined solely by Spider-Man. Before taking on the role of Peter Parker, he had already attracted attention for Boy A and, particularly, David Fincher’s The Social Network, in which he portrayed Eduardo Saverin. The performance brought Garfield significant critical attention and important award nominations. He continued to choose projects across a wide range of genres, moving between dramatic films, independent productions and larger commercial projects. That progression gradually allowed Garfield to move beyond the image of an actor known primarily for a major superhero franchise.

After The Amazing Spider-Man, Garfield entered a particularly notable period of his career, taking on a series of emotionally demanding roles. In Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, he portrayed Desmond Doss, an army medic who refused to carry a weapon during World War II but still went onto the battlefield to save his fellow soldiers. The performance earned Garfield an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In 2021, he received another Oscar nomination for Tick, Tick... Boom!, a film about composer Jonathan Larson. Those performances further established Garfield as an actor capable of building a career independent of the commercial power of superhero movies.

Tick, Tick... Boom! also revealed another side of Garfield’s abilities. He was not only required to portray the inner struggles of an artist facing difficult choices, but also to perform the musical material himself. The film received strong critical attention and allowed Garfield to broaden his professional range even further. On stage, he had already achieved considerable success, winning a Tony Award for his performance in Angels in America. His ability to move between mainstream cinema, independent films, dramatic roles and theater has therefore become an important part of his reputation, placing him well beyond the image of a conventional superhero star.

Yet Spider-Man remains a particularly influential role in Garfield’s career. When The Amazing Spider-Man was released in 2012, he inherited a character already strongly associated with Tobey Maguire. Garfield was expected to bring audiences a younger, more emotionally accessible Peter Parker while giving the character an identity distinct from the previous version. His pairing with Emma Stone also became a major part of the film’s appeal. Garfield and Stone received recognition for their on-screen chemistry, while their portrayal of Peter and Gwen became one of the most memorable relationships in the history of Spider-Man films.

For many fans, the most disappointing part of Garfield’s Spider-Man story was how quickly it came to an end. Following The Amazing Spider-Man 2, plans for the character and the franchise changed considerably. Garfield left the role before a third installment could be made, and Spider-Man was subsequently introduced into the MCU with Tom Holland taking over as Peter Parker. For years, audiences continued to debate whether Garfield deserved another opportunity. That lingering sense of unfinished business made his return in No Way Home more meaningful than a simple cameo, allowing the actor and his version of the character to revisit a chapter that had ended earlier than many fans expected.

In No Way Home, Garfield’s Peter Parker was given the opportunity to confront one of the greatest losses suffered by his version of the character. His Peter had witnessed Gwen Stacy’s death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, an event that left him carrying a deep sense of guilt. When he encountered Tom Holland’s younger Peter, Garfield’s version was able to prevent him from repeating some of the mistakes he himself had made. The storyline therefore carried a sense of healing for the character, while also giving audiences some of the emotional closure they felt Garfield’s version had previously lacked. His return also helped change the way many viewers looked back at his portrayal of Spider-Man.

Since No Way Home, Garfield has repeatedly been asked about the possibility of returning. He has previously said that he was not aware of any specific project being developed for him, while also refusing to completely rule out the possibility of playing Spider-Man again. His latest interview once again reflects that position. “Never say never” is not a confirmation that another movie is coming, but in Garfield’s case, it is enough to keep the possibility alive because his version of Spider-Man continues to occupy a distinct place in the hearts of fans.
