WAYNE ROONEY’S GLOW-UP GOES BEYOND A NEW NOSE

Wayne Rooney has made headlines with his latest transformation, appearing alongside his wife, Coleen Rooney, at the London premiere of The Real Rooneys. At 40, the former England captain looked noticeably slimmer, with longer hair, a clean-shaven face and a fresher complexion. Dressed in a sharp navy suit, his new appearance recalled his younger Manchester United years, although this time the look was considerably more polished.

The attention surrounding Rooney’s appearance actually began before the premiere. Fans first noticed the changes while he was working as a BBC pundit during the World Cup. During England’s 2-1 victory over DR Congo, viewers commented on his slimmer figure, fuller hair and healthier-looking appearance. What initially seemed like a subtle change soon became impossible to miss, with social media users praising how different the former footballer looked.

According to reports, Rooney’s transformation has involved much more than a new haircut or a carefully chosen suit. He has reportedly reduced his alcohol intake, adjusted his diet to focus on a balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats, and begun paying greater attention to his appearance. Since becoming a regular television pundit, he has also worked with a stylist to develop a wardrobe better suited to his new professional environment. The changes reflect not only an effort to look different, but also Rooney’s gradual adaptation to life away from professional football.

One of the most noticeable changes has been Rooney’s hair. The former striker has openly discussed his struggles with hair loss and previously confirmed that he underwent two hair transplants, reportedly costing around £30,000. Rather than pretending the transformation was the result of a miracle product or a sudden lifestyle revelation, Rooney has been unusually candid about the procedures. His changing hairline has therefore become one of the most documented aspects of his appearance since leaving professional football.

His latest transformation also includes his nose. Rooney recently underwent nose surgery after suffering two fractures during his playing career. By the time he appeared at the premiere of The Real Rooneys, he had fully recovered from the procedure. Standing beside Coleen in a navy suit, he looked markedly different from his appearance at the premiere of Coleen’s earlier Disney+ programme, The Real Wagatha Story, where he had shorter hair and a fuller beard.

But perhaps the most significant change has little to do with cosmetic procedures and much more to do with Rooney’s relationship with alcohol. Throughout his career, he has spoken openly about periods when drinking became difficult to control. In a conversation with Rio Ferdinand, Rooney said he believed Coleen had played a crucial role in helping him through those struggles. “I honestly believe if she weren’t there I’d be dead,” he said. He also acknowledged that he had been “struggling massively” with alcohol and that there were periods when he did not know who to turn to.

Rooney has previously described how he would sometimes drink for two days before returning to Manchester United training. He recalled using eye drops, chewing gum and other methods to conceal the signs of drinking when he arrived at the training ground. “I just drank for two days straight. Come training and at the weekend I’d score two goals and then I’d go back and go and drink for two days straight again,” Rooney said. Behind the image of the fearless young striker was someone who was struggling to deal with the enormous pressure surrounding his career.

In a more recent interview, Rooney reflected further on that period and explained that the pressure of professional football had contributed to his drinking. During his years at Manchester United and with England, he said he did not feel comfortable telling Sir Alex Ferguson, the club or even Coleen when he was struggling. Instead, he kept his feelings to himself and turned to alcohol. “Back then, you wouldn’t open up. I wouldn’t go to Alex Ferguson, I wouldn’t go to the club. So I’d hold it all in and go home and drink,” Rooney said. He now believes that being more open with Coleen has helped him deal with difficult periods in a healthier way.

His relationship with alcohol has also been closely connected to his marriage. Rooney and Coleen met as teenagers and married in 2008. Over the years, their relationship has been followed closely by the British media and has survived a number of difficult periods, including Rooney’s public admissions of infidelity. The couple have spoken about the mistakes they made and the ways they attempted to deal with them as a family.

Rooney has acknowledged that alcohol played a role in some of his poor decisions, while Coleen has spoken about the importance of confronting their problems rather than ignoring them. “I know people say, ‘are they just staying together to keep the family unit together?’ That was part of it, but also we still love each other,” Coleen once said. Nearly two decades after they first began their relationship, the couple remain together and now share four sons: Kai, Klay, Kit and Cass.

