Champions Make Strong Statement in Season Opener Despite Injury Concern
Defending champions SunRisers Leeds made an emphatic start to the 2026 edition of The Hundred Women with a convincing seven-wicket victory over MI London at The Kia Oval. Playing under their new identity after major overseas investment, the former Northern Superchargers looked every bit as dominant as the side that lifted the trophy last season, comfortably chasing down 108 with 31 balls remaining.
However, the impressive performance was overshadowed by a worrying shoulder injury to experienced England seamer Kate Cross, who was forced off the field after landing awkwardly while fielding. Cross had earlier produced one of the highlights of the match with a brilliant running catch to dismiss former England teammate Danni Wyatt-Hodge. Initial assessments suggest she avoided a dislocation, but scans will determine the full extent of the injury.

SunRisers Bowlers Take Control
After MI London raced to 57 without loss thanks to an aggressive opening partnership between Hayley Matthews (33) and Danni Wyatt-Hodge (29), SunRisers' bowling attack quickly turned the tide. The defending champions tightened the scoring and claimed wickets at regular intervals to restrict MI London to 107-8 from 100 balls.
Captain Dani Gibson, who became the most expensive English player in this year's Hundred auction, led by example with figures of 2-17, while Deepti Sharma also picked up two wickets. Young leg-spinner Hannah Baker impressed with 2-16, helping dismantle MI London's middle order.
Litchfield Leads Comfortable Chase
Australia's Phoebe Litchfield once again demonstrated why she is considered one of the brightest talents in women's cricket. Although she was involved in an unfortunate run-out that ended Jess Jonassen's innings, Litchfield responded in style, smashing 43 from just 26 deliveries to put SunRisers firmly in control of the chase.
She received excellent support from fellow Australian Annabel Sutherland, who remained unbeaten on 30, before captain Gibson sealed victory with the winning boundary. The chase was completed with remarkable ease, highlighting the champions' depth and confidence heading into the new campaign.
Broad Full of Praise for Litchfield

Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad was full of admiration for Litchfield's performance, describing the Australian opener as one of the finest batters in the world.
Broad praised her complete range of shots, calmness at the crease, and ability to score all around the wicket, suggesting her batting has reached an elite level capable of dominating any bowling attack.
Perfect Start, But Fitness Watch Continues
SunRisers Leeds could hardly have asked for a better opening result as they began the defence of their title with an authoritative victory. Their balanced bowling attack and explosive batting underline why they remain one of the favourites to win the competition again.
The only concern is the fitness of Kate Cross. With scans scheduled on her injured shoulder, the defending champions will be hoping the experienced pace bowler can return quickly as they look to build momentum in the weeks ahead.