Their family life is now at the heart of The Real Rooneys, a 10-part Disney+ series that gives viewers a look at the family away from the football pitch. The series arrives at an important point in Wayne’s life, as he moves further away from football management and spends more time with his children, while Coleen continues to develop her own career and commercial opportunities. Their decision to allow cameras into their home also represents another step in the transformation of the Rooney family from a football household into a major part of the British celebrity landscape.

Of course, Rooney’s story cannot be separated from his extraordinary football career. He emerged from Everton as a teenage prodigy before joining Manchester United in 2004. During his time at Old Trafford, he became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, scoring 253 goals and winning 16 major trophies. His partnership with players including Cristiano Ronaldo helped define one of Manchester United’s most successful periods, while Rooney himself became one of the most recognizable English footballers of his generation.

His international career was equally significant. Rooney won 120 caps for England and scored 53 goals for the national team. He became England’s youngest goalscorer at the age of 17 years and 317 days and enjoyed a memorable Euro 2004 campaign at just 18. Although Harry Kane later surpassed Rooney’s England scoring record, Rooney remains one of the most important players in the history of the national team and one of the defining football figures of his era.

After retiring from playing in 2021, Rooney attempted to establish himself in management. He began at Derby County, later worked in MLS with DC United and subsequently managed Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle. The transition from elite footballer to manager proved far more complicated than his playing career, and his departure from Plymouth marked another turning point. Rather than remaining permanently tied to the dugout, Rooney has increasingly explored television and entertainment as the next stage of his professional life.

Television has therefore become an increasingly important part of Rooney’s post-football identity. His work as a BBC pundit and appearances on Match of the Day have introduced him to audiences in a different role. Unlike footballers, who can disappear into the background between matches, television personalities are constantly visible. Clothes, hair, weight, communication style and general presentation all become part of the public image.

That may explain why Rooney’s latest transformation has attracted so much attention. His new appearance comes at exactly the moment when he is rebuilding his identity outside football. The longer hair, clean-shaven face, slimmer figure and recent nose surgery are all visible changes, but they form part of a much broader transition. At 40, Rooney is no longer preparing for another Premier League weekend. He is navigating television, family life, his experiences in football management and whatever comes next.

There are also reports that Rooney could take his television career even further by appearing on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! Coleen reached the final of the reality show in 2024, and Rooney is reportedly interested in experiencing the programme for himself. ITV has not officially confirmed his participation, so the reports remain speculation at this stage. If he does enter the jungle, however, it would represent another dramatic departure from the football environment that defined most of his adult life.

The prospect is also interesting because Coleen has already experienced the programme herself. Rooney’s competitive nature is well documented after years at Everton, Manchester United and England, although football ability offers little protection against insects, unusual food and the psychological demands of reality television. Whether or not the appearance happens, his interest in the format illustrates how far his career has moved beyond the traditional world of football.

For now, Rooney and Coleen are focused on The Real Rooneys, which offers audiences a closer look at their family life. The series arrives at a moment when Wayne is clearly trying to redefine what his public identity looks like. His new appearance may be the most visible part of that process, but the larger story is about a former footballer learning how to live and work differently after spending much of his life at the center of the sport.

From an Everton teenager who became a global football star to the captain of England, from Manchester United’s record goalscorer to a manager, television pundit and reality-show possibility, Rooney has already lived several professional lives. Along the way, his struggles with alcohol, the scrutiny surrounding his marriage and the intense expectations placed upon him have all shaped the public image that followed him beyond the pitch.

His current transformation, then, is about more than a nose operation, a new haircut or a better wardrobe. Rooney has spoken openly about his mistakes, his relationship with alcohol, the importance of Coleen and the pressure he once kept to himself. “Now if I feel a bit down I’ll say to Coleen, ‘I feel shit,’” he said recently. For someone who spent much of his youth being expected to perform under enormous pressure, learning to speak openly about how he feels may be one of the most significant changes of all.

The Wayne Rooney appearing today is therefore not simply a former footballer with a new look. He is a husband, father, television personality and former manager trying to build a life beyond the role that made him famous. The suit, the hair, the weight loss and the new nose may be the details that catch the eye first, but behind them lies a much broader transition. At 40, Rooney is entering a new chapter, one in which his greatest challenge may no longer be what he can do on a football pitch, but how he wants to be remembered once he has finally stepped away from it.
